Plus, I don't think Kojima want to bring back anybody else from the dead. BB in MGS4 was a little too hard to take for a lot of MGS fans.
I think that actually made sense in terms of the story. Until then, we'd only been told Big Boss was dead; I don't recall ever seeing his body. If I were The Patriots and I was holding the body of the world's greatest soldier for my own nefarious purposes, I'd be telling people he was dead, too.

In light of all this stuff that is adding to the story of MGS. I think I want to play all the previous versions (MGS4 was my first).

I realise it is off topic but could anybody tell me exactly which games I would need to play to understand the full story of MGS?

All basically :dopey:! But you can skip the 1st :)! Man im anxious  for MGS5!

the 1st one? and which one is that? PSX or the old school ones?

You can't really skip the first one. Its how Ocelot gets his hand chopped off and we meet Snake,Meryl, Ling, Otacon, Campbell, Naomi etc etc who we saw in MGS4.

Ok so I searched on gamefaqs to find all MGS iterations on PS1/2/3. There are a few different versions of MGS2 and MGS3 though so do i have to play both or just one?

eg. MGS2 sons of liberty
MGS2 substance
MGS3 snake eater
MGS3 Subsistance

Then there is MGS the essential collection as well?

I have the essential collection, it's no different than what you listed, it's just the games in a bundle. TEC includes MGS for PS, MGS2 Substance and MGS3 Subsistance.

Ah ok, so then what exactly is different about sons of liberty and snake eater?

They're completely different games. SONS OF LIBERTY is the sequel to METAL GEAR SOLID, following the exploits of Snake a few years after the Shadow Moses Incident. SNAKE EATER is a prequel, taking place in the jungles of Russia circa 1964, and is the origin story of all Metal Gear lore.

Great so I'd have to play all 5 of them then :)

Thank you for the information.

Actually, SUBSTANCE and SUBSITENCE are the same as SONS OF LIBERTY and SNAKE EATER, but with a few extra features. They don't really add anything extra to the storyline.

Basically J-Pap you for the full story you need to play

Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2 (either Sons of Liberty of Substance, both the same story just Substance has extra features).
Metal Gear Solid 3 (again either Snake Eater or Subsistance, again same story in both but Subsistance has extra features)
and Finally Metal Gear Solid 4 Sons of the Patriots

The first two Metal Gear 1 and 2 are both MSX games and although they are part of the story I've got by without playing either of them. You really ought to play MGS if you can though, it is an old game now but the story ties in with the other games particularlly MGS4 very tightly.

Isn't there a database that MGS4 owners can download which basically tells the whole story? After you complete the game, you're able to see the timeline

MGS Database Announced
Interactive compendium coming with next PSN update.
by Jeff Haynes

June 18, 2008 - Perhaps you've played through the first three Metal Gear Solid games, but still have questions and haven't had a chance to play Metal Gear Solid 4. Then again, maybe you've blasted through MGS4 and don't fully remember all of the characters and who's connected to what person in the mythology. Don't you fear, because Konami and Sony are going to be releasing a huge amount of information related to this massive universe in a rather creative way. On the Playstation.Blog, Brandon Laurino from Konami Online stated that the MGS4 Database will be launched tomorrow, June 19th as part of the PSN update. A free downloadable application, it features information relating to all aspects of the franchise. As Laurino said in his post, the database will include, "complete storylines, character profiles, relationship diagrams, and much more!"

Obviously, this would be an excellent way to augment any knowledge of the previous games, which is a great addition for fans. However, the MGS4 Database will also contain MGS4 spoilers with easter eggs and other hints. However, if you haven't beaten the title yet, players don't need to worry about spoilers, because the Database will read your save files and black out these spoilers until you've beaten the game once.

Laurino ended his post by highlighting that this was only one of a number of downloadable extras that Konami plans on releasing with MGS4, noting that a new camouflage pattern and iPod song have already been released, and that more was on the way.

