There would be the choice, if you don't want to race certain categories, don't... Stick to gr3/4. Today we have VW Golf, Gr.4 GT-R and Road GT-R, 3 one make races and the general feeling on this based upon everyone I've spoke to today (Lobbies, stream, friends list) Is that today sucks. Boring boring boring. Had the VW yesterday as well?....
"PD's limited resources" were spent making a versus AI league/mode/campain, rather than adding to and fixing sport mode. Everyone I know (who still plays) wants sports mode to work out. It can be very very fun.
If its a shrinking playerbase you are worried about, fixing and enhancing sport is key. I had a large GT5/6 group die on this game. Most chose PC2 for the better track variation, those who did buy are 'taking a break until online is better'. Bored of the same 6 tracks, 2.5 categories and a menopausal penalty system. Gran Turismo should be a title that doesn't have to worry about head counts.
I didn't mean a shrinking player base (i.e players leaving the game). I meant (these figures off the top of my head) if you have 1,000 players online with x3 events to choose from, lobbies and player matchmaking will have a bigger pool to choose from for each event.
If you give the same 1,000 players 15 events to choose from, matchmaking those individual events will suffer because the player base is more divided and "thinned out" over those events.
I'm sure once PD have analysed the information they glean from player behaviour and preference for races, slightly more choice would become available but it's early in the games life cycle. Let's see how it pans out
