Expert Says iPhone's 'Retina' Display Claim is False

Apparently the iPhone 4's "retina display" is mere marketing puffery.

ZoomRaymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, said that Steve Jobs was using a misleading marketing term when claiming that the new iPhone 4's display exceeds the limit of the human retina. In fact, Soneira said that the device's display is reasonably close to being perfect--perhaps the best on the market--however Jobs took it a little too far during the keynote speech.

Soneira pointed out that Jobs' "puffery" was a symptom of a larger problem seen in the industry today--manufacturers are exaggerating their claims about display specs, and feel that it must be done because everyone else is doing it.

"The marketing puffery is now in control," Soneira said. "Everything that’s being said now is just this super-amplified imaginary nonsense, and the only way to get people’s attention now is making more outlandish statements."

He offered an example, saying that Sharp's four-primary-color claim with the Quattron TV line is utter nonsense because all movie and television content is produced and color balanced using the traditional RGB. Although the fourth yellow primary is now included in the Quattron series, it will have nothing to do because yellow is created using mixtures of red and green primaries.

But what's the deal with the iPhone 4 screen? Again, more puffery. Soneira said it was inaccurate to measure eye resolution in terms of pixels, as the eye actually has an angular resolution of 50 cycles per degree. The only way to compare the resolution limit of the eye with pixels is to convert angular resolution to linear resolution. Once that is done, a "retina display" would actually have a pixel resolution of 477 pixels per inch at 12 inches. Soneira apparently achieved this knowledge after studying displays for 20 years. He also possesses a PH.D. in theoretical physics from Princeton.

So why not just be up front with consumers? Why throw out all this over-bloated information? Because companies would go bankrupt.

"[Market puffery] hurts companies that make good products, like Apple, because they can’t really put the specs out because everybody is lying," Soneira said. "If you and I have the world’s greatest display, and we launched it and put down the real scientific numbers, we’d go bankrupt because our numbers would look like the worst display being made."

During the keynote speech, Jobs said that the iPhone 4's display packs in 326 pixels per inch, and that this resolution exceeds the limit of the human retina. Jobs said that the human limit was 300 pixels per inch for a display positioned 10 to 12 inches away from the eyes.

I would have thought that the fact the eye is 'analogue' optics it sees everything down to even an atom. The limitation comes with our brains ability to process that resolution which is why we don't actually see those things eventhough the information is there. Its like with a traditional camera, it recieves simply whats coming through the lens but its limitation is the film and photo printing resolution. Thats why they are superior to digital cameras.

Its a good screen for sure but Jobs puffs it up and brands it so everyone will know what to call it when they say 'are these screens coming to the iPad, Macbook? etc etc'. The general consumer will be fooled into thinking its the most revolutionary thing on earth!

Robin.

Your analogy is flawed. The brain is not like film, that is the back of the eye, the retina and cones, and they do have limitations on resolution. And variables, which is why you can see more detail in the starts when you don't directly look at an object of interest.

The reason the eye is so great is because it has a higher range of colors and lighting it can see, which is why your eyes will pick up more detail in the dark, etc.

They can give things a snazzy name and claim this, that and the other what really matters if it works. I love my iPhone and iPad so upgrading to the new iphone is the next logical step for me, I have a 3G and didn't bother with the 3GS as my contract wasn't up and also I never really saw the value in upgrading early.

You have to admit though that they really ask for it when they give a display a really silly name (I know the reason for the name don't get funny) they could have just told everyone it's resolution and mentioned it's an IPS display and everyone would have been happy, I suppose tho it keeps the discussions going for longer after the reveal. I'm surprised they didn't give the side band a quirky name as it seems to me one of the cleverer design/functional items on the phone.

It's mostly for marketing reasons as they sell millions of them to non-geeks (i.e. not us!) and need give it a swish name to differentiate it from the rest of the pack. Most people haven't got a clue what the resolution or IPS means.

I like the idea of naming the new band, how about the Awesome Encompasser(TM)?

Just while I'm here, had a go on the iPad yesterday. Didn't really get it. Just felt like an iPod for the elderly, to be honest, and I was struggling to find something to actually do with the thing that didn't make me think 'Oh, so it's the same... but bigger. Great?'.

Don't get it. At all.

