I can't see the photoshop personally, but if it is shopped, then why would they add a car they have no rights to? Unless, of course, they do have rights some how.

Also interesting to note, it that the helmet in the picture appears to be similar to Timo Glock's. We know he's a GT fan and was even in a video talking to Kaz posted a while back.

It's rather confusing as you'd imagine PD/Sony would be promoting such features if they had somehow acquired them. I guess we'll find out in just over a month.

In no special order:

The noise (lack off) in the darker parts of the car does not match the average noise-level of the picture.

The right part under the rear wing of the car has been brush-painted by... someone in a hurry.

There are a few angular shapes around the cheek of KY.


Beside, I believe this is an actual real-world picture of the Virgin; not only does the driver sit in the car but it seems to me that he is steering the wheel and looking at the apex. Kind of strange in the middle of the garage!

Wouldn’t PD have at least put a digital asset of the car if it was indeed in the game?

Maybe they don't need to promote them. Everybody would buy GT5 if it didn't have any formula 1 cars anyway, so by incuding them it would just be a massive surprise? Who knows.

It's all speculation what I'm about to say but the exclusive F1 licence Codemasters have obtained may also allow them to sub-licence to PD perhaps at a certain price or under certain conditions ( maybe not all cars ).
Since the F1 2010 game is about to be replaced next year by F1 2011 and GT5 having a far longer lifespan and not directly competing by genre ( meaning one focussing on one series only, the other possibly having this serie as only one element and not covering each single aspect ) they may have permission to include some current ( the Virgin car is current ) cars as next years, and the years following, Codemasters iterations makes the current cars obsolete for the hardcore F1 follower wanting to race the then current season perhaps.

Maybe it's somewhat similar to the exclusive licence EA struck with Porsche giving them the option to sublet or sell it to other developers.
If so, and again a rather strong assumption with no evidence to support it, they might have agreed to an understanding not to shout about it as the F1 2010 game is about to be released and not steal its thunder.
And maybe PD can only use some of this years cars over the whole lifespan of GT5 making the next ( and this years ) Codemasters F1 games relevant to those who only wish to play an F1 game or those who will buy both games ( as the demographic for both games albeit different in purpose are overlapping ).

Yes, probably!
Anyway, now we know that the X1 has got a small displacement, high pressure turbocharged engine. I wonder if it's reminescent of the '80s turbo F1 era (+ modern improvements). Could it be an unregulated, prototype 1.6 liter 4 cylinder turbo as expected by new 2013 F1 regulations?

That is official PD material, obviously very well picked from many photos, so that is almost a 99% confirmation regarding some surprises that still awaits in the pipe

You might just be onto something there with the sub-licensing, it may just be possible and I think it's been overlooked. Also, the official game offers a different experience of the overall lifestyle of a driver in depth, so CM may have less to lose by simply allowing PD to use (some of) the cars only as it's not a direct competitor in some sense for the hardcore fans.

Also, regarding an agreement not to steal thunder, I think T10 weren't allowed to show Porsches in the the pre-release official shots of FM3, so that makes sense.

I'll agree this must be a clear hint as these pictures are carefully chosen and every detail we're not supposed to see has been blurred.
When the car in question were to be a Red Bull F1 car, which would seem more logical, this whole discussion perhaps wouldn't even be started.
They carefully chose another manufacturer apart from Ferrari and Red Bull Racing which were logical to be included in one form or other, I think they deliberately chose a Virgin car because this is their first season, and thus a current season F1 car, and maybe because it's a first for PD to include multiple licenced F1 cars in a GT-game.......

I really hope there are more than just Ferrarir in the game right? I was really looking forward to the F1 part of this game and expecting a lot more F1 cars. Plus i'm holding off on buying F1 2010 by codemasters for this reason too.

When you put it like that, and going back to look at it in full, it's hard not to agree with you. I wonder then if they were trying to hide what was really on the screen. Presumably the X1 since Kaz has himself and Newey stood in front of it?

If you look carefully to the photo, you can see that the chassis is almost perfectly straight, the only thing that is in a direction is the driver's helmet, so why not rotate it to fool us? The sponsors wouldn't need to be flipped as they are straight. Amar212 told us before PD are taking everything in detail.

Look at the V in "Virgin" the wing is missing to the left of it and we see the garage.

On this point it isn't strange at all. Drivers often sit in the car whilst in the garage, and depending on the track have to turn full lock to get out... but it's so obvious (to me now anyway) that it's a photoshop that it doesn't really matter what it is or isn't, but the why. They could have used the Ferrari F1, or a Polyphony Digital F1 for example. Why Virgin? It must be they licensed it. Why photoshop, it must be because they wanted to hide what was really there.

Look at the T bar's height. It's at a different angle, therefore the whole picture is at a different angle. And why go to the effort of rotating the driver's helmet? It makes no sense to do so.

Also, that isn't Di Grassi's helmet behind Newey and Kaz, it's Glock's.

Flags on buildings and landscape are one thing, 99% of people wouldn't even think of needing to ask if you needed a separate licence for a small amount of flags strewn about when you already have a licence for the city itself.

Anyway, you may be right with the X1, that they may not have noticed at first and then needed to cover it up before posting it online.

There's a difference between flags, and car licenses. They know only too well they can't just put in a F1 car without the license so the choice must have been symbolic... or [EDIT] perhaps they were in such a rush to find an image they just picked one that looked proportionally right and to hell with the consequences?
