i was just wondering what real f1 car the one in the game is the most similar to

As far as I know it is not based on any real Formula 1 car its just polyphony's version of an F1 car

can any f1 nut tell me what real the car shape most resembles then?

Leechy should have said...

So it resembles PD's version of an F1 car. No F1 car has a wings that shape.

own version of PD

It is not an F1 but a FGT , Formula Gran Turismo , the formula similar to 1 but for GT

i thought they werent allowed to have a real f1 car in the game due to licensing so they made an f1 car that looked and performed the same and just named and painted it polyphony digital. but it is meant to be an f1 car. i think this is also why le mans and monaco have different names.

Yeah , but ure not racing it in an F1 Championship replica are you ?
So , they don't have to stick to modeling the exact performance of any particular F1 , they just have to get it nice and Takeshi'sCastle for the C9 prize .
Therefore it is not a Simulated Formula One Race Model but a Formula Gran Turismo applied to the game's strategy !

It looks a bit like an Indy Car.... i know thats not F1 but it does look slightly similar. Perhaps the GP Masters car as well?

It's as close to F1 design as PD can take it, if anyone has seen the Williams and Ferrari F1 cars the PD F1 looks similar to those cars, sporting some of the same designs such as the front wing and the main body wing, but PD had to add extra things to keep it from being identical, such as having more body wings on either side of the car and the design of the rear wing.

Oh and Sony holds the FIA/F1 liscence, PD just likes to do their own thing.

Absolutely not, it is based on the concept of a Formula One car, hence why it has Bridgestone tires (ignore the fact that they are slicks), 904 hp (which is roughly what they were putting out in 2004) , a redline of 18,000 rpm, and weighs 550 kg. If it were an Indy car, it would look totally different, have a lower rev range, weigh more, and be on Firestone tires. Another hint - the word Formula in the name ;)

And as for the GP Masters idea - again, think about it, the game was developed well before GP Masters had even been thought of.

If people would use the lovely search function, they would find that this has been discussed exactly 188378737 times.

I actually agree with this. I think it looks very Indy, particularly in the suspension and wheels, and not just because they are slicks. The sidepods, wings on the sidepods and (blanked off) radiator exhausts look more F1 than Indy to me (shorter and rounder) but the car most certainly does not look like a copy of a particular F1 or Indy car to me. It's just PD's idea of a fast open wheeled formula racing car, influenced by modern premier formulas. Not influenced by any one specific car (unlike GT3 where there were clear McLaren and Williams influences to the two car shapes) but rather just a generic design.

Oh, and while I agree that the engine behaves more F1 than Indy, that has no effect on what the FGT looks like. However, overall, I would say the FGT is closer to F1 than anything else.

To answer that, i don't watch American Motorsports, without Sky it's hard :indiff: . And yes, i do know that it has Formula in the name, i was just trying to suggest some other suggestions to what it could be. I'm going back down into my hole now.

That's probably true for Monaco which has been named "Côte d'Azur", but "Circuit de la Sarthe" is the true name of the track. Le Mans is the closest town, and the most famous event that takes places on this track (and also the only event as far as I know) is the "Le Mans 24 hours".

The car is definitely inspired by real F1 cars.

Just compare the car in the game and the McLaren which ran the Belgian GP in 2004, and take a close look at all the wings :

I guess PD are allowed to use outdated body designs, loosely.

In a way, yes. The picture that flat-out posted shows that the nose appears to be from 1995-1997; the front and rear wings from 2002-2003 (the depth of the rear wing endplates are shallow, unlike the deep ones of 2004-2005); the engine cover area is from 2002-2003 (currently they are more boxy as per the regulations for additional advertising space); and the main monocoque is from 2004, the year the car is based in.
