thats like saying do you like peanut butter....no! and you saying yes you do....everybody likes peanut butter....

The man has a point. This thread was directed at non-americans for their opinion. Sure you can disagree with whatever is said, but you sure as heck cant simply dismiss it.

I don't hate Americans (most of you rock) an I live in the UK but i am pissed off that Bush is coming you the UK and want us taxpayers to foot the bill for the 14000 Police he needs in London.

Did any of you see that woman that climbed the Palace gates to protest about the War an she put the American flag upside down?

what songbook are you reading?

europe isnt a state....is that what you think?

the individual countries in europe are more than capable of looking after themselves....and if as you think a european army would be banded together, it would be twice the size of the US armed forces....something more akin to the chinese army...

What songbook are you reading? This is a joke right? America has been Europe's mercenary force since 1941. The fact that niether Europe nor America has faced a significant threat of invasion since the cold war ended only enhances Europe's military capability contextually. In real terms it may be weaker than ever.

Of course Britain is a special case, and more like America than the Continent. That must really bother you.

And there is an effort if Europe to consolidate into one state. Various countries with different languages and cultures function outside of the EU political structure, which is bent on creating the United States of Europe. There is no other way for Europe to compete with America. I don't think that's a bad thing. And you are becoming more of a rival to America all the time, and yet still smaller and weaker, which I'm sure is where the latent and blatant malevolence comes from. This is good. Competition is beneficial. And who knows how things will stand in a hundred years?

exactly, and who perpetrates this perception.? who gives america a bad name? who consistantly lives up to our expectations of the arrogant, overweight, undereducated, lazy american?
And who lives up to the stereotype of the European/Asian/whatever tourist when you visit America? Who lives up to the stereotypes of other nationalities when each country responds to world affairs? You do. Everybody who is not American does. So? French history isn't to blame for them being called surrender monkeys? Fat Germans don't come here and wear disgustingly tiny bathing suits? The Japanese didn't get themselves in deep economic trouble by coming to America and trying to buy up every landmark they had taken pictures of with their expensive, over-complicated cameras?
the actions of europe dosent give you this bad name, the actions of asia doesnt give you this bad name, the actions of africa doesnt give you this bad name.....america gives america a bad name.....
But somehow, America gives the rest of the world a bad name, too, since obviously it's only Americans who think that you're not all perfect and above reproach. Since you are all perfect and we just think we're perfect, it's prefectly justified to blame Americans for everything! It's OK, we're big boys and girls, and we've got broad shoulders. We can take it; we've been taking it for years. Just don't expect us to ignore it forever.
look at the state M5 has worked himself into....throwing obsceneties and foul language due to his hatred of other cultures and foriegners...'i hate europe'....how can you hate a land mass? a continent....? is it the people you hate? is it the government? if so which ones....please dont think that the people of Finland are the same as the Czech Replublic or the govts in Portugal are the same as Bosnia....Europe is hugely diverse, the most diverse continent on earth....surely you dont hate every single one of us M5?
But, of course, it's OK when you do it, because you've cornered the market on right. Go back and read what you just wrote. You whitewash 280 million people, with a cultural diversity you could hardly imagine, as "the arrogant, overweight, undereducated, lazy american". But, of course, since by definition, Americans are wrong, it's perfectly OK for you to criticize someone American for doing exactly what you are doing.

After all, America comitted the original sin of being big, powerful, and getting the job done. Imagine that! 230 years ago, we decided we didn't want to be European, and we did something about it! We didn't sit around and whine about injustice while blindly following a thousand-year-old political system; we stood up, threw it off, and invented something better. And Europe has never forgiven us for having the nerve. After all, how worthwhile can we be? *sniff* Nouveau-riche Americans... What kind of culture can one expect from a country that's only 200 years old? I ask you... *sniff*
have you never been to the French alps? or to the beaches of Spain....what about the wide spaces of Ireland....
And this is relevant how? Noone but you is being so idiotically literal as to think we're arguing about the geographic features of the actual continent.
youre not really interested....you prefer to stay in your little fort and despise the rest of the world for disagreeing with your precious Bush.....i cant beileve you folks defend him so blindly and then critisise the Iraqis for doing the same over Hussien.....
And you're perfectly content to sit in your little holier-than-thou closet and despise America without having the slightest understanding of it. You prefer to assume we all do blindly follow Bush rather than consider the possibility that we are capable of thinking for ourselves. Yet you haven't demonstrated that ability, ever, on this forum. If you feel you have done so, kindly direct me to it so I can see the evidence.

not really...the UK has always been very different from the continent, infact we refer to 'europe' as if we were referring to a continent in which we have no part....the eurpean constitution is still a long way off as far a the UK is concerned and were reluctant to be a part because of the international divisons between europe and the US....

we feel that Europe ahe the US are mutually exclusive....and president bLAIR would rather ally himself with the US...which is fine as far as i am concerned....

the UK has a huge influence on the lifestyle of the average american and vice versa and it doesnt trouble me that on a weekday evening i'll settle down with a hollywood movie on my dvd player...the system works for me...

the problem non americans have with america is the international actions of its govt....and to re-itterate....not with the average american joe....

hold on pal...

you think that i alone have invented this internationally recognisable stereotype? what americans cannot understand is what outsiders actually think of them...

you believe that we look on you as modest, intellegent, caring and incredibly handsome and courteous nation....

okay, if thats what you believe then its no wonder you have such a hard time accepting what every one who is not american on this forum is telling you...

thats not how we look at you....its not a personal belief but it is the common belief...

the guy who started this forum is genuinely shocked that people here may have a problem with the way you are percieved by the rest of the world.....please explain, neon duke, why this poor man feels this way because i am at loss as to how to explain it...

