PS3 to lose (yet another feature)

*snip*
My primary issue here is less with Sony and more with the industry as a whole. They have gotten so paranoid about piracy that they do not look at how many honest customers will be affected in their attempts to stop it.

*snip*
In this current case, one man found a way through Other OS that would possibly allow piracy, and Sony has punished everyone that legitimately installed Linux.
I agree with this, but I find it hard to believe that this brilliant person, one George Hotz, has apparently not been bothered with legal hassles for what he's managed to do to the iphone, PS3, and perhaps other systems. I never installed Linux on my PS3 because some years ago I was forced to use UNIX for a period of about five years, and I did not enjoy the experience.

I realize that the following is just a joke, but I really wish that something similar (and extremely expensive) would happen to this hacker:

My opinion is that legitimate Linux users that have been affected by Sony's actions should be upset at this hacker, because he is the sole reason that Sony was forced to close the loophole. I hope that he continues to attempt to create his own CFW, and I sincerely hope that he gets all of the peace and quiet that he needs for this project while working within the solitary confines of an 8' x 10' jail cell...without access to a computer.

Well, I updated! And now my week old, 320gb hard drive, is all of a sudden broken. Ps3 doesn't recognize it, neither does my laptop.
Thanks sony!

Hm...On the laptop, right click on my computer and go to manage. See if its showing up at all under drive management. It wouldn't be getting a drive letter as its either corrupted or just not recognized due to the PS3 file system. If its in the PS3, access the recovery menu and see what you can do.

THat can't be true since the old 120GB went from the ps3 straight into the laptop and was recognized without a problem.
The 320gb is corrupted. I tried many things but my laptop, desktop, or ps3 simply don't see the drive.

Doesnt bother me though. I bought a console, not a PC.

I bought a game console, an "open platform", a BD player and a media player. All in one.

Because his actions are imho more legal than Sony's move?

Good luck with THAT train of thought. Please note that if you happen to end up in the same cell with boy wonder georgie, you won't have access to a computer...either.

LOL

You need help. Boy wonder isn't going anywhere. As far as I can tell, he hasn't done anything illegal and he'll be hired by one of these huge companies before he even sees a police station.

  • [*]PS2 Playback capability.
    [*]Super Audio CD Playback capability.
  • A firmware update eliminated the PS3's capability of streaming SACD audio through digital audio output (TOSLINK), limiting us to use HDMI only. My home theater is toshiba TOSLINK only, so I can't listen to SACDs like they were meant to be listened to.
    [*]Removal of two USB ports.
  • Install other OS capability.

These are the ones I remember off the top of my head. Do a few google searches and I'm sure you'll find one or two more.

With the bolded ones, you knew when you bought it it didn't have those features, they weren't taken off you.

There was other stuff taken off aswell... I used to be able logging in my emails just fine. After some (mandatory) fw update, not anymore.
Black background ... not there anymore. :(
Playstation jingle on game start... nope. :(

I just really hate this update craziness from Sony... had I known this beforehand I'd probably never bought a PS3.
Here's hoping for a good cfw, bringing the sleekiness back. 👍

Actually I was also pissed when they removed the Playstation 3 game launch jungle and the also changed the OS boot screen and chime. The point being, who actually owns the console in this relationship!

And the redesign of the PS3 branding. They changed the complete package of the games. Something you usually don't do. Looks like they try to bury every trace of Kutaragi.

Agreed! 👍

My gripe with Sony, is a matter of principle. I brought the PS3 with the realisation that it would perform as advertised. I did not buy it on the understanding that it may lose features over time, and I certainly didn't buy it with the knowledge that my enjoyment of the features I purchased were open for discussion.

Look at it another way. Does Sony have the right to alter an advertised feature, just because it lacks the competence to fix a flaw in its design? I would say yes, but not without recourse. I am perfectly happy for them to alter my system, as long as I am reasonably compensated for the loss.

I also do not buy into the argument that the PS3 is 'just a games console'. The new slimline models ARE just games consoles, but the original launch PS3 was, and still is so much more than that.

My new slimline is not just a game console.
I'm on it right now as well as all my other web browsing needs.
My entire music collection is on it, that is throughly enjoyed.
My entire movie collection is on it, as well as Netflix, all enjoyed.
I have soo many bad *** looking women on my Photo album its ridiculous.
My new slimline is not just a game console. :)

Are you mad at me or mad at Sony? Anyways, if you're mad at me, then sorry that I hate updates... I never update my windows PC, cause I know it will slow it down. Guess what? All those (useless) PS3 updates made my PS3 experience much worse... got a lot more lagging, lot more 'you've been signed out of PSN (for no reason)', even the browser doesn't work properly anymore. So you expect me just to say thank you Sony, come take away even more stuff from my console..?
The only reasonable update afaik was the one that brought text messaging without having to leave your actual game, actually. :dunce:

