No assists, a joke?

I agree everyone can play the game the way they enjoy, just quit pounding their chest and always feeling the need to remind everyone how they never use any assists.

The OP is quite pounding the chest of his way to play the game... go figure. :)

Turning off traction control is the first thing you do at a track in a modern supercar, going sideways is fun!
Many of the Nurburgring lap times are set with the cars in stock form, meaning things such as TCS and ABS are activated.

Not at all. I was merely pointing out that those who talk about realism and talk about not using any assists ever are clearly kidding themselves.

I first started with all driving aids to the max. It was fun because it was easy to drive but after a short time I realized that it actually slowed me down. Then I switched to no aids and learned to drive and complained about people who drive with driving assists. When I raced against people with some level of driving aids, I found that I'm usually midpack or lower. So now, I've learned to race to the competition. I'll setup my race car to whatever is the norm for that race.

Driving assist for me is traction control to 4 and abs to 7-10.

I use the dual shock controller in the game and, after thirteen years or so of practice, am getting pretty good at it. I don't use any AIDs, not even ABS. Ever. And I will never own a car in reality that does not allow me to permanently disable whatever electronic assists it does have. Nor will I ever posess a vehicle w/ an automatic transmission. These things are nothing but a distraction from what it is that I enjoy about driving.

After all, why have done for you what you can do for yourself?

I will even go so far as to say that if you use these things regularly, you will undoubtedly be a worse driver for it, at the very least when attempting to drive without them. Furthermore, precise throttle and brake modulation are two cornerstones of racing that you will not learn while using TCS/ABS on a regular basis.

As for our incessant need to argue; nothing feels better than having your own opinion validated, except, that is, successfully devaluing the opinion of others. As we have seen here time and time again. We all cheer for our team while booing the opposing side. It's human nature.

On that note: SRF is just plain bulls**t.

That's just it. GT5 aids ,like other games, are not designed for realism but to make the game's physics more forgiving. I have no doubt it easier to fly around Nurburgring in GT5 with all aids off than with stock cars IRL with these aids like TCS/ABS. Even with all aids off sims still fall short from the real thing.

For me, every car in the game is easy to drive with no assists when using a wheel. When using a controller on the other hand, I had to use some traction control when driving race cars. Im not looking for realism though, Im just enjoying the game.

I don't really see too many people bragging about not using assists to be honest, guess Im not looking at the right threads.

Couldn't agree more.

Sometimes when I want full blown realism, I do use some assists, but that is very rarely.

That being said, for 99% of the game I don't use assists. Why? For one, It improves driving skill and two, it makes the cars go faster. Win-Win.

I dunno about others but the reason I use no assists - except ABS 1 for almost every car - even if I'm driving a car that uses driving assists in real life, is because its a challenge and its harder than normal. Also, I figured that in real life you have to deal with G-forces and other stuff which can't be simulated in the game so I thought it made sense if I made the driving assists as hard as possible.

Nothing wrong with using assists. I'm not the kind of person who looks down on people who do.

I haven't seen anybody bragging about not using assists.

When I'm playing I only use ABS 1, because the game/pedal doesn't give me enough information when locking up. But that's me, I don't care what you prefer as long as you have fun. The ability to use driving aids are there for a reason

You're probably just very good at ignoring them, which is a quality I need to learn obviously. It's just sometimes hard around here where people bring it up where it doesn't even need to be brought up like they have the need to prove something.

I agree, but I have noticed some other games seem to model the car based on it's default settings when the assists are turned off. I've actually wondered if that is why the modern cars in Forza seem to be harder to lose control in without assists while older cars will be all over the place. Hard to tell though with its always on steering help.

I have no idea why everyone gets so upset about people using assists. If you're in a room where SRF hasn't been blocked, see if there are others who are actually using it by clicking their name on the prerace screen. If there are, then enable it for yourself to make the playing field level and go racing or find a new room. As for the other assists (with exception of abs since non-assisted braking is very unrealistic in game) I prefer not to drive with them on because just like in real life they kick in too early and either take power away too soon, too much, and for too long or hinder the cars ability to rotate in certain corners, and prevent the faster lap times. For this reason I have absolutely no problem with others using it because it often gives me a leg up on the competition right off the bat. Assists have a place in the game for those who benefit from them but (with the exception of SRF which actually adds grip and reduces wheelspin in a non-intrusive way) they're not providing an unfair advantage so there's no reason to get upset about it.

...with exception of abs since non-assisted braking is very unrealistic in game...

Surely you jest, sir. I find GT5's version of ABS to be more unrealistic by far in comparison to real life. Do elaborate as to what it is you meant by that, if you would be so kind.

TCS - 0
ASM - Off
ABS - Depends on the car

At OP, I know which cars have TCS/ASM and which don't, but I prefer beeing aids off, gives me a better feel for the car I'm using.
Pagani Zonda R is horrible to drive without aids, when I was a begineer I used aids, drove it a lot, now I've given up on that car, gotta train with Pagani more.