You just don't understand, do you? You want to get away with doing to Americans exactly what you complain about us doing to the rest of the world.

No, I don't think that you personally invented the stereotypical American. But you do not ever seem to question the validity of that stereotype. You accept it at face value - yet you got offended when stereotypes were applied to you.

You need to understand that things like that work both ways. Once you accept that, you'll understand that I don't have a hard time accepting what people say about America. But that doesn't in any way mean I have to agree with it.

im just curious what bad stereotypes have you guys got on australia...if any

I don't have any bad stereotypes of Australians. But check out a Monty Python sketch about Australian table wines, if you want a European take on the subject.

.

neon, look...i have stated in my posts over and over that i have no problem with americans....

the point i am trying to get accross is that people have a certian negative perception....i personally dont hold that belief and i never claimed to....this is the answer to the original topic....is that okay?

Nope, don't hate you at all.

In fact i have to say as a race I'm rather fond of you all. You have your faults but by and large you're all rather sweet and do try and do the right thing.

If i had a critism of the American people it's that you do seem to be a touch naive.

Now if everybody would just put down the handbags?

None here. The only people that I have a problem with is the French, but not the france french the Quebec french who think that there better then the anglo`s. Which is all of them of course.

That was kind of an intentional oversight. I considered listing all the countries involved but opted to only mention the 2 that contributed the largest amount of soldiers. I apoligize and meant no disrespect to the great country of Australia.

One, I live no-where near there and two, I'm sure they couldn't care less what people like you thought of them. ( please note: I didn't say what Americans thought of them, just idiots like yourself. You could be from Europe, and Europeans wouldn't like your attitude).

Can I be invited to your thirteenth birthday party?

Please?

No, really, ol' Jay, you rule. Don't leave these forums forever, we need people like you. You and Al Sharpton. 👍

thats good i want to hear more
alot of people actually think australia is a desert and we all live in the outback with kangaroos, koalas etc
i live in a city, i never see koalas unless im in a zoo, and maybe a kangaroo if im driving interstate, but the 99 percent of aussies live in citys just like everyone else
i am nothing like the stereotypes tv tries to put on us. (ive never had shrimp on the barbie)

There are Japanese restaurants where that is allowed, but I doubt any of them is named Barbie.

You have the nerve to compare Bush to Hussien?

i didnt compare anyone with anyone else...

i was pointing out the hypocrisy of some who blindly follow thier leader no matter what crimes they commit or political blunders they make or scandals they immerse themselves in...

as soon as an outsider critisises that, they jump in on his defence yet stab him in the back when no one is looking....

these same people say that 'we freed iraq of an evil tyrant, why arent the iraqis grateful for that?'

do you see what i am getting at?

they are defending thier leader, as human nature dictates, regardless of any crimes they may have committed....

thats why iraqis are not grateful to the US for thier help...its not personal...its a situation where any county that did the same as the US did may be viewed in the same light by the Iraqis

i woudlnt compare your leader with that of Iraq...

and Talentless....i have a sneaking suspicion that 'barbie' is a shortened version of barbeque....it doesnt refer to a plastic doll...

its called a 'political affront'...there is no dignity in letting a tyrant get into power then having to rely on a much more powerful nation to bail them out....

deep down, i believe they are grateful and i believe that the americans know this too....but they are slightly embarrased because they were unable to throw off the shackles themselves....

its like a child that gets himself into a sticky situation and has to resort to getting an adult to help him out....then he stick out his tongue and runs off....of course, the adult smiles and knows the kid is grateful really...

okay, its a crappy lightweight analogy, butcan anyone else see my point?

I wanted to point out to Turbosmoke that Doug (M5Power) likes to use sarcasm.

Because I hate Paris, and because you took a joke the wrong way, I'm a xenophobe?

Maybe, instead of me being a xenophobe, you're just an idiot. Paris does suck. I've spent loads of time in Europe, and it's extremely unappealing to me. Two Europeans agreed with me in that thread. Maybe they're anti-European too. I date a British girl, I drive a German car, and I'm going on vacation to London next month. My favourite small Internet forum is run by a Scottish person, and my best IM buddy is from Holland.

Take your head out of your ass and quit making comments for which you have no evidence.

But, Doug, it's always OK to do that, as long as you're making comments about Americans. Whatever you say about them, it can't possibly be worse than what they already are! So "evidence" is irrelevant.

Unless of course that evidence happens to be that you lived here for a few months during the Reagan presidency - that qualifies you as an expert and allows you to say whatever you wish about America.
