No assists, a joke?

Everyone is open to the play the game the way they want (I use no assists) but I do agree with the point the OP is trying to make, in that I don't feel I am driving an accurate representation of the real car in GT5 due to all manner of things (cat converters or ABS on pre-80s cars, for example).

Hopefully in GT6 the cars will come 'as they were built' and there will be no options for electronic aids etc. for cars that were never built with them. If a car is too wild to tame, bad luck.

Whilst it is easy to turn electronic intervention off and imagine you are driving a 70s muscle car, who the hell knows exactly which combination of GT5 driving aids represents a R34 skyline driving experience unless you've driven one?

I think you misunderstood, that's not what I mean at all. I'm saying ABS is a necessity due to the fact that braking without it is so grossly unrealistic. Tires completely lock up with less than half brake pressure applied regardless of speed or tire choice. IF the braking sensitivity were corrected I think the ABS would follow suit and react correctly as well. Sadly, I don't see that happening. :ouch:

The problem is, the default setting is much too strong for most cars. However, PD were kind enough to include manually adjustable braking sensitivity in the tuning menu, which I adjust often, depending on my cars' state of tune and tire selection for the given race.

Couldn't give a toss what others do with their game.
Personally, I use Manuel Tranny NO AIDS on Race car's, only ABS 1 on Production car's UNLESS I know the car has no ABS then I turn it off. I like to have as much control over the car as possible. Also I only use Sports Tyres on Production car's. END

Say what you will about people being cocky, but the fact of the matter is that it's harder to drive the cars with no assists.

Plus almost every online room I enter that has skid recovery disabled has all the other aids disabled as well, so if I want to be competitive I need to know how to drive with them off.

Agreed. Just get good without them and it ceases to be a problem.

Me, too. I don´t care, how many electronic helpers cars have in real life. Just with every aid off, you get the most intense driving experience.

YES, exactly what I would like to see.

Like I said earlier, many of the Nurburgring lap times are set with the cars in stock unaltered form. That clearly means some of it's stock assists were activated seeing as it was using the stock ECU. Some of the reasons for the R35 being so good at handling is because of its ATTESA-E-TS and Vehicle Dynamics Control.

TC 1 and ABS 1 for me usually, but of late like with the latest seasonals I've been turning off TC to challenge myself and finding it allot of fun, I have driven manual as well since GT4 and it is now coming into its own for me.

ASM makes me allot slower it totally cuts the power mid corner as it tries and put the car back in line at the slightest waggle of the tail or understeer.

Theres nothing wrong with using the aids thats what they are there for, don't let anyone put you down for it :)

Some cars like the M5 (i'm sure there are others) always have some electronic aids on in GT5 even when all switched off.

I never join a room with assists on, I don't use assists therefore don't want to be beaten by someone who isn't really riving the car.

Enthusia handled this great by doing what has been mentioned here a few times: it had an option to automatically choose what assists were turned on based on the car you drove. I don't know why more sims don't do this, as it wouldn't be that hard to collect that little piece of data when you're doing the rest of the car anyway.

Anyways, I'm one of the "assists off, with ABS=1" guys. I don't push it on others, but I do know that it can make you that much faster, so I'll advise some people turn it off if they're looking to shed seconds off a lap.

Obviously you're going to turn on all assists on the road cause if you don't, you will cause an accident. When you drive on a track, certain assists will hinder lap times, so you turn them off. Why don't you sit down, cause you don't know what's happening

The problem is that every manufacturers often use their own systems and it would take a huge amount of time to recreate all different systems.

Personally I can't see the problem. Usually you can turn off the traction control in your car in real life, which you will do if you go to a race track.

I can see where the OP is coming from, although the thread title nullifies every seriousness I had:dunce:

That being said, if I'm running a room, I only restrict SRF. There's no point in not allowing people who cannot drive without them to not be able to complete one lap:ouch:

PD wouldn't have to replicate the systems really as most are probably just a mix of the systems already included in the game.

