When I read that for some reason I pictured your dog in the your avatar saying it

Yes, I vote Brandon draws up a track list and we get racing 👍 My only request is that we keep at least 1 variation of Motegi.

I thought it was his dog too. Lol. Probably because the mobile app put the pic right above "Hi".

I'd like to do a few more test sessions at some other circuits this weekend to make sure we get the best selection. I have a few in mind that are shoe-ins unless, for some reason, they prove to create bad racing.

GVE-R
Nurb GP/D
Motegi East (that's the longer of the short tracks, right?)
Probably Motegi oval, perhaps as a double-header instead of one long tire conservation festival (which I still really enjoyed). Opinions?

Other possible candidates:
Monza
Indy Road
High Speed Ring

Maybe keep it to one race, just don't give full points to the 'winner', give 1/Xth of points for positions after Y laps? Maybe even two of these interim 'check points'.

Yea like Grand-Am does for the Rolex 24 at Daytona. They give points for the North American Endurance Championship every 6 hours. We could give the top however many points after certain lap points.

I don't think my abacus can log more than five cars at a time. :dunce:

It's a neat idea but I'd rather not have a race that requires me to watch replays, track results and do math. But come to think of it, a double-header would require modifying the spreadsheet and that's something I want to avoid as well so it's not likely to happen. I'm trying to create a streamlined formula that we can re-use each season with minimal effort (to help avoid lengthy delays between seasons). 👍

^Then I'd drop an oval and go with HSR. While tire saving strategy would still be possible, it's be much harder.

The lineup looks good.....I would like Highspeed Ring to be in there ... gets my vote. Woo!

Cape Ring Periphery?? (Little different)

Don't hate the oval..:scared: I thought tire wear strategy was a part of racing? I like the Motegi Oval a lot, not because I had the double although that's a part of it, but because we were able to race in a huge pack, side by side, for dozens of laps, without any major incidents. Not very often you can say that in GT5 💡💡 Even if it's a mid-season non-points event (or a point or two just for showing up to encourage attendance) I'd still like to race there again.

And I'll go against the grain with HSR. I don't think I've ever been involved in a really clean race there but that's just my experience. Reminds me of the situation at LeMans...constantly very high speeds don't usually produce good racing outside of ovals.

I second this. 👍 I though it was a lot of fun.

The amount of tire saving is way too excessive, made possible by the redonkulous draft. Nothing realistic about that.

I thought the draft was the same at all tracks. How can tire saving be excessive?

I'm surprised you thought that. And also surprised at the need to explain the obvious. Look, I'm not trying to somehow undermine the legitimacy of your double-win, I just found the oval race insanely boring when I tried to execute a strategy that would net some points. I suspect HSR might end-up being similar, but I'm willing to try it. If we're doing the oval - I'm skipping it for sure.

I'm confused. In your first paragraph you praised our ability to race at high speeds in a tight pack. In your second paragraph you suggest that if we race at high speeds in a tight pack it will surely be a bad race.

Obviously tire wear is more pronounced at the oval and tire conservation is more important. It doesn't have anything to do with the draft being stronger or weaker at a certain track, just that it plays more of a factor at certain tracks than others.

In my first paragraph I said we could race side by side for many laps without incident...I didn't say at high speed. And I said, "constantly very high speeds don't usually produce good racing outside of ovals." But I would think we could race side by side at Indy or Daytona if the Silvia had the gearbox to allow that. The oval allows that to happen mainly because everything is predictable and there aren't any sharp changes in direction or heavy braking. HSR isn't the same and I said "my experience" there hasn't been good when it comes to clean racing. It might be different with this group, you never know.

And that was exactly my point. This group does much better than the general group or public lobby hooligans. We've done a few shorter races at HSR recently and had no problems at all which gives me confidence that we could race there without issue. If I do choose that track it will be the first one we go to so if there is any nastiness it will be done with and out of the way quickly. I have a lot of confidence in our drivers and I feel like in the right conditions we can handle just about anything.

