You have to be pretty arrogant to dismiss hardparking just because it doesn't fit your idea of what a car should be like. Who cares? People obviously enjoy their cars regardless of how useable they are. Are they trying to claim their car will beat all on a track? No, they're just using parts they think are nice in their own way.

You could say that about any kind of car modification though - which would make this thread redundant.

For me, a perfectly decent Audi S4 with stupid looking wheel/tyre combo and a highly stylised 'striped' interior is just as questionable as a cheep, poorly fitted front air dam on a otherwise stock looking 1.1L Peugeot 205 XL.

Never underestimate Arabs when it comes to modifying odd cars.. that thing can probably run neck to neck with Murcielago.. despite having aerodynamics of Volvo.

Does it mean I should somehow hold back that I find it utterly revolting? I mean, I'm sure the dude likes it. Why should it be any different for the Audi? If I think he's what he's done to it is utterly retarded, why exactly can't I dismiss it again?
 
RE: that big Patrol/whatever it is - Gonna bet that's a competition sand machine: There's no way to fit a Hood, or even Headlights, on the thing , because of all the equipment. Reminds me of if they'd allowed turbo engines in the early days of Mud Racing.

I'm thinking more along the lines that 95% of the time that the term "hardparker" is mentioned on this forum, there's very little wrong with the car in question save for my personal dislike of the drop and stretch, and people just appear utterly stuck-up about someone's choice of modification.

There's a difference between something being "not to all tastes" and something being genuinely revolting. The Audi in question comes under the first classification, IMO. Using track parts on a car that won't be tracked and is giving out no illusion of being a track car certainly isn't grounds for mindless smug criticism, as far as I'm concerned. I reiterate that there are several people on this forum who could serve to be a lot less arrogant.

And re: the 205, I'm guessing from the picture that it's the promo photo for a bodywork company rather than someone's personal car. Again, certainly not to my taste but it's probably not driving around out there like that. Knowing bodykit companies, that particular car has probably had numerous changes for the sole purpose of showing what their kits look like on the car.

And regardless, I'd hazard that the Audi has been modified to a higher quality than the average polycarbonate bodykit on a cheapo Euro-hatch.

With which I wholeheartedly agree this time, as I think it is quite stupid looking, and hence why I decided to post the pictures in here instead, seeing how it is questionnable, in my opinion to take an Audi S4, take off the wonderful original suspension and drop it on airbags instead... and then go on and add wheels that don't even fit properly without being cambered and shod with tires that are stretched to an inch of their life.

You can't please everyone.

Those trucks are built to serious sand dune runs they do in the middle east. They get bogged down in sand that bad they always want more power to get through it fast.

Just to clarify my opinion: I think it's questionable thanks to the stretch, ridiculous drop etc. What I don't agree with is the snobbish attitude that arises from the term "hardparker" from those who apparently consider themselves better people just because they don't like a certain type of modification.

Any modifications to a car done purely for looks or image are questionable, because it all comes down to personal taste. It doesn't matter how much money or time someone has thrown at a project, or whether the modifications are flavour-of-the-month or not, they are still just as questionable.

Using track parts on a car that will never turn a wheel on a circuit is ever bit as questionable and pointless as a huge rear wing on a FWD hatch that will never drive above 70mph.

It all comes down to personal taste. Their like of something means just as much (and just as little) as my dislike of it. They think A looks good and I prefer B. We both hate C. We can discuss it but it's not like in the grand scheme of things it means any more than our opinions, and it shouldn't be taken as anything more than that.

Agreed 100%. It should be abundantly clear by now that I despise poseurs. And posing is worse than just having terrible taste.

The thing is, a hideous body kit with titanic bling wheels and garish paint isn't FAKING anything. It's not pretending to be anything it isn't. It may be tasteless, but that's just a matter of personal preference. A car modified like that is just the equivalent of an expensive pimp suit - not my style and I'd rather not see it, but if you think it looks good, rock it.

But putting a ton of expensive race parts on a car and making it sort of look like a race car, then crippling its performance with massive drop and massive stretch, is just silly.

For less than the same time, money, and effort, you could build a real racecar and go racing, instead of pretending to own a racecar but having to baby it over every manhole cover and worry about every bug splat and microscopic stone chip.

For the cost of that ridiculous S4, I could buy, build, and spend a season running a Spec-E30 racecar. And then I would have actually done it instead of just pretending!

I'd rather be a backmarker on an actual racetrack than be an award-winning wannabe in a parking lot.

Some people buy Ferraris to put in their living rooms, they don't even get driven. You probably dislike those people too, but at the end of the day they're doing what they want with their money in exactly the same way as someone who buys fancy bits just to take the car to shows.

I wonder how many people here have trainers and never go running. Same principle. But I bet you don't look at people wearing flash trainers and think "what a plonker, using those trainers just to walk along the street instead of running in them".

I don't disagree that it's about personal taste but effectively calling them idiots for buying the parts they like and using them in their own way is just snobbish and arrogant, there's no two ways about it.

You seem to have missed the point of this whole thread. This thread is obviously not for you. We post pictures of "questionable modifications", and then comment on said modifications. If you still don't see what's questionable about that Audi (Duke and many others have said enough on the matter), then you should probably just back away quietly, in my opinion. It's just about one of the most questionable vehicles posted in months. Again, in my opinion.:sly:

My point is that people get ridiculously high and mighty over this hardparking thing as if the people who do it are somehow lower forms of life.

I'm not debating that the Audi is questionable.

But you seem to be missing the point that the whole theme for this thread is to act high and mighty over the lower forms of life who build the vehicles that populate it.
 
I disagree. It's to take the mickey and show pictures of badly modified cars. Being snobbish and assuming that you're better than everyone is not the idea. It's the line between joking around and just being a knob.

There's a fine line between the two.

Using your terminology as an example, "take the mickey" would imply you feel your choice(s) are superior. Saying any modification is questionable/ugly/whatever is inherently thinking your choice(s) are superior.

This thread is here, so people can post these questionable vehicles, and have a place to rant about how said modifications make us feel.

Nothing out of line about any of it.
