Possible reason for such an explosion: The hole for the sprayer wasn't correctly tapped/sealed, so an air leak would allow for the lit fuel to escape through the air leak. There could also have been an air leak on the intake manifold, causing the same effect. The engine was already warm, so all it would take is some oxygen and fuel to ignite.

To be quite honest, I'm glad it happened. Nitrous is a cheap way to win. The owner should actually try doing work on the engine to produce horsepower.

Some people prefer to 'add' 100-ish HP using nitrous rather then heading down the engine internals track which will take longer to get that 100hp. The trade off is what we get to see in the video.

Might as well add a story here:

The company I work for drag races a Skyline R32 GTR and their current personal best is 8.4 @ 162 mph with around 1200odd hp. Their competitor ran a heavier GTR with a bigger turbo and nitrous pumping out around 1400hp. They ran an 8.55 @ 166mph. The need for nitrous came from their massive turbo, without it the lag off the line was so great they only managed high 9, low 10 second quartermile passes..

Nitrous Hiccup.
This could be any number of things but the main answer would be incorrectly installed and tuned nitrous.
Instead of firing thru the pistons it fired the opposite direction thru the intake. Easy answer. It backfired. Normally this wouldnt be very dramatic but since he was running nitrous it was over 10x the normal backfire explosion. You should see this happen with carbureted cars. It is even worse.

1. They weren't concerned about the fact that their buddy beat the Corvette...... they just mentioned the time (getting a personal best time is a big deal to people). Sure, the title of the video is expressing the fact, but that's AFTER the situation...

2. Putting nitrous in a car (especially a Corvette), to some people, is a big no-no..... you can obviously tell that they're that kind of people.

3. Many times when a nitrous explosion occurs at a drag race, the WHOLE crowd reacts the same way these guys did.... I've seen it.

They may be morons, but they aren't so inconsiderate in comparison to my own experiences. Besides, it's not like they can just run out on the strip and give the guy a hug because he's still alive. Feel free to hate, though, just wanted to get that off my chest.

Nitrous backfire usually occurs when you spray too soon.
Typically if you spray before 3krpm the nitrous will build up in the intake and when it ignities it blows! It actually will puddle in the intake if you spray too soon. thats why you need a window switch.

As for the Nitrous, if I had it i'd use it too, win or lose it's a fun sensation especially in a high powered car.

Yeah sure if you're street racing and the other person lies and says he does'nt have it and does, then thats cheating... but thats it....

I was against putting nitrous on my car(mustang gt) because I always wanted a blower or turbo kit for it... But since I wil probably never be able to afford one I just picked up a Nitrous Express wet kit for my car, I am looking to pick up 100rwhp and more than 150 ftlbs of torque! Nitrous makes the most power for the buck...plain and simple/ and when set up correctly its just as good(reliable) as anything else.....
I will probably only use it at the track, so its a great way to make my car faster...

And whomever that was that said they were glad the car blew up........STFU! I cant wait till that catches up to you.......

Nitrous oxide is kind of like fire arms. When used correctly it's fine, but lose respect for it and stuff starts blowing up.

A person who knows the limits of their engine and has strengthened the internals can put on an appropriate amount of power adders, N02 just being the cheapest.

What is wrong is when a person just slaps it on and thinks o0o0o0o 150hp shot!! Without understanding what their engine is in for and up to take.

You're right, but I did use it on my Eclipse. After purchasing a built engine from a local shop, I had the Nitrous installed by a professional. It worked great until I noticed a small ticking sound from the engine bay. No thanks for bent valvestems. I'll stick with a more legitimate upgrade, like a turbo. Less explosive.