But as I've stated before, in my opinion only a large handful of tracks on this game are acceptable for points racing. We've tried city circuits before and as you've stated (both publicly and privately) they are not suitable for points racing. Carnage is almost guaranteed and I try to avoid that when points are on the line. PD put a ton of time into Cape Ring, it's a beautiful track but it's ruined by the loop and the jump. There is one version of it I find acceptable for points racing (Cape Ring South) but even that configuration isn't very good. Trial Mountain is ok, Deep Forest is unacceptable. We've tried Eiger, it's no good. I'm ok with Autumn Ring but nobody else seems to like it. In fact, most of the GT5 original tracks are not useable for points racing in my opinion (Grand Valley being the only real exception).

This severely limits our choices for circuits that can be used for official points races. I tend to stick to real-world tracks, but by this point we've run most of them to death. We have never done an official race at High Speed Ring and until very recently have never even done practice races there. But our practice races showed that some good racing may be possible there and I think it may be a justifiable risk for the benefit of racing at a track we haven't been to before. The only real concern I have with the track is what I would call turn 2 (the left-hander before the bridge), we'd be carrying a lot of speed into that turn and then getting hard on the brakes. But in our test races the Silvia seemed to get through just fine even when there was some bumping and understeer.

Long story short, I'm willing to try HSR to add a bit of fresh air to the season. We've never been there before and most of the other circuits on the schedule will be ones we've raced at many, many times. Our test races show that clean racing can be had there and it has a very "oval feel" to it so it will be a good replacement for Motegi Oval. 👍

That turn is much faster than it looks, and there's so many lines you can take through it. I'd be more worried about braking for the s-turn.

HSR in reverse is possibly worth a try too. One advantage of HSR in either direction is that there's no hard braking required for the first corner.

We ran into two issues with the reverse layout: 1. We actually hit the rev limiter on the straight (in standard layout the big sweeping curve keeps you from hitting it). 2. When you exit the tunnel the light is blinding and you can't see for a second or two, by the time you can see the track has made a sharp turn to the right as you head towards the grass. I fear this would make for some hairy situations so I think we should stick with the standard layout. Either way, your point about no heavy braking for the first turn is a strength of this circuit. 👍

When I find the motivation in a few minutes; I am going to run some laps if anyone would fancy to join.

Anybody gonna be up for some test racing tonight? Maybe a little earlier than normal Friday time, around 9pm EDT or so? I have a few more tracks (listed earlier) that I'd like to run a few more times before making my final decision on track selection.

Also, RDAardvark and I would like to organize a one-off Euro time friendly event with the Silvia since they didn't get to enjoy it with us this season. Saturday or Sunday could work for me, early afternoon would be best. Perhaps a longish race at HSR to see if good racing can really be had there? Possibly kick it off with a short race at Motegi Oval? Let me know if anybody would be interested. 👍

I'd be interested but I won't be here this weekend. Good luck, hope you get a big field!!👍

I may be available this evening for some testing.

I'm hoping to be available to join in for a few races tonight. Open lobby or do I need a FR to join the room for this?

Send a FR to PSN ID ORCA_Champ and I'll accept it before I open it up. It's a private lounge so the ID won't be online but we'll be in the lounge.

What time tonight?

I'm going to jump on now. It's storming really bad here and the power has already gone off once for a few minutes. Better get some racin in while I can.

EDIT: Or maybe not. Looks like the power came back on but the cable/internet hasn't yet. Stay tuned.

Sent, but looking unlikely I'm going to get on tonight now :(. We'll see.

Mine blinked again a few minutes ago. The part you're getting now seems to be the worst, the wind has calmed now but it's still bucketing down rain. Lots of lightening still.

Looks like it's about to get bad again though.

We'll probably get that in the early morning. We already got a pretty good one, it was just a little pop-up one.

We had that one around 1:00pm today, dropped a ton of rain in a very short time.