Many people turn off asists because they like it better that way. These same people claim that you are free to play the game the way you want to, yet they always turn ALL assists off in most open rooms. They think this will weed out inferior drivers and help fill the room with experts such as themselves. While this is fine in theory, it doesn't actually benefit anyone since half the room is filled with people trying to appeaze their superiors by driving the way that they are lectured too (it will make you a better driver) but all it really does is cause most of the field to spin, crash and take out half the field anyway. It would actually improve the overall racing if the rooms were set up to allow people to drive to the best of their ability, be more comfortable, competitive and not crash nearly as much. Wouldn't the racing actually be better ? And consequently, more fun .... for everyone ?

Blah, blah, blah. Rant about how actual cars have various aids. Excuses for using aids.

If you want to use aids, that's fine. Nobody gives a crap. You don't need excuses to convince us that it's okay for you to use them. We aren't all driving without assists because of a belief that no real cars have any aids, but rather because some of us want the extra challenge and the chance to become better drivers.

Driving a car with aids is like riding a bike with training wheels. If you need them, that's fine. Just understand that some of us wanted to grow up and pull them off for the experience of riding a bike without training wheels. I don't want the game driving the car for me; I want to drive the car for me.

I don't care if someone uses aids, not all people are the same and everyone has the right to play the game in their own way.

Blah, blah, blah. Didn't bother to read or understand the OP or any of the other posts the OP made. Excuse to be an ass.
If you don't give a crap, why did you feel the need to do exactly what I am talking about?
Thanks for that. 👍

I set lap times with all assist off, it show a higher level of skill. Clean laps at the ring takes more skill to do it with the assist off then on, while ASM slows you down quite a bit Skid Recovery is completely bogus &. TCS takes out the need to be more skillful with your inputs.

I got no beef with peeps who use assist, everybody plays the game how they like, I just believe lap times with assist off reflect a higher level of skill. Ohh btw I drive assist free on the DS3 & DFGT, controller or wheel it makes no difference to me while I agree wheel > DS3 it's not really in question. DS3 - assist takes more skill then DS3 + assist, DS3 - assist potentially being the most difficult of all.

I have no problem with people using assists. I don't use them in game, and haven't yet in reality. I haven't driven a Lamborghini either, but I'd be sure to turn them off if I got the chance. It's how I like to drive. GT5's assists are very basic anyway. They make you slow, and they are boring to me. None of the cars in game need them really, and for most cars, they are horribly inaccurate.

I'm glad that I can turn them off in game even on cars where that come with undefeatable ones.

I think the OP is directed at those people who turn up their nose at gamers who use assists. Look at some of the competitions here in the online section and most of them restrict you to all aids off.

Now if you believe you are faster without aids, why should you have a problem with those who use aids?

Unless they are race cars whose federations have banned aids, or classic cars whose real counterparts didn't have aids, TCS, ABS, ASM, should be fair game for the rest of them.

I think you misunderstood, that's not what I mean at all. I'm saying ABS is a necessity due to the fact that braking without it is so grossly unrealistic. Tires completely lock up with less than half brake pressure applied regardless of speed or tire choice. IF the braking sensitivity were corrected I think the ABS would follow suit and react correctly as well. Sadly, I don't see that happening. :ouch:

I dont believe the prototype cars in Le Mans series have any ABS. They have TCS.

Nascar nor Super GT, nor DTM have any electronic "helpers". DTM used them for a while but then banned it.

What puzzles me is those who use no driving aids apart from ABS. Drivers lock up all the time in real life, watch an F1 race and look for tire smoke when somebody's under pressure from the car behind on entry.

Also its more fun to lock em up every once in a while. The first corner at the Nurburgring GP/F would be alot more interesting without ABS, but for some reason all the hardcore unassisted folks want to leave it on. Strange.

I don't care if people use aids. I do, however, mind tuners using aids and then posting tunes created using them. Worthless.

I wasn't justifying anything. More or less pointing out that those of you driving stock production cars with all assists off are actually removing realism.
I'm just a little fed up with the arrogant attitude most of those people seem to portray as well.
I agree everyone can play the game the way they enjoy, just quit pounding their chest and always feeling the need to remind everyone how they never use any assists.

The realism point is a moot point.

because the assist you have in GT5 isn't base on those in the road car, I can go into detail many types of traction control system IRL for example but in short your TCS ingame =/= the TCS on the real car, not the same in principle, not the same in effect.

so whether you run with or withont assist, it is just as unrealistic.

If you are fed up with some people feeling proud about running no assist (which I do, not because of realism, because I like total control), well just live with it, cos honestly if you feel the need to make this thread you are already paying too much attention on what others do with their game, play it your way.

I like drifting.

Therefore no aids. Although I am tempted to use TCS on some LMPs, I guess short shifting and thorttle control works just as well.

I'd like to use ABS=0, but there is a big problem in DS3 L2,R2 buttons or in GT5...Why they are not linear?.. (like on XBOX)
