Here are my unpopular opinions:
  • Anyone who thinks that all music of a particular type sucks is an idiot.
  • Any band founded in the last 10 years, by definition, is NOT the greatest band ever. This doesn't mean what you think it means. I'm not referring to bands founded since 1994. It's a sliding scale. I'm referring to bands founded within the last 10 years of today's date, no matter when you read this message.
  • Every word Klostrophobic says about music is a pearl of wisdom cast before swine.
  • The Rolling Stones haven't produced an album worth the tape it's recorded on since 1974 (this was a less popular opinion 10 years ago, but still).
  • Pink Floyd haven't produced an album worth the tape it's recorded on since 1980. The Wall barely escapes this - but just BARELY. It's not even worth owning since you'll hear more than enough of it on the radio anyway.
  • NuMetal - for the most part - sucks. I have yet to figure out exactly what defines "emo", since as far as I'm concerned, if any type of music doesn't stir your emotions then there's no freaking point in listening to it.
  • Bruce Springsteen sucks, totally and completely (this was also a less-popular opinion 10 years ago).
  • Billy Joel is the worst singer/songwriter/musician to ever make such an obscene amount of money.
  • No Doubt and Gwen Stefani outlived any popularity they deserved within 10 days of the release of their first single. Yet she remains a role model and powerful economic force among the 11-15 year old crowd to this day. This defies any shred of logic.
  • Country Music is good. 97% percent of the Nashville/Memphis/Branson product you will hear today is not Country Music. It's Top 40 Pop with a coat of John Deere green and yellow paint sprayed on it and wearing a pair of $700 cowboy boots.
  • Bjork sucks and is ugly.

The Beatles are/were the greatest band to ever assemble. It is impossible to overrate them.

Sammy Hagar blows. Van Halen is Dave, Ed, Mike, and Alex

Nickleback is/are the anti-christ.

The lead singer from The Cardigans has a sexy voice.

Metallica has sucked since 1991.

The Wall is bad, mmkay?

Punk isn't bad at all, as long as you know which bands to and not to listen to.

All emo music isn't garbage. Case in point -- At The Drive-In, Thursday, Coheed and Cambria, Get Up Kids, Hot Water Music, etc.

Radiohead is the greatest band around today.

Audioslave is good, Rage Against The Machine is better.

The Beatles are not overrated.

Pop/Country (Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney) is total trash.

Rap is fine, as long as you know what to listen to (Jurassic 5, Pharcyde, The Roots...)

Tupac is dead, and he's going to stay dead, no complaints from me.

Tool isn't underrated, or overrated.

I like AFI, and I'll admit that they're nothing spectacular, but they're not terrible either.

I hate Metallica.

Fred Durst is one of the worst things that has ever happened to music.

Nickelback, and whatever other "hard rock" bands that are on the radio today is some of the worst music that I have ever listened to.

neon_duke and Klos are right when they say that no single genre of music completely sucks.

More to come as I can think of them.

Where to begin?

I only like Metallica's hit songs; I've never been imprsessed with the non-hit songs. I can't listen to a whole album in one sitting, either. But their hit songs are damn good ones.

I haven't enjoyed listening to a current rap song on the radio for 10 years now. (And it's not "Old School" until it's at least 10-15 years old.)

I'm manly enough to admit I like some songs by The Cure (all at least 15 years old, though). The same goes for Depeche Mode, but cut it to 10 years.

Miles Davis and John Coltrane are still underrated, no matter how much you hate jazz music.

I don't fully understand all the divisions of electronic music, yet I know what I like and don't like, so I don't care.

"Freestyle" music is 99% repetitve, trite, and barely uses words over 7 letters in the songs. It's disposable dance music.

I'm hearing a lot more old Electrofunk music again, which is a good thing.

Dvorak's New World Symphony is amazing.

I'm 30, and starting to appreciate certain country music songs.

The Beastie Boys are still great, but waiting six years for a 42-minute album seems a disappointment. Nothing new or memorable in "To the 5 Boroughs", honestly.

Yes, I listen to Enya.

Los Lobos are a damn fine example of music sung in a language other than English.

I can't listen to Nine Inch Nails anymore; I'm still in love with my wife. Even if I wasn't, I wouldn't want you to feel sorry for me.

I never could get into Rage Against the Machine, Everlast/House of Pain, or Cypress Hill. (Wow, it took me 10 years to admit that.) The first one's not for a lack of trying, but the other two just seem to do what their managers tell them to sing.

Sade has the loveliest popular-music singing voice I've ever heard. She could brainwash me with Republican-propaganda, and I'd believe it. 'Nuff said.

Aerosmith and the Red Hot Chili Peppers could disappear entirely and I wouldn't mind. Hopefully, they will just retire for good, so nobody will eulogize them for the rest of my life.

