^^ I noticed you only gave 5 mins in between Dunc's message and yours.

You need to give it more than that, it's not a quick, simple task to restart it. Dunc has to re-enable some of the permissions too at times.

Next time, give it 10 - 15 mins. 👍

EDI: @Jai Those sorts of questions can't be answered. Since the range of computers is so vast, you can't say "Use a Dell Inspron 2540 Laptop to run it ;)"...won't happen. However, this is what I suggest:

A Dual Core CPU, as the second core would be used for rendering the world if you install a certain mod.

At least 4GB of RAM. MineCraft is a java program, which means it is also quite RAM hefty. If you have a decent amount of RAM and allocate over 500MB to MC (making sure to have enough to run any other programs in the background as not to lag the entire system)you should be fine.

Graphics don't matter much, just watch your CPU and RAM. The higher stock clock speed on your CPU the better, alternatively you could overclock, if you have the knowledge and cooling. But for Minecraft, stock clock speeds should do more than well enough. An i3 processor, Core2Duo, Pentium Dual-Core, or something along those lines would be fantastic. But if you're looking to save a few bucks, look at an AMD processor in the system, an Athlon II, Athlon FX, or Phenom II X2. Make sure more than anything to have that 4 - 8GB of ram. Ask nick09, he'd know better than me.

Also it's good to have a 64-bit processor. It's a good idea to have 4GB of memory if you run multiple programs when playing minecraft. Right now I'm I'm using 3.55GB while hosting my server on my machine and running Firefox Nightly 64-bit. The virtual machine takes up 2GB of my ram to host the minecraft server and Firefox Nightly and system processes take the rest of the 1.55GB.

Though for regular users you can easily go by with 4GB of memory and a dual core or quad core cpu. You are bes to use a Nvidia GPU or a ATi GPU for graphics instead of using Intel graphics. For my machine I can easily get 200fps in minecraft.
 
I personally have 2GB of DDR3 1066MHz RAM, and a 2.26GHz Core2Duo processor, and I lag like a 🤬. And I've realized that it is the RAM, and that cooling isn't the greatest. On Tiny render distance, I userally get between 14 - 22 FPS, and with OptiFine installed, userally around 80 on Normal Render. However, Far render distance without Optifine userally crashes the game, and my computer.
 
The server only takes a couple of mins to restart even when we're running bukkit. It takes a couple of mins more if I want to restart the machine too. The problem is that I normally flick on the TV while I'm waiting and then forget about it!

The game only assigns 1gb of ram anyway, being java based it mainly just needs a good cpu :).

Java based is more RAM intensive. CPU's do play a factor, but when running java (especially at the size of Minecraft) you need to think that MC takes 1GB, you then need RAM to stabilize the rest of the system as not to cause lag in game anyhow. I guarantee if you have 2GB of RAM and a flippin' 2600K, you'll be no better off than 2GB of RAM and a Celeron. 👍

No you can use 64-bit java and assign the game to use more than 1GB of ram use(file in the .minecraft folder). Tlowr4, I'd not make such a bold claim. As long as you run minecraft and a web browser in 2GB of memory(Well 3GB would be more of the norm in cheap laptops and more so for 4GB in most laptops these days) I would not be amazed if you get good fps. The $320 cheap Asus laptop I tested that had 3GB of ram and an Intel Pentium dual core @2.1GHz ran 30 fps most of the time sometimes getting low as 20fps or high as 50fps. It is not the memory, it's the processor, The Pentium should have less L2 cache(middle guy between CPU and RAM) than my Core 2 Duo had. Not all processors or even memory is built the same. Each different product may perform better or worst than another.
 
How!! Turbo Lag and I have been experiencing out of memory for months, I would love to assign more ram!
 
Got a little forgetful but you can do this trick to do it. I was thinking there was a official file to set it but it might of been mycraft which gave me the option.
 
I have monitors on my screen that show my current CPU usage, RAM usage, and all the other more different usages. I can only assign 1GB to MC, as my OS and other programs that need to be running while I'm playing need more RAM as well. Thus, I get low FPS in MC and my entire system lags as it is struggling to meet the RAM requirements. I do not get good FPS. My average is 12 - 15 most times, but it fluctuates due to room temperature, CPU temperature, other programs, etc etc.

What I'm using is $1800 worth of hardware and software, but due to my constraints in RAM, I have a limited amount of load that I can put on the system. Minecraft is the most intensive program I use frequently, except for when I'm rendering video or such (in which case I quit every program except the renderer)

EDIT: I had thought of using that trick to allocate more memory, and quit all my other applications. However, you cannot use MyCraft by editing that file, as you have to run the .bat. That makes things difficult for me :(
 
I have 512GB card, 2gig of ram and 3.0gigahertz dual core, runs well but I hit a cold pocket every now and then, just for 1 second, I think everyone gets this?
I have MyCraft running with 1gigRAM allocated to the game, not sure why it's not working for you.

I'll be online later to grab a plot in the new world, would have been on this weekend but my girlfriend's mum got taken into hospital so I've been a bit pre-occupied!

Check out the "mycraft options.txt" file. You can set how much memory you want it to take there.
 
Any way to allocate more memory in MacOS? I've got 4gb RAM and use nothing but a browser in the background so allocating some more would be ideal!

Dunc you should go find someone with bukkit already...People are showing off their 1.0 worlds with bukkit!!! wish there was a way to get that going...I wanna see my bright yellow and cyan colours again.

There are unstable builds available but the plugins would probably throw lots of errors. I'm sure it won't be too much longer.
 
Yeah once you get minecraft just let Dunc know of your minecraft username to let him whitelist you. Yeah, TJ13, Bukkit is not stable right now so it's best to wait.
 
So....I'm totally lost in the new village, are there any limits to where we can build?
 
We are now running on the dev build of Craftbukkit and only 3 plugins didn't load.

What should we call the new world then? The best I've heard so far is StrawberryFields.