J-PaP, I was in the same situation a year ago as you are now. I bought the Essentials Collection, which includes all the special feature versions...almost. MGS3 Subsistance lacks the second disc included in the standalone, which included Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. Fortunately, MGS1 has a history feature to give you a basic story rundown of MG1 and MG2. Aside from that though the Essentials Collection will give you the full experience from MGS1 and up.

Oh, and if you do that, in MGS1 there is a part where you have to look for a codec. Due to a slight change you have to just find it in the manual listed with a bunch of others.

And I have no clue why anyone would tell you that you don't need to play MGS1, but it sets the tone for the entire series, and backdrops the main storyline for the rest of the series.

Anyway, to get as much enjoyment as possible for as little cost as possible the Essentials Collection is your best bet. It is what I did and I am happy.

If you have a PSP you can also play Portable Ops (avoid Acid), which will connect MGS3 to MGS1 a bit better, but is absolutely unnecessary for understanding the story in general.

Also, to get any story details you didn't catch, or if you are more interested in story than playing the games check out Gametrailers.com's Metal Gear Retrospective series. You'll need a couple of hours to watch them all.

Excellent post FoolKiller. I don't know if the essentials box is available here but will have a look. MGS1-3 are only going to cost me around $20-30USD all up anyway. Will definitely look into getting these as I knew I was missing out on something after MGS4.

im not sure if anyone else noticed this but in the bottom right hand corner where the kojima logo is posted it now changes as well and leads to another mystery site.

http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/mask/

all it shows is a mask but it asks for your bithday so im sure when ever the site does change and show what its meant to show it will be a game for an older audience. im wondering if this is going to be apart of the 'NEXT' project or if this is another game entirely that kojima is working on.

Is there a significance to this line?

Nothing new, I'm afraid. I already posted that in the first post three days ago. I guess I forgot to 'regular' post it a few days ago.

Have you seen both masks yet? Some people have imposed mask images over "Raiden's" face. It's almost a perfect match, but I guess they could photoshop it that way.

EDIT: Update

Looks like Parts EU and Asia have the new scene already. It also comes with a number 8.

I wonder what the significance of the number eight never quite fully fading in or out is. All the other letters and characters did it, so why is this any different? It's an anomaly, which means something; Kojima never does something like this without reason ...

SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment)

e3

PR (press release)

6 = June

8 = 8th title in Metal Gear series

Can't take credit for this possible code crack but I have to say it looks pretty damn plausible.

but theres already been more then 8 titles in the MG series.

1. Metal Gear
2. Metal Gear 2 solid snake
3. Metal Gear Solid
4. Metal Gear Solid 2
5. Metal Gear Solid 3
6. Metal Gear Ac!d
7. Metal Gear Ac!d 2
8. Metal Gear Solid 4
9. Metal Gear Solid Portable OPS
10. Metal Gear Solid Portable OPS+

and thats just counting the games not remakes or add ons like subsistance or the VR games or the new ipod game. so i think the 8 has a different meaning.

Just annouced at the MS press conference...... Metal Gear Solid - Rising

Focuses on Raiden.

Looks like Sony has lost yet another exclusive franchise.. :indiff: I think this game will be multiplatform but might be a timed exclusive for 360.

Robin.

MGS ON XBOX. BLASPHEMY! It's going to be a 20-disc set.

No, but seriously, this MS conference has some awesome looking titles. Splinter Cell + Alan Wake + L4D2 = splooge.

Either Kojima found a compression technique he is happy with, or the PS3 version (assuming it has one) will be significantly better.

2:54 left guys :D!

I knew it was going to be a Raiden ranger game. There's a huge portion of story there that was never gone over.

Except for every one they have lost they have added more than five in it's place.

It will be interesting to see how this game is going to turn out on the 360 and how long it will take for it to get released. One thing is for sure, if it's going to be close to the same size as MGS4, it'll be on multiple dics, or require one huge download file.

Also, apparently Kojima's April Fools Joke wasn't a joke after all.

I also see the image they showed said Lightning Bolt Action, instead of Tactical Stealth Action.

If it doesn't have the sneaking I may not be interested too much. That was one of my favorite parts.
