The blower is not safe. It shouldn't be on track with the cars. If the fuel ignited immediately someone could have been hurt or killed
500 miles of racing's worth of debris not being cleaned off the track could arguably be more dangerous as you will have crashes from that every race. You can see it in endurance races that go huge gaps without cautions where they can blow off the track. A car takes a wide line to make a pass and loses control due to the marbles. They could go back to the old roller brushes but they were not as effective or quick.

Though I think a speed limit for cars catching up to the pack wouldn't be a bad idea. If pace speed is 70 then what is reasonably safe but still gives a decent opportunity to catch up?

But ultimately we are looking at a situation that had crazy odds of happening. The track is 13,200 feet long. A car is ~17 feet long. To have the accident happen at that exact moment to put 17 of 13,200 feet in the exact spot where that blower was is insanely crazy. If you consider that normally the cars are under, arguably, intelligent control the odds are even greater. And that is assuming the track is a single line. If I took the time to factor in square footage of the track and all runoff areas the odds would be comparable to winning the lottery.

Man, they're sure treating Danica as if she's NEVER been in a race car before. Maybe they don't know that she's won the Indy Japan 300 and placed 3rd in the Indy 500. She's not getting used to racing, she's getting used to driving a closed-cockpit, closed wheel car. Just like several other NASCAR drivers had to do, like Jaun Pablo Montoya.

From the OrangeCone: Txt from Sterling Marlin: "With everyone looking at that jet dryer and the track no one is looking at the cars. I'd be pulling on a fender."

Absolutely, Foolkiller. This was about as chancy as a proton penetrating the Coloumb barrier. But it happened.

And now for the first time in NASCAR history, the On-track Drivers Social.

So Brad keeps his phone in the car apparently

 That was what, 10 years ago?

Edit: Fans doing the wave in the stands... That's the spirit, guys.

Crowd doing the wave!!!
Trying to recreate Bristol!
And they used Tide to clean the track. O.o

These are great.. That was one of the top 10 Greatest Daytona 500 moments they had yesterday. :dopey:

And they told me in school "Time and Tide wait for no man"
Nothing about man waiting for Tide and time.

So do they keep Tide in stock at the racetracks, or do they send a bunch of safety workers to the local grocery store to buy all the Tide they've got?

OK so they soaked the track to douse the flames, dried it using a ton of sand, took about 20 minutes to brush it all off...

...And they're repeating the cycle by watering it down again. With Tide detergent.

What.

My conspiracy: this was all planned just so they could put Tide on the track and know TV.

Watch, as soon as it first green it will just pour.

The side by side was planned to happen with <50 laps/1 hour left in the race. No one planned on anything like this happening.
Granted, but it still makes FOX look pretty silly right now.

As for the Tide, talk about free advertising.

Making sure they got all the fuel residue off the track.

The soap helps with the diesel/jet fuel.

Wow. The president is expecting the race to resume in around 30 minutes.
Still looks like there's chunks of burnt rubber and metal molded to the surface...

First time the Daytona 500's had a rain delay.
First time the Daytona 500's been on primetime television.
First time the Daytona 500's had a woman on the track (I think).
First time the there's been a collision with a jet dryer.

I love how when racing happens there are commercials but while they pour laundry detergent on the track there is none.

Nope two others.

I love how there's a circle of drivers and then there's Keselowski tweeting. I love it.

You're probably seeing diesel.
Talking about the brown stuff below the yellow line, right?
