That is a shock! However, when you think about it and remember his reaction after the final race and how he talked about the incredible intensity he felt throughout, maybe it's not such a surprise. He obviously poured everything into this season and he achieved his dream. Fair play to him. Well done Nico and good luck!

Sent my application to Mercedes.

You'd have been better off writing them this:

Dear Mercedes-Benz,

I'm an arrogant F1 world champion who thinks the sun shines out of his own arse. I started with a front-running team and was runner-up in my debut season before winning the title the year after.

Therefore I feel that I am a perfect fit to lead your team forwards.

Yours sincerely,
Lewis Hamilton Jacques Villeneuve

Regarding replacements Pascal Wehrlein is the best and obvious choice for Mercedes of the available drivers, it's possible they could buy Bottas out of his contract but he's not very good, an outsider could be Carlos Sainz.

Bottas is managed by Toto Wolff, which means he should be in with a shot. I wouldn't be surprised if they chose Ocon and put Wehrlein in his place at Force India. They seem to prefer Ocon so I'd be surprised if they promoted Wehrlien over him.

Do Mercedes prefer Ocon or was that a choice made by Force India between the two? It seems like Mercedes put Wehrlein in the car more often for tyre testing.

It definitely caught me by surprise, the news. But I think he made the correct decision by ending his career on a high. Afterall, he has achieved what he wanted to. Be in F1, win a race, win the Monaco GP, grand slam weekend, hattrick of victories and finally win the title. He's a family man and we all know that F1 takes a lot of his time with his friends and family, the fact that he has a daughter at home. Without realizing, he has been in F1 for a decade and has achieved a lot over the time. All the best for his future.

It's never gonna happen but I would love for Jenson to hop into that silver arrow. He's not one of the very small group of the very best drivers out there, but he's part of the equally small second tier. In my opinion anyway. Plus I just like him and the way he drives.

Only 3 drivers have won a championship for Mercedes since 2008, Button's one of them... surely got to be good for one year?

And when you put into perspective that he did all those things and is only 31 years old, that's extremely impressive. There's a lot of drivers who are only just getting to the top level around that age but Nico's able to step back, be with his family for as long as he wants, and still have time to get back into racing in the future if he chooses. I've got nothing but respect for people who are willing to retire at the top of their game.

Fair play to Nico. Nothing beats quitting whilst you're ahead.

I know he's said that he informed Toto about his decision, the day after the the race but I do wonder, whether Toto already had an idea about what was coming.. It's just wild speculation on my part but I got the feeling Susie Wolf knew something everybody else didn't, in the C4 pre race coverage. Anybody else get that same impression?

Regardless of all that. Congrats to Nico Rosberg, 2016 F1 WDC.

I shall miss him and Lewis battling.

Just heard the news and I'm stunned, why on earth would you retire with at least a few more years left in you connected to a highly competitive team in what will possibly be the most exciting F1 years to come.

For me it just screams that his heart isn't/hasn't been in the sport (like many other successful sportsman mind) and now that he has got the top prize he's off. It's kind of insulting to the whole concept of taking part and especially disappointing as he was given a golden ticket into this whole world in the first place thanks to Daddy. People would kill to be in his position last weekend and wouldn't want it to ever end!

Sure people spin the whole family reasons stuff but I'm not buying that from a 31 year old. He has far more time to spend with is family than the average working person and everyone else manages with a far less affluent life. An F1 drivers prime is hardly long anyway so there plenty of time for a home life afterwards.

I'm sorry but you have disappointed me Nico. If every first time champion left after they won people would go off F1 pretty quickly! He could have at least stuck around for a year to defend his title even if it was just out of showmanship.

This is a great move by Nico. Retiring now will leave people wondering how many more championships he could've won, when I think the question we would more likely have been asking at this time next year was if he could ever have won a championship again.

So apparently furious Ham-fans are starting to claim that Rosberg's sudden decision to retire is proof that he conspired with the team to steal the championship from Hamilton.

Just thought I'd pass that along in case you needed a good laugh to get through the rest of your day.

As someone who's on the road 4-5 days a week, about 40-45 weeks a year, you really can miss your family. No amount of money can bring that time back.

Add to it the risk of injury, fear of death, added stress, meeting constant commitments, getting zero breaks from the press, your life's minutiae put into the spotlight while treated as if in the public domain...maybe it all gets a bit tiresome?

Um. How does that compute exactly? He's all around the world for 20 Gps a year, not including testing and all the other commitments.

Hamilton manages to have plenty of free time to jet around taking selfies on various yachts all throughout the race calendar.

I understand that but being an F1 driver is hardly an oppressive job. It's certainly not the average away from home job that most people live with.

These are wealthy individuals getting a very cushy life provided for both themselves and their family. It's not like he can't have his wife and kids in the pits every single weekend if he wanted to and there is a private jet ready to take him anywhere to see anyone.

The compensation for the stresses of the life more than outweigh the inconveniences.

True, I've had a live-away job so I know what it's like. However, I think @Robin's point was that having his family around wasn't a problem given his resources. I'd dare to add that it's a much greater problem for the mechanics who are certainly in it for the love of the sport more than the wages or the social life.

He grew up with the first few, the last couple will have really mounted in the last couple of years. Maybe you're right. He's certainly been part of F1 during the worldwide explosion of social media.

They were going at it the whole season, so why stop now for the winter break? With Lewis losing the championship fight they surely won't stop till he wins it again. And after that it surely will be something like "Oh wow. What a guy. Beat all the other drivers, his teammate and even his own team that's constantly working against him. Best driver ever. Ayrton who?" :dunce:

I'd just like to point out that Nico isn't actually World Champion yet... that doesn't happen until the trophy is in his sweaty mitts, and that's not for a couple of hours yet :D

... an asshat of a colleague who does bollock all but lark around and belittle you, putting in the occasional absolutely stellar shift when everyone's watching and blaming everyone else when it doesn't work...

Bernie will say to Nico before handing it over "Did you not know about the legally binding defending your title clause?" :D

Absolutely laughing my ass off at the people "Disappointed" or calling Nico a wuss for quitting after one title. Wonder how many of you can manage all those years of racing, sponsor commitments, testing and the like (ontop of dealing with a drama queen teammate that's always faster then you) and then along comes having your own family. Hell, I'm pretty much single forever at this point and even I can understand him putting his family over another title or bratty POS fans like some of you.
