Hopefully they'll come up with something similar. I don't want one console having big advantages over another. Competition should be close 👍

It sounds like they'll be using the same processor as the PS4, so that's something, but of course the bit that really matters is the exclusive games.

Yeah I think it will be a lot closer than the 360 and PS3.

My only fear for MS is that they overdo it with the kinect. I have heard a lot about it taking up a lot of CPU power.

Apparently it's going to be able to recognise fingertips and facial moods. All speculation of course, but exiting nonetheless. I am looking forward to seeing how they make use of it, because its really gimmicky on the 360, so is the move for that matter, but the move seems to have proper applications in the PS4. Like we seen in announcement with the modelling.

Also I seen in a video that kinect was going to be mandatory for the nextbox. Not so bad if it comes in the box, but we all know that MS don't put things in the box like that, (ahem wireless receiver ahem). Also what if it breaks? Of course it's all just speculation.

I'm sure the Kinect will be included with the console if it's required to even function! Microsoft aren't quite that, er, brave. As for the gimmick thing, they need to work out how to make it actually useful in a game (how do you use Kinect to actually move a character around in a game?), and I think that because it's standard now developers won't mind putting some effort into it, so it should be quite interesting. This also means games may be trickier to port, though, which I suppose is what Microsoft is hoping for.

Wow, I genuinely thought I was in the Xbox thread, that's what you get for using the app first thing after you wake up... Sorry for the off topic.

Honestly the controller looks too bulky for my taste. But for me free online service was a huge edge over Xbox. Now that that's over, I would have to see what Microsoft brings it to the table before I make a decision. Looks like they vamped the online service big time though with all that social media jazz.

I haven't seen anyway stating that the core part of PSN (online gaming) will occur a charge. In fact I read somewhere that to provide free network features is a cornerstone of Sony's stance with the Playstation.

It better still be free,I mean they can still claw money back through games and the price of the console.

Something I haven't seen mentioned here yet, what are thoughts on it not playing CDs or SACDs?

I can't say I ripped too many CDs with my PS3 but it seems odd.

I'm still waiting for another confirmation.
SACD is all right, CD is a bit of a bummer, since I loved to use my PS3 as audio device (it has a fantastic output).

I've seen that, I'm careful with Japanese interviews that weren't officially translated, or have at least an extra English version available though. My experience tells me to wait for another source to confirm it.

I have a lot of CD's from Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N roses... and I like to listen music on my ps3 so its important for me that PS4 support CD's...

It never really caught on (and neither did DVD-A) because for some reason the world preferred lossy MP3 music rather than something actually higher quality than standard CD. Baffling why but that's what happened.

This has probably already been discussed but in case it hasn't:

Do you guys think it will be possible to play on PS4 via the same network as PS3 is using and play with PS3 users the same games at the same time ? so that I could play with people from my PSN list regardless if the own PS4 or not.

If this will not be possible I will stay with PS3 till over a half of people from my list owns PS4.. or till new GT is released only on PS4 or MGS5 is released only on PS4 - by the way - why is MGS5 not shown at all after this one movie ?...

That is probably because they only knew of mp3 as a standard and simply didnt want to change.

Consumers can be funny like that.

Simple answer is we don't know. You'll have to wait for Sony to announce their network plans.

Well true but it annoys me because consumers moved forward with video, we went from VHS to DVD then DVD to Blu-Ray and I'm sure when 4k Blu-Ray gets here we'll move to that as well. They only get better but audio hasn't gone anywhere forward. They tried to introduce high-res formats like DVD-Audio and SACD, consumers said no thanks, I'll stick with my compressed MP3s and my 2 Watt PC speakers. It's odd, but that's for another topic entirely.

SACD failed because the difference in perceived quality simply wasn't there for a lot of people to justify the higher cost of players and discs. Being in a bitter format war with DVD-Audio didn't help; and even when the PS3 did support SACD they did it in a really half-assed way. It's not too surprising that the PS4 wouldn't have it, but no CD support is pretty odd.

When it comes to sound for the ps4 I would like them not to go lazy on the sound quality.

But I see your point regarding the inability to move on to better high-res sounds.

I used the CD ripping feature multiple times, so this news kinda sucks. Oh well, looks like I'll have to use my computer for that.

A minor off-topic from me but I had to reply.

In terms of audio only (as in CD) I quite agree with you, but I actually believe that for many audiophiles the reason is simply that Vinyl is still the preferred high-end source for music (although I do own 1 SACD and my original fat PS3 has been used to play it - Big Guns, best of Rory Gallagher).

In terms of AV we have seen audio move on with the advent of high bit-rate LPCM audio tracks, which do make a huge difference in the quality of the audio for films, documentaries and in particular games.

LPCM is the one area that for some (OK maybe just me) the PS3 still beats out the 360, it can and does make a huge difference on certain titles to get HD audio.

Audio BDs with LPCM 24 bit and 96 kHz are just pure sex for the ears. <3
Only Vinyl can beat that.

I would still like to hear why they dropped CD support though (if it got dropped, I'm still not fully convinced).

For those of you that missed the PS4 reveal, here's the Abriged version.

Edited for hilarity, of course.

Awesome album. 👍
I pretty much agree with everything you say here.
I only own a couple of SACD's and my original PS3 is the only device in my home that can play them. I'm not surprised that feature would be dropped from the PS4. Wasn't it dropped from later PS3's anyway?

As for no CD support I'm pretty sceptical about that.
Now I'll admit I haven't been following the PS4 hype train closely but isn't it stated in the specs that it has a CD player (read only)? If so what other purpose other than playing music cd's would it be there for?

Putting gaming aside is there any other news on what the PS4 can also do as an entertainment hub. Nowadays I use my PS3 more so for other features than gaming.

Cheers Shaun.
