PC strikes back at Mac commercials.

hahahaha i like the last one the most. :)

The punchline was so unexpected

Hmmmm...that's just sort of embarassing really. Not only do they fail to make a PC come across as impressive, they're also total bull. Especially the money one, most creative types tend to use Macs and Graphic Designers/Photographers/Directors tend to earn a hell of a lot more than the average office worker.

The weekend one doesn't actually make sense, as Macs tend to attract women due to the way they look! It sounds shallow but it's been true for me.

The last one is meant to be a jab at iTunes I guess, but unless you buy all of your music from the store you CAN share it with as many other computers as you want.

And the first one doesn't even have a point. It tries to make out that all Mac users are stoners. They could have pointed out some of the bad points about Macs such as the price or the availability of repairs, but they decided to go down the abstract route by the looks of things!

Videos like this just go to prove that people have to imitate Apple in a desperate attempt to match their clever marketing.

<insert comment about how the videos didn't make sense or how they were funny>

Seriously. I saw some other PC vs Mac spoofs (they were different than this) months ago, and they were actually funny. Maybe not completely true, or maybe they had silly points, but at least they didn't make you want your time back.

You think their marketing was clever?? Those mac vs. pc commercials are some of the lamest most misleading commercials I've seen. Oh, you can edit music and record stuff on your mac - as though it isn't possible on any other OS (on EVERY other OS).

These parodies are about as lame as the original commericals. They play on the fact that the average PC user is older and richer (and so he can get the young hot girl who's interested in him for his money), the same way Mac commericals play on the fact that the average mac user is younger and cooler (and so they're not so boring).

I think that parodies hit the nail on the head.

I think the idea behind the original ads was to show the people as the actual computers, not the users. Hence the Mac being younger and cooler which they sort of are.

The original ads also never suggested that other operating systems can't do video editing. It just suggested that it is easier on MacOS which, from experience, it is. Definitely.

IMO the parodies fail to hit the nail on the head somewhat because they're grasping at ideas that don't make much sense, for the reasons explained above. The idea of a Mac not having to stay away from a virus infected PC was brilliant I thought. It made much more sense than turning up 15 minutes late to work because you got stoned. That's just very bad stereotyping.

It's both. The basic premise is "you are your computer". This kind of marketing erks me in many other areas of product placement that attempt to get customers to define/validate themselves by purchasing a particular product.

How many times have you seen a commercial that implied that buying a particular brand of jeans made you cool, or laid back, or adventurous.

How many times have you seen a commercial that implied that buying a particular car made you exciting, fun, or attractive to women.

Shoes?

Hell, your razor even.

So then Mac wants you to equate owning a mac with being trendy. I think it makes sense for the parody of that to get PC users to equate PC ownership with being rich.

To be honest, as the biggest Macintard on this forum, I have to agree. I don't use a Mac because it can edit videos, create podcasts, and stay away from viruses. I use it because it simply outclasses PCs in nearly every aspect. It's more... refined. Nearly all the things I do now I can do on XP. I just do it in OSX because it's going to be a much more pleasant experience.

I know all about that sort of thing, I'm doing a BA Hons Degree in Advertising. So i sort of like it, it could help me get a job! ;)
Personally i bought a Mac for compatability reasons and because I much prefer it for my graphic work. Mac users are generally very creative types though, whereas Windows users are a much wider audience. It's more difficult to pinpoint a certain audience with such a wide range of customers, I guess. That's why it doesn't make much sense to me.

Couldn't agree more. My brother only used my iBook for 30 minutes and he commented on how user friendly it was compared to his Windows system.

Like we just spoke online :)

I'm waiting for OS X Leopard. Waiting for some cash. Core 2 Duo Mac Book (white), 2GB RAM, 80GB hard drive plus an external hard drive, apple min-dvi to dvi adapter, Mac keyboard, a nice usb wireless mouse, 1920x1200 monitor :) And this will be a desktop at home use :) :)

Enjoy your abundant mac games.

Oh wait.

lulz.

Mac has the greatest game ever. It's called "Lets search Google for a game that runs on a Mac"

No one's ever finished it.

But I thought macs were for fun stuff!

Why don't they make games for Mac OS? Is it because the OS is difficult to program for? Is it because they wouldn't sell enough to cancel the development cost because there's a huge minority of people who own and use Macs? Surely there are, or could be, other reasons, but those two are possibly the most important.

I have nothing against Macs, though, since I've seen them in action. I'll agree with Tracy that Mac OSX is much more refined, fancy, and sophisticated in its operation. There are many pleasing graphical affects, they seem to work every time, there's no delay, and a neato fade of somesort is always there to mask any delay. The only reason I don't have a Mac is because I don't feel like learning another system. And the business world tends to run on Windoze.

That.

If OSX dominated 90% of the OS market, we'd see tons of games on Macs and few on Windows.

Why aren't Macs as mainstream as PCs? They're definitely cool and functional enough to be popular. Aren't they user friendly? Are they too expensive?

