I agree with DSG. Though, like Johnny, I hit the rev limiter very easily during the race, I don't think it's a negative in particular. I think the rev limiter limits the exaggerated effect of the draft and does not enhance the "bunching up at corners" effect. I have experienced "bunching up" during races at La Sarthe in the past even when cars didn't hit the rev limiter, the "bunching up" is a consequence of the strong "weak" draft and the fact that we were racing in relatively large packs.

No offense Sag, but that makes no sense....lol. The draft is the same whether you have a rev limiter or not. If you weren't hitting the rev limiter you can use the draft approaching a corner to slingshot by and create a few car length gap for safer braking. As it was, you would draft up to someone and pull out to pass and get slowed down by the rev limiter, meaning you can't create as much of a gap entering the corner, making the field all bunched up tight entering the corners.

Has anyone noticed that we only have trouble on Tuesdays? Perhaps PD is tinkering with the servers when we race. Also, there is an optional PS3 firmware update, we should all get it before Friday's race.

Which is exactly why I held the throttle at 95% when in the draft instead of 100%. You don't have to hit the limiter if you don't want to. I would hold at about 95% throttle and be able to draft up, slingshot around and make the pass without hitting the limiter and losing momentum. The real cause of hitting the rev limiter is keeping your right foot flat on the floor. The source of your speed/momentum in this scenario is more slipstream than throttle so lifting your right foot just a hair has no real negative impact, as opposed to a 3-4 second loss of momentum incurred by hitting the limiter.

Draft w/o revlimiter effects and no bumpdrafting:

Everyone except the leading car picks up a crapload of speed delta, close as much as 1.5 second gap to the leader and a smaller gap between them. Go into the corner with wildly different speeds, with unpredictable braking distances.

Draft w/ revlimiter and no bumpdrafting:

Speed delta is limited, but still there. Enough for fewer cars to catch up to the leading car. The ending speed on the straight is within few mph lap after lap.
Depending on the length of the straight, cars one and two may or may not end-up closer than they would if there was no rev-limiter (due to 1st car being overtaken sooner w/o draft and then leeching of the draft too). All the rest should be further spread out since after a couple of seconds in the draft everyone (xcept the leader) is going the same speed.

Draft w/o revlimiter effects and bumpdrafting:

2nd car catches up to 1st, gives it a bump but the rest are still catching up to them, bunching up some.

Draft w revlimiter effects and w/ bumpdrafting:

2nd car catches up to 1st, gives it a bump or two and they both go just short of rev-limiter with proper throttle input. Nobody catches up to them any more. Braking points are consistent lap into lap.

So, like I said, I don't see your point, Johnny.

How i see it is everyone needs to stop worrying about the rev limiter thing. It was part of the race and everyone had to deal with it, it is what it is its not that big of a deal. The only thing from hearing from some of the guys is the lag issue, which i think can be dealt with if you at least start with turning the mics off. If that doesnt work definetly need to look into a public lobby.

We went through all this several months ago when "the bug" was popular, tried several combinations and nothing made that big of a difference. Once we get 12 or more people on track at once it will get a bit laggy, no matter the situation. If problems continue I can disable mics (must be done in the room settings before opening the lounge, this is the only thing that makes any kind of improvement) but I'm not going to do that after one laggy night. Our group enjoys banter as much as racing. 👍

We will never run our races in a public lobby, it is not that big of an improvement and generally has more negative consequences than positive ones. I'm here to race, not spend all night kicking randoms out of our room and none of us want the constant distraction of the chat box popping up with "so-and-so entered the room" "so-and-so left the room". I'm somewhat convinced (even though it runs counter to the facts) that having me as the actual host will improve our situation, so I will make sure my name is at the top of the list on Friday.

You was one of the few surging Tuesday Brandon. Maybe give things a reset before entry.

Resetting track is killing this game. Look it up. ;)

If any slots come open for the Friday race may I be considered for it? I would register for the Tuesday night event but am already committed that night.

Thanks

I always reset things and clear the cache before joining. I don't think out problems were due to any one thing or person, just one of those nights. Our others races have run quite smoothly so I tend to think we're doing things right, but every now and then the game or the servers or the Internet get a little screwy, it happens.

Resetting the track is a necessity unfortunately and I've not noticed any problems in our races directly related to doing that, besides loss of tire noise but we seem to have rectified that problem. Again, if problems continue we'll look into solutions but we only have one week left so we will keep on keepin on for now.

If it makes you guys feel any better, other sims aren't immune to connection issues. Had an iracing race yesterday, where I got taken out of the lead by a 'blinky person' - someone with an unstable connection, who literally appears/disappears on the course. This time he blinked right onto my inside and apparently had a very different line through the corner, so I ended up on the grass. He then proceeded to hold-up the entire field for a few laps, since everyone was scared to overtake him, which allowed me to catch up some. Then he disconnected for good, thankfully.

Well, with this, my earlier post was fairly pointless.

In any event, I will be available to fill a spot should one come open tomorrow night.

Will also keep an eye out for future O.R.C.A. series as per advice from Owens.

^I'm sure there's space for tomorrow.
If anything - I'm not gonna be there tomorrow.

Are we racing on Friday before Labor day? I'm 50/50 for that one atm.

