As bad as that was, it could have been so much worse.

Just imagine if that was on the front straight and the fuel had spilled into the grandstands or something similar to that. We could be talking the Le-Mans tragedy of the Modern Era.

Also, I think NASCAR needs to make a rule saying that you must go pace lap speed around all safety vehicles

That would be difficult. No spedometer.

Yes the odds are low things like this happen, but why not eliminate the possibility all together?
There is only one way to finally eliminate the possibility of dangerous accidents in racing.

Now don't they keep pit road speed without a speedometer.
Now it doesn't have to be monitored like pit speed, just slow down to a reasonable speed like they did with racing back to the caution

True. For pits speed they based it on the Revs and gear I believe. I suppose they could do the same for pace speed.

Overreacting to an absolute freak accident is unnecessary.
The Dale Jarret 2003 accident at New Hampshire was a freak situation.

Dale Sr's death was a freak accident.

Dan Wheldon's wreck was a freak accident.

Anything that improves safety of Drivers, Safety Crew, and Fans is a good thing for any sport

That's actually how they gauge the pit speed is by using the pace speed to set a certain RPM in 2nd gear that is the pit lane speed

I laughed: hey @DanicaPatrick hows's it going in there? they didn't show you leaving -- FireOnRaceDay (@FireOnRaceDay)

It would be great to see a car sponsored by Ollie's Bargain Outlet win

Sort of like Eddie Cheever winning Indianapolis in a car sponsored by Rachel's potato chips

Drivers are going back to their cars. No rain thankfully. Final 100 miles will be ran tonight. :D

Disagree. That's another subject alltogether.
I know, that was comparing two different sports. But I just fear something similar to this happening with much worse results.

You must always prepare for the worst, and hope for the best

Must... Stay.. Awake... Great race up until that weird accident.

Woohoo! Looks like we're going to finish! Tomorrow is going to come WAY too soon at this rate, but I don't care. I WILL see the conclusion of this race!

169.9K last time I checked, a minute ago.

I'm a pessimist, so I expected a big turn 3 wreck and another red flag.

I'm with you on that one.

You guys must be a few hours ahead of myself. It's 8:27 where I am.

I think this is the worst but best 500 ever. Thanks everyone for keeping the chatting alive. I'm enjoying your company!

It's the 5 hours of Daytona!