I don't think it's necessarily non-geeks, so much as people who like to think they're geeks. Calling something a 'retina display' would have no effect on my mother, as she has no knowledge of screens beyond 'is it shiny like my laptop or matte like our TV?'. I'd say it applies to that sub class of people who like to think they're 'in the know', but haven't the common sense/can't be bothered to actually question the information they're presented with.

That said, if Apple hadn't given it a silly name then there's a good chance nobody would ever know, and that's just not very Apple - if they've done something even remotely clever, it's not going to be kept a secret. To be fair I wouldn't have looked it up myself unless I was making something iPhone screen resolution specific. Or I'd have looked it up out of sheer boredom one night and then promptly forgotten it.

Jobs said that the human limit was 300 pixels per inch for a display positioned 10 to 12 inches away from the eyes.

His definition of 'beyond the limit of the retina' was false, not his claim. He meant from that particular distance which I'm guessing will be an average viewing distance.

Motorola Droid, physical keyboard. Verizon, awesome coverage. Emulators and tons of open source fun goodies to be had...sounds like a winner to me!

Also I have an iPod touch 3G jailbroken with multitasking (or backgrounder) and emulators and a few open source stuff, isn't as good...especially for a fiddly guy like me who needs physical keys.

One other thing: Can you EASILY replace the battery on this new iPhone or should you STILL send it in...stupid slenderness over simple functionality.

Has to go back into apple. The slots which looked like a battery access panel are for the antenna.

Looks like Apple is taking release notes from Polyphony Digital. New release date is July 14th.

No, that is not correct. The initial batch that will be released Jun 24th is already sold out and the earliest delivery you can get if you order one today is July 14th.

It may have a physical keyboard, but it is one of the worst on the market. Plus slow CPU, and a bunch of other crap is dated on it. HTC Incredible or EVO both trump the hell out of the Moto Droid...

Moto Droid X might change that, and thank god it doesn't have some piddington physical keyboard.

I have no problems using my Droid's keyboard. Of course, its no Blackberry, but it's perfectly usable. It just takes time to get used to it. I had the same thoughts as you when I first got it, but after a week, I much prefer it over the touch screen keyboard.

YOU'VE DONE WHAT?!

I only asked to be told when they MIGHT be appearing, not to bloody reserve one for me! Stupid lot.

...anyone want an iPhone?

Thanks for the correction. Effectively, however, July 14th is the release date for me.

On a related note, iOS4 is now out. :) Still undecided whether to install it on my third-gen iPt right away or wait a few days and see if there are any bugs...

That was fast

I decided to just go for it and install, so far so good. The home screen wallpaper feature is very nice, as are the iPod playlist improvements. Well done Apple :)

Mmm, I'm debating doing the same. But seeing how it'll only just run on my 3G I'm a little scared of making it run like a slow thing.

Yes, me. Seriously.

What is it, black 32GB?

I'm waiting to see what they offer me in the way of contracts first, all they seem to have done is 'reserved' one for me and haven't said when I have any hope of getting the thing. Technically my 3G is only 6 months old, so I suppose I should sell any new one and use the money to buy something else. Like a medium sized house. Or I might fall in love with it and want to keep the thing. Or I might not want an £11,000 a month contract, and will end up just saying no.

But I don't know yet - I'll keep you posted.

OS4 is great. My 3G was all poopy and slow before.... can't get much slower. At least I have everything organized in folders now. This is an OCD's dream come true.

I had iOS4 loaded on my 3G but was so slow I couldn't bear it any more so I'm in the middle of restoring back, hope all goes well.

I upgraded the OS last night on my 3Gs. I like the new changes, the folders are a nice touch as it was getting a little ridiculous when I had to wade through pages of stuff to find an app. As yet I haven’t experienced any reduction in performance.

Good, I'll avoid then. Plus I don't really have enough apps that it's worth organising them anyway.

Jailbroken already too.

Only reportably at the moment, but im sure they are going to release the tools needed soon.
Im still running 3.1.3 jailbroken on my 3GS, and im not willing to update untill they jailbreak it, as ill loose all my free GPS apps ect!

But theres not much tempting me to be honest, muti-tasking im not worried about, the wallpapers sound the best thing to me lol :)
