I don't get it... some of the previous seasonal challenges were no harder to gold than some of the License Tests. I've STILL got a few I haven't golded yet. Should I complain that PD made the tests too hard, too...?
There is a complete difference between TUNING your way to a podium and UPGRADING your way to a podium. The previous seasonals were amongst the only challenges in the game where you couldn't simply swamp your opponents with horsepower, where getting the right TUNE made the difference. But, for the casual gamer, there is an excellent tuner forum here, where many of the solutions to beating the seasonals were posted.
But for ONCE, it showed those playing the game casually just how MUCH their times could improve simply by getting the setup right. You would think they would take some pleasure in this, but apparently no. I guess making the challenges harder simply interfered with their time spent gifting and duplicating back to themselves
But, all this doesn't mean that PD don't share some actual blame. Firstly, for making the overall game so DUMB that it can't recognize that you have entered an event with a car two or three times as powerful as the 'typical opponents', and change those opponents accordingly. Jeez! How hard would THAT have been to implement? Laugh all you like about Shift's handling, but at least if you upgraded your car, the AI got a bit faster as a response to it, and cars were sectioned off into at least four tiers (five online) that couldn't race each other. I don't know about you, but watching a Veyron race a Vitz isn't my idea of racing!
And secondly, whatever happened to being able to downtune your cars? IRL, you can take an upgrade OFF if you want to enter a spec race, not have to buy another copy of the car altogether. Until you RM a car, ALL upgrades should be removable. You can do it for SOME upgrades (select the tranny, things like that) but few of them actually downtune your car. IRL, if you took out too much weight for a spec series, you can add ballast. Not GT5. Once it is gone, you have to buy another car! That's retarded!
Finally (well, it isn't, but it's the last idiotic feature I'll mention in THIS post!!), there's no way to store and recall a tune, or set of upgrades once bought. Move around between A-Spec, B-Spec, seasonal events and online, you often need quite different sets of upgrades and tunes on any specific car. Why we have no ability to store these is once again, retarded! This is the 21'st century, and I have to WRITE DOWN on paper what tune I use for each car on each track for each event?
All of these details missing is laziness in the extreme. it's not like GT5 is PD's first trip out the door. These issues MUST have come up in the past. Why were they given so little attention. Graphics are nice and all that, but it's little details like these that make the difference between a great GAME and a poor one. That PD have to vacillate between different approaches for seasonal events simply to mitigate the problems their inattention have precipitated is only the end result of their extreme laziness in coding this game.
Personally, I'm for going back to the original seasonal event approach. I have appreciated being set limits as tight as some of the License and Special Events, but in those, the car for the event was provided. You didn't have to go out and buy it every time, or duplicate an existing car because you already upgraded past the specifications and can't detune. Perhaps, if PD can't address all the above issues, they could at least provide a blank car for each event that you can tune and upgrade yourself, but gets used ONLY in that event (doesn't appear in your garage)?
After blunder after blunder in the gameplay of what COULD have been an excellent game, I am starting, against all my expectations, to look forward to Shift 2 Unleashed. If they improve the physics to anything even CLOSE to GT5's, it is going to be a much better GAME. Simply because they didn't sit on their backsides during development, and leave out obvious gameplay elements...
GT5 is a year still away from completion, at the rate we are going.