Johnny's version:

Draft with rev limiter reality:
2-4 car pack, cars behind use the draft to catch up to lead car and get by but can't make any real significant gap because of loss of speed due to either hitting the rev limiter or holding the throttle at 95% so as not to hit the rev limiter. Result: Cars all enter the corner really close together resulting in a lot of bumping and rough cornering.

Draft without rev limiter:

One can time a pass and build up a significant head of steam and maintain it well after the pass, to pull out a 1/2 second or so gap leading into a corner (1/2 second at 300 km/h is 130 ish feet) resulting in less bunching up of the field and smoother and less contact in corners.

Without the rev limiter you still can't pull away from anyone so you can't break away from the pack, but you can make a bigger gap after the pass than with the rev limiter (whether you throttle back or not) entering the corner, resulting in cleaner racing.

Another thing being on the rev limiter does is make it much harder to leap frog. Lots of guys were bump drafting as a result (including me after I got passed by guys bump drafting and got pushed myself), something I though was discouraged for this season.

Anyway, it's done, hopefully we don't have to do it again next season.

The Friday race at Grand Valley the room was bugged.I did 2 laps and dc'd from the room in practice and tried 6 times to get back on the track with no luck.

To be fair, nobody else had problems that night. This past Tuesday everyone had or saw problems during the race but nobody had trouble staying in the room (except Carr who couldn't get in the room). I'm not saying the DC's were your fault (obviously), just pointing out the differences in the two scenarios. I really think most of our problems on Tuesday were due to having 12 people on track, that's right at the threshold of what the game can handle smoothly and if anybody's connection is less than stellar the issues will be amplified for everyone.

Race night tonight! I'm going to do some tinkering after work and see if I can get the time change to work properly. It worked fine in all our practice sessions but on race night it really fouled up. Lancer said there was a thread discussing how one of the last patches broke the time change, I'll see if I can find it and figure out if anything can be done. I personally think the time change race is spectacular and if it had worked properly we wouldn't have noticed as many of the problems that we had on Tuesday.

I don't expect we'll have any connection issues, our crowd has been smaller on Fridays and that should help. Most of the issues I saw on Tuesday were likely due to a crowded room, if we see ten or fewer drivers as we've had so far on Fridays I expect us to be fine. Lounge will open around 9pm EDT and Qualifying will start at 10pm EDT sharp.

See you in France!

Would it be ok if I go ahead and add the host account?

Sure. We've only had medium attendance on Fridays so far, if that is the case tonight you're welcome to run with us. Being this late in the season you won't really have a chance at a good points finish but you'll get to enjoy some very close and clean racing. 👍 If we do get a large crowd tonight I may have to ask you sit out but you could watch from the lounge if you want. So far we've only had 8 or fewer on Friday so we're likely to have a spot for ya.

Here's the one I was talking about.

Load your track up, then go back into the track selection menu and select OK, you dont need to select the track or anything, just hit OK. Then the track will load for a second or two (much faster than the initial load), and it will be back to normal.

Try that, I guess.

Great! Thanks. Will get that done soon as I get home from work. Still gotta dig the car up and make sure it's set to spec.

Thanks Lancer, I'll do some experiments after work and see if that solves it.

Easiest way is to just go to your settings sheet and pick your B or C setup, should have everything set to default (presuming you haven't already setup multiple settings sheets for this car). Slap some SS tires on, adjust your brake balance to taste, change the oil and get ready to race! 👍

I'm not sure I've ever used the car. Since it's an RM I'm fairly certain I have it. Just have to dig it out of the Nissan stable, dust it off, shove some erl down thar in thet crankcase 'n take 'er fer a spin. Might have to spackle some blue paint on 'er first though.

The car I have is the Silvia Spec-R Aero (S15) RM '02. Is this the correct model. The OP car title doesn't have Aero in it.

Yes, that is correct.

Is that a Kawasaki in your avatar?

Thanks

Car spackled and bobs are breaking in it in now.

Wow, that is a very large engine for a motorcycle.

Wow, that is a very large engine for a motorcycle.

Not nowadays. Some road bikes have 1700cc engines and the big touring bikes (Goldwing) are carrying 2200cc last time I checked.

Ok, here's what testing has shown: When you change to the track the progression doesn't seem to work and it doesn't respect your time of day setting. It goes to midday and stays there. This can be fixed by making any adjustment to the time/weather settings (i.e. change 13:00 to 13:10) and hitting OK. This does a soft reset of the track (doesn't clear times) and kicks the progression into gear, as well as setting it to your current time. If you do a hard reset (change to diff track, change back) you have to start all over.

The bad part is that it breaks the timing monitor which means the starting grid will be wrong. The driver tree you see on the right of your screen will be correct but the timing monitor will show --:-- for everyone's time.

Therefore we will do a manual grid line up tonight. After qualifying we will all pull out on track, leaders will park just before the first left hander (right before the Dunlop tire) and the rest of the field will line up behind them as I type out their names. Stay parked on track, DO NOT pass anybody on the track, wait for the countdown to finish and then we will race from the traditional standing start after it resets us to the starting grid and says "GO!".

EDIT: Thanks to Lucky for helping me test.