And I've yet to come across any car I've ridden in where you can turn off assists, and seeing as most cars in GT5 are production vehicles, a lot of them would have it on all the time.

I too can see where the OP is coming from, and by the plethora of chest thumping the "no aids" people have no clue.

Personally I set up all race cars with no TC or ABS, brake balance/strength (I WISH PD would give us separate options for those two settings) is then set to 3 front and 1 rear, sometimes 4 on the front in cars like the Stratos Rally car...DAMN that thing is loose at the rear on the brakes.

Cars pre 1990 I turn off aids as well, but 1990 onwards I set abs to 1 and 6 front 4 rear brake balance/strength. TCS is almost always turned off depending on whether or not I can handle the power as I don't put higher than Sports tyres on production cars.

It would be cool if someone could do a chart of the cars in GT5 and what aids they have in reality.

I know I will be hung from a tree for this, but I feel it needs to be brought up.

Am I the only one who has a good laugh at all the folks around here who constantly want to remind you how they never use any assists? I'm being serious, do they even know what realism is?

I for one use assists based on which car I am driving.
Am I driving a full blown race car or am I driving a stock production vehicle.

Surely if I go down to my local Lamborghini dealership and ask to drive the Murcielago and how to turn off the assists I will be laughed at. Therefore, you better believe I turn on TCS, ASM, and ABS when driving it in GT5.
Why you may ask? Because the real 🤬 car has a full blown state-of-the-art Electronic Stability Control system.

Furthermore, do those same people understand that some race cars do indeed have a form of traction control and/or other assists?
Traction control was only banned in Formula 1 at the start of the 2008 season. That says something right there. Therefore, guess what? When I drive the F2007, yes I turn on TCS.

I think every car should have it's own specific assists. And if a car doesn't have ABS or TCS it should be highlighted on the options menu for that car so I know which one to turn off.

I totally agree, I do enjoy the totally mental shelby 427 without any aids except ABS=1 (I think that the brake system in GT5 is to sensitive when using a DFP). But driving a 430 with all aids on can be fun for a pleasure cruise. I also firmly believe that you should use all the aids that the car has in real life and remove as much as possible that's not. One thing I would like PD to implement was a system like the one ChicoMaloXD suggested, I don't know what system each car has as standard by heart but have to investigate every car that I want to drive. A "real drivers simulator" would have those things enabled by default. (Just my opinion) The only aid that I always turn of is the SRF, beacuse that's a game aid not a thing any real car have. But that's just me, you mileage will differ.

Of course is it in everyone's right to choose any number of aids to suit their preference.

When it comes to Race modified / Race Cars then I prefer to have the aids to set to the level that the rule set you are simulating. Like I do in the endurance series I run at GRC. We follow the ALMS rule set as close as possible allowing for TC.

But there is always some thing that's always enabled in my games, damage. Either real or limited. But that's a different discussion.

We all know the GTR has very advanced traction control, stability control, torque distribution, and antilock brake systems. My question (and problem with the game concerning all cars with highly advanced computer systems) is this. What settings do we need to use to accurately emulate the driver aids Nissan or Ferrari or Chevy or McLaren have in place?

I couldn't care less which aids other people use. Personally I find the game more satisfying and can post quicker laptimes without them but hey-ho, you bought the game, play it how you want.

I would offer people who have been using aids but would like to drive without them this tip:

Tune the car, particularly the LSD. There's some great advice in the tuning forum if you don't know where to start. Having the car set up properly (particularly some of the hairier beasts) is essential to being able to drive it quickly and under control.

ASM does not exist in real life and is a GT term.

ESC is more or less and for a lack of better explanation a combination of ABS and TCS in which the car detects driver input error and corrects it via automated braking to individual wheels and steering aassitance to avoid spins. So basically, ASM. I do not believe race cars have actual ESC systems, but some do use a form of TCS and ABS.
I guess you are talking about non race cars, because they rarely are allowed to mount any driving aid(no tcs, no asc, no abs, etc)

About the record laps if the car has a switch for TC or other aids are always made with all of them off. Almost all sport and supersport cars have that option, the exception could be ABS but since ABS in GT5 is another gaming aid and not a real driving aid is more suited for a simplified gameplay than for driving realism. Real aids were made for public road safety, no one wants them in a track and in videogames those aids work even better than real life.