None of that. Its because Apple is stubborn.
Want OSX? Buy a Mac Computer. Want an install disk? Tell that to the guy at the store so he laughs you out the door.
Microsoft got a stranglehold on the market because they have installation disks and the like in addition to computers with the OS preinstalled from many different manafacturers. You can have a Dell, a Gateway, and Alienware, whatever, all with Windows. Or, you can have it shipped blank and install Windows yourself.
Want an Apple OS? Buy an Apple computer. It comes with it preinstalled, and it is the only brand that has it.
All things considering, its amazing Apple has as much penetration as it has.

Why would a company deny the extra income created by many other assemblers selling their OS, like Dell, HP, Alienware, etc.? Obviously Microsoft jumped on the chance for more money. If a company came to you and offered to pay you to use yoru product, wouldn't you take it?

You want a ****ing installation disk, you got one. Plus Macs come with a disk, but it's not like you'll ever need to reinstall, unlike Windows. And don't give me no BS about how Apple forces upgrades. My G4 is still running at 450 mhz, and I run Ubuntu Linux and Mac OSX 10.3.9 on it no problem. Photoshop, no problem. Recording software (Garage Band) no problem. Plus the machines look so much nicer, they run so much smoother. The only way I got mine to crash was by putting in some bad ram (Unwittingly btw). Find me one major typsetting company that doesn't primarily use Macs. Find one major art firm that doesn't use Macs.

I think people need to lighten up about the ads. Everyone knows that they are not entirely accurate and they're not actually showcasing the Mac's true advantages. But who the hell wants to see an ad about upcoming support for the Solaris File System or the value of Core Animation to developers? The ads are quick and dirty, and Apple's formula for the Mac ad might actually be working.

1. Funny, lovable PC guy
2. Smug, young Mac guy
3. ???
4. Profit!

Some of the ads are even funny, like the one with the secret agent making fun of the constant Vista UAC prompts.

I've had a Mac for almost two years at work now. It was my first real contact with such a machine, and over the time, I've grown quite a detailed picture of what I think of it.

In terms of OS, OS X is pretty much on par with Windows 2000 for me. Okay, OS X looks better, and it does some tricks Windows can't, but then again, it also has some problems Windows doesn't.

Then there's a lack of available software for the Mac. If you want to do the things you can get the software for, you're fine. If you wanto to do something else, you're screwed.

The hardware itself seems to be alright, if a bit slow for a 1.6 GHz CPU. I was told that this has improved since they use Intel components though. And the flat design of the G5 is prone to generating quite some noise in a quiet office environment.

So, as somebody who has seen both sides, what shall I say? My conclusion is that a Mac can work in certain situations, and most likely looks better than any PC in your living room. But for the same money, I can make you a PC that can do more, is much faster, versatile and silent. Therefor, I prefer the PC.

I don't like the Mac ones and these arn't any better.

Only because the jobs most creative types go into uses them, while Windows targetted office needs early on.

 Because that is all a computer is for, right? And this trend is changing. The few PC games I do play have mac instructions and requirements next to the PC instructions and requirements.

Can we say Sega? Fortunately a Mac is not a gaming console.

Steve Jobs left the company and things went downhill fast. He came back and started restructuring and then created the iPod. He made the Apple logo trendy again and the Macs are beginning to cut into marketshare (not by any great number mind you). I have a feeling that if he can keep Apple trendy it will eventually be common to see Mac and PC titles side by side, or with the Windows emulator it shouldn't be a problem with anything over time.

My personal experience with Macs was in college as a telecommunications student. In communications you need reliability that is better than can be offered by a PC. All our computer labs were on Macs and everything I did could be transferred to my PC at home. The only difference was that my PC hadn't been left on for three years without a problem the way a few of the Macs in the building had.

I have basically decided that my next computer will be a Mac. Most of my gaming is done on consoles and any work related things can be transferred back and forth without a problem.

Plus, I just saw a news report this morning saying that Vista problems (not working with iTunes, wireless cards, etc) might not be fixed for as long as a year.

As for the ads, they are annoying (both of them) and I can't believe that kid is going to be in the next Die Hard.

If someone where to make a public vote for "mac or PC" how would you think that people on this thread would vote? DWA would propably go for linux... Just a thought... :)

Seriously I hate Mac. I rreally do.

Why is that exactly?
For how long have you used MacOS and Windows?

By the way, Bootcamp anyone?
While I'm here I'd like to mention that Macs come with install discs, they can be used at any time if you want to re-install MacOS or repair your system, and it's much less confusing than trying to do the same in Windows.

I wouldn't say it's confusing in Windows. You stick the CD in the drive, it says "Choose an option".

- New Installation
- Format and Install
- Repair

No real brainwork invovled.

I've used Macs, I've used PCs, I've used Unix and Linux. They have their advantages and disadvantages. Anyone who thinks that one of these operating systems is the clear best is mistaken.
