You could try and darken the brakes a bit, to make them look like they sit farther into the wheel, giving a dept impression.

Hmmm, When I constructed the wheel, I ran into the problem that if I let the brakes sit too far back that it wouldn't look like they're real. The brakes are already alot darker, and so I'll see what I can do about fixing them. It's late, I'm tired, I'm out.