ASM is the name of the stability control driving aid in GT5, it's a real aid present in most modern vehicles but not all car brands name it the same.

I recommend you a little search before being so upset about this subject.

Aside of better lap times, and to develop driving skills, this vid explains perfectly the difference between the no aids fun factor:

I wasn't justifying anything. More or less pointing out that those of you driving stock production cars with all assists off are actually removing realism.
I'm just a little fed up with the arrogant attitude most of those people seem to portray as well.
I agree everyone can play the game the way they enjoy, just quit pounding their chest and always feeling the need to remind everyone how they never use any assists.

I Agree, I too really don't care what the next guy Is doing in terms of Settings and stuff, but I kind of Disagree about Turning off assist making the game unrealistic. What's real Is that When Tuning anything is Possible. If I wanted to turn off ABS or change my ECU or Swap a 20V engine into my car I should be able to do it.

Oh and I got into an utter argument with this idiot kid telling me I Suck at Drifting because I was running Sport/Soft tires. I had to inform him that despite PD forcing people to run Comfort Tires, that usually people run Sport or Better tires. He then informed me that GT5 isn't real life. I had to remind him GT5 is the "Real Driving Simulator". If he didn't try and call me out like that I wouldn't have said a thing.

What ever happened to bragging "rights"?
On that note, what happened to unscheduled play time, good quality saturday morning cartoons, kids playing outside, phone booths, and lucasarts adventure games?

I only use the assists that are there in real-life cars. :P
Even then, I typically leave traction control off (for non-serious races) because I love whipping about a corner then immediately gunning the throttle. It's just fun. :D

That said, I won't judge you.. unless you use skid recovery force.
Then I will get the entire forum to collectively point and laugh. :V

I also believe that everyone should play the game how they want...

I'm using my old DFP wheel and for me it's all aids off except ABS 1 on lower powered cars. For higher powered cars and those with an evil amount of oversteer, I use TCS at levels 1 to 3.

The reason I use ABS and sometimes TCS is that it's not easy judging the biting point accurately on the DFP wheel and that I'm quite aggressive when racing and rather untidy in the corners.

Hoping that I can improve my technique to reduce the use of driving aids even further.

^^This

No assists = fun
Assists = Drive you

Not only does it drive you, but it doesn't do it right (for max speed). That's because, as stated before, it's designed for safety, not speed.

The only assist I believe in is ABS. Reduces stopping distance drastically, while allowing you to steer without losing control. This is greatly needed when racing if you don't want to be stuck having to break in a straight line only. It's the only "real" aid that actually makes you faster.

Also, the argument that if the cars IRL have them, it's ok in game; no. It has the same effect on every car, whether it has them IRL or not, and that is it makes them slower.

On an ending note, there's obviously a lot of misconceptions about assists. I asked this guy playing online why he was using Skid Recovery Force... his reply was that his real life "bimmer" has skid recovery. LOL

On second reading i think the OP has self confidence issues and has trouble driving the cars without aids, thus has come to justify his way of playing in order to perhaps convince himself that he shouldn't feel bad about it.

This is just the same as the guys who feel the need to brag about their non usage of aids.

In creating this thread you have pretty much been a complete hypocrite.

I'm same. I adjust the assists based on what car i'm in. A lot of the assists do hinder some cars performance and a lot of the time i will keep traction control to about 3 and skid recovery force on with ABS 1. I liek teh skid recovery becaus ei'm a huge fan of rear wheel cars but i'm very heavy handed with the R2 button and if i dont have skid recovery on i'd just spin in circles after a harsh corner. I'm not a bit fan of stability assist tho, personally i find it hinders the majority of cars cornering performance
