Damn!

The bust luck for him and all my respect as this is not an easy decision, even more being in the top!!

My bets goes fro Mercedes bringing a driver from another Mercedes powered team (I highly doubt RB or Ferrari will let their drivers go) or Alonso. I think this is the best option order for Mercerdes:

1.- Alonso
2.- Bottas
3.- Perez
4.- Wehrlein

I watched the announcment live on Nico's facebook livestream.

For whatever reason, while Jean Todt was speaking I thought to myself "Maybe Nico titled this stream in such a way because he's gonna retire now he's beaten Lewis". I thought that jokingly. 2 minutes later and he says he's retiring and I stare at my phone blindly in shock - and annoyed I didn't put a tenner on it. Hopefully he'll do what Keke did and go quiet on the rest of the world.

Gonna be interesting to see who takes his seat.

Well he raced a long time with Hamilton as a teammate so maybe it could be an advantage for Button. Would be nice to see if Mercedes would pick him up for another year, make him worldchampion and sign Vettel the year after.

He said he was only going to race for fun in 2017. I suppose a front-running F1 car counts as fun doesn't it.
Most racers have giant egos and racing against Lewis Hamilton is never going to be fun. On the other hand, Button is a very mature guy and has long since gotten over the ego barrier of dealing with quicker drivers.

Good for him. Glad he got the title, glad he is doing what he wants with his life. As for who fills? Beats me.

What are Rosberg's hobbies? Does he play tennis, a musical instrument, or dance? I recommend he takes up fencing.

In 2011, Button proved to be the more consistent and better all-round driver in the McLaren that year.

Even if both are older and wiser, I do still think that Hamilton would be annoyed that Button got one over him at McLaren; the year Button finished as runner-up to Vettel. I think there was another season where Hamilton only beat Button by 2 points.

For what it's worth, Button has been Hamilton's best team mate as far as competing with him goes but whether that draws the best out of Hamilton or whether it pressurises him into mistakes is up for debate. We have seen how things have gone when Rosberg turned up the wick.

I made a crack with a mate after he won at Yas to the effect of 'watch him retire now that he won'. Never woulda thought in a million years that it'd actually happen, if only I had put some money on that! Hah

As for his replacement, there is an older POHM that had success in Merc chassis a bit of years ago, but never managed to clinch the WC. Perhaps he'd like to have another go of it?

I of course am referring to Sir Stirling Moss.
Would be great to see him win his first WC, along the way earning the title of oldest world champion and longest gap between F1 races.

You're out of your mind and yet I agree with you...but it would never happen.

Pascal Wehrlein would be my bet.

Not surprised by it, had a feeling he might retire after winning the title. F1 is really demanding and next year seems like it will be much so. He sort of admitted as well he didn't have the speed to beat Lewis too when he is performing at his best. It will be interesting to see who Mercedes choose, imagine if Pascal Werhlein gets it, he will be happy to miss out on Force India if so.

Toto's phone right now...

In a more serious answer. What about Susie Wolff? Wasn't she competitive with Bottas and Massa in 2014 when the Williams could hang with the Mercs? And isn't she married to the boss of MercF1? Seems like that'd be the perfect back door for her to get a seat in a top flight team, and would be a solid #2 to Hammy. Would be the first team with 2 girl drivers.
She's clearly got speed and consistency.

Can you give me the winning lotto bet for next week please.

She also has a bun in the oven.

Well, I was not expecting that! I have huge respect for Nico Rosberg retiring from the sport as the champion at such a young age. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours. Perhaps he could pop-up in the WEC.

Audi Sport no longer has the most surprising motorsport announcement of 2016 as Nico has well and truly snatched that from them.

The driver I would want to see in his seat is of course Fernando Alonso as he is wasted at McLaren. Having said that, who knows what 2017 could bring for McLaren Honda?

Where did you heard that? Always heard that she was multiple seconds slower each lap and that she parked the cars sometimes in the gravel traps.

Now this really came out of nowhere. There could have been many more successfull years to come for him. Wow O_o

And now I ran out of championship-competitive drivers I like... :boggled:

Maybe she can have it before March. Great timing either way

She was generally .2 or so of a second off. Both her practice sessions were cut short with engine problems, though. Hardly a performance issue.