The Doors are still great fun to listen to. So is Jimi Hendrix. And Parliament Funkadelic. And Curtis Mayfield. And Credence Clearwater Revival.

Why do I like Sublime? It's everything I dislike about people, yet it...works...somehow...someway.

I still can't believe what happened to A Tribe Called Quest. They just...fell...off, and did exactly what they didn't want to become.

I'm starting to enjoy less and less of the new stuff, more of the older stuff (10-50 years old) in the past 5 years.

Mix tapes and CD's of a mix of songs are disposable. No cohesion, that's what.

Don't buy the Greatest Hits compliation of anyone until you've listened to all their albums first.

There is no greatest band, album, or song of all time.

A couple of the things Neon_Duke mentioned I agree with. And I hope he doesn't mind me copy/pasting them. The first one I mention a lot, and I agree with it strongly. The other is also true.

--Anyone who thinks that all music of a particular type sucks is an idiot.

One thing Neon. Why did you mention that "Anyone who thinks that all music of a particular type sucks is an idiot." when you said "Nu Metal, for the most part, sucks." I mean, I don't like Nu Metal either, I think it's a bad name for Metal. But I still don't know why you put those in there...

Oh boy, this thread rocks.

- Fred Durst sucks.
- AFI is annoying.
- Taking back Sunday, Alkline Trio, New Found Glory, and Blink 182 are all a cliche.
- Metallica's worst album to date is Load. Followed by everything else after the Black album.
- The "new" country sucks. And is white trashy.
- 50 Cent/G-Unit, Ja Rule, Jay-Z, and Eminem all suck horribly.
- Slipknot are so-so. Same deal with Hatebreed.
- The Warped tour is the worst concert ever to come out since the Lilith Fair.
- And Paris Hilton sucks at making music, because she is an overpaid, spoiled slut.
- I hope every pop star chokes on their dinner tonight.
- Nirvana was way to overrated.
- Goth music sucks.

Well, Thats the bad. On with the good.

- Tool, APC, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden all kickass.

- Not all rap is bad. I prefer old-school. We're talking earlier C-Bo, NWA, Public Enemy, etc.

- H.I.M wins most creative genre (Love Metal.) They also kick ass too.

- Joe Satriaini (sp?) is an awesome guitarist.

More to come...

Lenny kravitz is pretty cool. The Vines and the Strokes and the Hives Rule. The white Stripes Are okay. jet is one of the best new bands ever. Hatebreed is the best heavy metal screaming band. New Found Glory, The Offspring, Green Day, and Blink-182 RULE.
Bad Religion is the best Punk band ever. All rap still blows. Amercana and Ixnay On the hombre are two of the best albums ever in rock. Snow patrol is pretty cool. Satan Worshipping is WAY overrated...... AFI is the worst band EVER.
Rage Against The Machine and A perfect Circle Rules. Tool is overrated..

What about this post is unpopular? You basically like most things that are trendy.

Offspring, Green Day, and Blink-182 rule???

About a bazillion people would agree with you.

Not me though I think they all suck.

Tool, APC, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden all kickass.

I agree with you but so do most people.

Here are my unpopular opinions:
I agree with all of these assessments, except for these two:

  • Any band founded in the last 10 years, by definition, is NOT the greatest band ever. This doesn't mean what you think it means. I'm not referring to bands founded since 1994. It's a sliding scale. I'm referring to bands founded within the last 10 years of today's date, no matter when you read this message.
  • Every word Klostrophobic says about music is a pearl of wisdom cast before swine.

Why does a band have to be around more than 10 years to become the greatest band ever? Let's just assume Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever. They would have been the greatest band ever in 1978 (ten years after they formed), as well. Led Zeppelin released all of their albums of worth from 1969 to 1975. If they are indeed the greatest band ever, then they surely were in 1975 after they released their last good album.

Note: I just used Zeppelin, as an example because I'd bet that most people would have them or the Beatles pegged as the greatest band ever. Obviously they are wrong, because Tesla are the greatest band to ever walk on this planet.

And I assume you wet your pants laughing as you typed out that comment about me.

  • Jaco Pastorius is underrated, as are Weather Report.
  • Guns 'n' Roses are completely awful. I don't know if it is the dying feline voice of Axl Rose, or the cheesy instrumentation, but I can't listen to a note without convulsing.
  • Meat Puppets II is the greatest punk album ever recorded. If you disagree, you clearly haven't heard this album.

I think that the Beatles are overrated, although some of the riffs they have are pretty catchy (Here Comes the Sun).

I also think *gulp* Jimi Hendrix is a bit overrated. I mean yeah, he was a great guitarist but not really "THE BEST THERE EVER WAS AND WILL BE" that everyone puts him up to be.