Can you even find Super Audio CDs anymore? Seriously, I think I've only ever seen them once. The two USB ports you can live without because everything, with a few exceptions, works on Bluetooth now. And you can get splitters. As for PS2 playback, get a PS2. I've heard people say "I want to play PS2 games on the PS3". I'm sure those people said before the PS2 playback was removed "I bought a PS3 to play PS3 games, not PS2 games". I know there's this all or nothing mindset, but you can have components side by side. Owning one doesn't mean you have to toss out another. I still have a turntable for goodness sakes.

indeed yes, true. i traded in my slim PS2 when i got my PS3 (60gb fatty) because i was going to play my old PS2 games on it

then i found that when i put a PS2 game in it, it rebooted to use it. i didn't fancy that in terms of wear and tear

luckily i had an older bulky PS2 still, so i opened that and freshened it up and plonked it back on my gaming unit

back on-topic...

i can see how some would be annoyed by the loss of the OtherOS feature, seeing as the PS3 was sold partially on the strength of that feature

Yeah, Its like Kutaragi's legacy has been wiped off the face of the earth! And to think how much he did for Sony over the last 15 or so years.

I hate the new packaging, its really bland, un-imaginative and crops the box image too much on an already shorter Blu Ray case. They never changed the look of the Playstation or PS2 game boxes when the 'PS One' and 'Two' (slim) came out. Even the PSP boxes have not changed. It shows that they basically deemed the original PS3 a failure and wanted an entire reboot.

I never update my windows PC, cause I know it will slow it down. Guess what? All those (useless) PS3 updates made my PS3 experience much worse...

Same here, I never update windows, the one time I did a while back it crashed my system so bad I couldnt boot and had to reinstall the OS. The PS3 updates have added nothing I want and have changed or taken more away.

Can you even find Super Audio CDs anymore? Seriously, I think I've only ever seen them once.

Actually you can get there everywhere including on Amazon. Real audiophiles with expensive sound systems love them because its as close as your going to get as vinyl in a digital format. Its a niche format but far from dead.

Ouch. I hope you backed up first. Always back up first.

Back up just for a routine update? If I had to do that my update process would take 3hrs.
But, yes, I still had my OLD HDD backed up on a USB drive. Too bad that was before I downloaded the 20+GB of GTTV videos. Those I'll have to download again.

Missing the point completely. It's not about which features are removed, it's not about how to make up or work around the removed features. It's the feature removal itself. It's a legitimate reason to voice our concerns over.

To take it in these terms, if someone breaks into your house and steals your stuff you would put a new lock on the door, wouldn't you? Well that's what Sony is doing. They're protecting their investment. I don't blame them, they have poured over a billion dollars into the the thing.

I can understand you're upset, but honestly I don't think there's that many people who even know how to install Linux on a PS3, or are even interested in doing so. I've had my PS3 for about two years, never once have I said "I wonder if I can put Linux on this thing?". It really doesn't affect those who play God of War III or Metal Gear Solid 4. You really, and I mean REALLY have to be into computers and programming to do that. I'm talking Big Bang Theory into computers.

I think this is more of a case of having not being as satisfying as "wanting" (saw that one on Star Trek ;)). I performed the update without a second thought. When Gran Turismo 5 is released nobody will be missing the Install Other OS one bit.

Your point is? Is "just being a games console" a bad thing?

You know something, I seem to remember a lot of people saying in the beginning when the PS3 first launched they "wanted a game console", and not a multi-media center. Now it seems that the reverse is true.

That's the beauty of the internets.

Actually installing Linux is damn simple these days even on PS3. You just partition the hard drive and download a bootloader from anywhere and stick in a YDL or other distro burned disk. Its like installing windows.

Many computers are also sold with Linux installed, with the likes of Ubuntu its very easy to use so in no way do you need to be into computer and programming to use it. Your thinking of the command line days of Linux.

People just wanted what they were given, which was both a games console and a media centre, nothing less.

Sony is actually making it more of a multi media centre, with all these 'nothing to do with gaming' updates its clear that if someone wants a console totally focused on games Sony don't share the same priorities. I wish they would focus more on the gaming element and not mess around with or take away other non gaming features.

And this is where the main issue comes in. I paid Best Buy, as a retailer for Sony, $600 for this machine. Why is it still Sony's machine to do with as they please? This argument can equally be used to justify removing anything on the hard drive, even though my hard drive is not the original one to come with the machine. Does Seagate have a claim to my hard drive too? Will Sony and Seagate have to battle for dominance of my hard drive, while I try to figure out when buying a physical product really just became a lease agreement?

There were two camps then, and still are now. Some may be taking both sides as the fancy strikes them, or have switched sides, but I have always been in the camp that was very happy to find out it did more than games. When I bought my PS3 the only game I had was the free GT HD, but it was streaming from my PC and playing movies within a week.

I think you'll find - but I can't guarantee this - that you are only loaning the PS3... In the user agreement - I've got a feeling that the PS3 remains the property of Sony.
