Well, I was six when he played his last season with the Expos, so I don't remember him at all. It's great that he got to finish his career with the team he started with, and a shame he died so young.
 
I lol'ed when I read this on MLB.com in an article about the rumored Abreu/Burnett trade.
But the Angels were one of the teams on Burnett's no-trade list, and reports out of New York said the enigmatic right-hander declined to move west because his wife is afraid of flying.

I'm not knocking him. He doesn't throw with the heat all the way up because he wants to prolong his career. The fact is, since his delivery is so unique you don't really know what kind of effect it would have on career longevity. That said, his mechanics when finishing are pretty sound.

As far as Zambrano goes, ugh god I hate the guy. He's a fat angry baby. Hopefully now that he's in Miami he can chill out a little bit and not be such a punk. I'm not really fond of the Cubs. :lol:

Lincecum's mechanics are better than most people realize. Sure, he's a leaner, but he really throws from his toes. A delivery like that of Ubaldo's Jimenez is much more conducive to injury.

It's hard to find a decent picture, but if you ever watch him pitch, he jams he arm back and practically hyperextends his elbow every time:

Jerky motions like that worry me much more than Timmy doing his mega stride.

And the next 5 years he could possibly not have the contract. Look at A-Rod now. He is a shadow of what he once was, do you think he would get a huge contract with the way he plays now? No, he would get a contract just not another 5 years. Pujols was offered more guaranteed years, that's the big ticket items in contracts. Years.

Yeah Ubaldo has fugly mechanics.
 
Word has it that Ryan Braun has been vindicated- he won his appeal over the banned substance deal he's been involved in and accused of, and his 50-game suspension has been reversed. This story may be very far from over. However for now, Ryan Braun won his appeal. What are your thoughts on this?

From what I've read, he got off on a technicality. I would like to think he plays clean, but without being in the locker room day in and day out, who knows?

Its not a technicality, its bad evidence. The test was extraordinarily flawed. It showed that he has testosterone levels beyond what is possible. I think it was somewhere around double the highest ever recorded. There is literally no way he could get them that high. Not exactly a technicality.

Where did you hear that? All I've seen says that it was because the test wasn't immediately sent to Fed-Ex.

Source that. Everything I've heard/read tells me the opposite of what you posted. But then again, you are the perennial steroid defender/excuser. ;)

Thing is, he's very small. When I first started hearing of him hitting so many balls out of the park his size was the first thing that stood out to me. "Really?", is what came to mind.


Hopefully it's not true, but with the attention he's received I seriously doubt he would continue to juice if he had in fact been doing so. We'll see what happens with his production over the next couple of years. I haven't seen a guy that small hit so many out since Brady Anderson, who was a juicer.

Are you serious? He's like 6'1 210... Have you seen Tim Lincecum light up a radar gun? Do you remember what Barry Bonds and Ken Griffey Jr. looked like when they were young players dropping bombs? Being bigger is not always what it takes to hit it farther.

By the way - Joey Bats is listed at 6'0 195.
 
It's kind of scary to me now that so many of the Marlins are right around my age or younger. We've got these new kids coming up, and they're only like 17. Wtf.

I know, but I'm honestly surprised by those numbers. I'm just saying that at the plate he doesn't look to me like a power hitter.

I admit "twice" is a bit of a stretch, but SI (I think) pointed out that his testosterone levels likely would of been a MLB record. Who knows what it means. I honestly don't care anymore.. MLB is about 2 and half decades late with dealing with this issue. At this point it seems to be part of it game. Can't wait till the day Selig is gone. I wouldn't be shocked if Selig took an extra step to 'save' a player on his team.

I'm a truth defender. Something that is lacked amongst MLB fans. Its funny though that pretty much every argument I've made concerning steroids, no one has contradicted any of them or posted any proof that I'm wrong on this subject. I don't get into the "who did it and who didn't do it" I'm more interested in the "did they do it when it was legal or did they do it when it was illegal".

He does play in a small park, though 6'1 isn't exactly tiny. Look at what Hack Wilson did and he was only 5'6. Though pitchers weren't as good then as they are now, still incredible.

Size is only what you make it, Andres Torres isn't very big but he can hit the ball as far as anyone.


EDIT: Something funny to note... ESPN had a poll asking if Jason Varitek is a HoFer.. :lol: I don't think I've laughed so freakin' hard!
 
HOF ain't what it used to be, imo.
 
It will depend on what the writers think of him. To his credit, he was on two WS winning teams, had three All-Star Appearances, and won a gold glove and a silver slugger award. If you are a SABR guy though, he doesn't have a lot going on.

It just keeps getting worse and worse for A.J. Burnett. First he is traded to the Pirates, and then he smacks himself in the face with a baseball.
 
Spring Training starts up this weekend, I believe. It will be our first chance to get a peek at what all the teams look like and play like heading into the new season. I read a few days ago that my Astros assigned Brett Myers as the closing pitcher. We still have a LOT of work to do to return to any sort of relevance (besides failing). As always, though, they are still my team even if we finish 0-162.
 
Spring Training is underway. Right now, I hear my Astros are ahead of the Nationals 2-1 in the middle of the 5th. MLB Network is showing the Yankees and Phillies. The Yanks are up 3-2 on the Phillies. I saw Hunter Pence (former Astros player) cash in a 2-run jack on the Yankees earlier in the game. Still makes me queasy in the stomach to see former Astros doing better with other teams while my current AL-bound Astros are still struggling to be and return to being relevant.


Feel free to assess your teams while Spring Training is underway.
 
Marlins had their first town hall meeting. Tons of fans showed up and chanted "Teal and Black: bring it back!" the whole time.