Well, because the music has to stand the test of time, in influence and quality and age. There is plenty of great music being made today... and it will still be great when it fades further into obscurity. But to be the greatest (and yes, there are many "greatest" bands) it must still sound fresh and good even 10 years later. And there are obviously hundreds of insanely popular bands that are being proclaimed "the greatest" right now,m that will be forgotten in the cutout bin in less than 10 years.
Note: I just used Zeppelin, as an example because I'd bet that most people would have them or the Beatles pegged as the greatest band ever. Obviously they are wrong, because Tesla are the greatest band to ever walk on this planet.
Not only are Tesla the greatest band ever to walk the planet, but their acoustic cover of The Five Man Electrical Band's hippy classic "Signs" is the greatest piece of music ever recorded.
And I assume you wet your pants laughing as you typed out that comment about me.
No, indeed not. I was and am quite serious. Your next quote proves me right:

A few G'N'R songs are worth their time. But do this: get any Ethel Merman record and listen to it. Then listen to "Paradise City". Now you know who Axl's mother is.

And Meat Puppets fan that I am, I have to peg The Dead Kennedys' In God We Trust Inc. as the best punk album of all time. Every "punk" band formed after 1990 should be tithing 10% of their royalties to Jello Biafra, Henry Rollins, and that guy from Suicidal Tendencies, among others.

I like listening to Nickleback.

I think I like Tool and APC a bit too much and I'm turning into a bit of a fanboy, thinking their word is god. With that said, I think some of their songs where they bash Christ isn't exactly my style. I agree with the message, but not the delivery.

  • I like Ozzy as a vocalist. 👍 I bet you're all still recovering from that one...
  • The only decent thing I can find in GnR is Slash on the guitar.
  • Killswitch Engage are ordinary.
  • Nile suck. Who the hell said they were good?!
  • I still don't know what everyone sees in Nirvana. They were a decent grunge band and all, but they were way overrated.
  • The Darkness could die tomorrow and I wouldn't care. 👍

All emo music isn't garbage. Case in point -- At The Drive-In, Thursday, Coheed and Cambria, Get Up Kids, Hot Water Music, etc.

At the drive in are emo? I mean there nothing like thursday, or funeral for a friend. I just called it music derived from drug abuse, although allot of music could fall under that genre.

Yeah, ATDI are classified as emo. The common misconception is that all emo music is just punk where they scream and whine about girls, definitely not the case.

Is that the same for Coheed and Cambria? I've read positive reviews of their stuff and they've done two concept albums.

They're no At The Drive-In, but the sound is similar, they're just not as out there as ATDI was. Definitely not one of those cliche', whiny emo bands.

Check out "Delirium Trigger" or "Sweet", they're my two favorite Coheed songs.

Chingy, 50 cent, Good Charlotte, Blink 182, the white stripes, No doubt, pink, Bjork, billy joel, lil john, the backstreet boys, nsync, and hanson could all be involved in a 80 mile perhour pileup between 3 gas tankers, an ammo truck and their tour buses and I probably wouldn't care.

:bowdown:Van Halen :bowdown:Tesla  Judas Priest.

I'd hope that Jack and Meg got out before the impact, but other than that, I'm with ya.

lol. haha I also think that while linkin park is pretty good in my opinion, they are a little overrated.

I'm just wondering why you bothered posting these. I mean I already did.

Because those were your opinions, not mine. :dopey: No different to the million redundant opinions on punk so far I guess...

Yes, but they were exactly the same as mine. So what was the point?

Final Fantasy Music is Great!

Nirvana is good

Linkin park are overplayed on radio and annoying

rap music is boring o_O

techno is boring

The strokes are good!

Who the hell said Nile sucked? Nile are damn good. They have one crap album: "Amongst the Catacombs of the Nephren-Ka", IMO. Alot of people say this is their best, but it has too much egyptian crap for my liking.

I'ver heard that float on song a few times, and we agree, Modest Mouse is good.

neon_duke
No, indeed not. I was and am quite serious. Your next quote proves me right:

Wow, thanks. I'm quite flattered that you'd say that. Especially since I find that you have the best taste in music of anyone here. Hell, of anyone I've ever known.

  • Joy Division are amazing, and it's a pity that they only released two absolutely stunning albums before Ian Curtis killed himself. I have no idea what genre you could jam them into, and aside from Interpol, I haven't heard a band that sounded anything like them.
  • New Order, which formed from the remains of Joy Division, is an excellent band. I find it amazing how different their sound is from Joy Division.
  • I love Ozric Tentacles, and I don't know why I had never heard of them until about a year ago. They should be more popular, and they have a superb name.

I've never heard of Ozric Tentacles... do they sound like anybody else at all? You're right, it's a great name.

I have some New Order on vinyl, and of course I came of age during that whole era of music, but I really ought to get Substance on CD. And I don't own any Joy Division at all - a situation I'll have to correct.

Here's another unpopular opinion: Tears For Fears are an excellent pop band, especially The Hurting and their older stuff.
