The internet is a very funny place.

This product has been around for a long time - more than 5 years, because I saw a demonstration of it around 1998 or 9. Yet suddenly it's making the rounds of message boards as if it was brand new. It just suddenly reached that critical mass, and it's hit the exponential part of the exposure curve.

Odd.
Yep, it was first shown I think in 1998. I think the main reason not many people know or rather knew about it was that even though it's the safest saw and all that, it was the most expensive as well. It's availability I believe was also rather limited. It's a pity that when something like this does come out, it's almost gaurenteed that it will cost more. Also you'd think it would be in the interests of the insurance comapnies ect to make sure thier clients get one. Saves them having to pay thoes huge sums of money when an accident does happen.

Not to sound cold hearted or anything, but that depends entirely on the price of the saw, the frequency of saw related accidents, and the cost of health care/legal battles.

Now, if I were a business owner that used a table saw I'd think hard about this. It would be very damaging to business if someone had an accident. For the morale of the employees, the cost of insurance, and the personal piece of mind, I think it would be tempting even at a high price.

But there has to be a price. You can't just say "fingers are priceless" and be done with it.

No I agree with that, from a business perspective, everything must have a cost. However the costs paid out to people that have lost fingers, or even the use of thier hand completely is very high. Much higher than it would cost to supply a workshop with a few of these saws, perhaps make up the difference in the premium the sawstop costs. At least I'd estimate it to be anyway. These saws cost a couple of grand each, they arn't something only the super rich can buy, they're just a lot more than regular bench saws.
