SPEED channel is now Fox Sports 1

General consensus would probably say that Speed Channel being gone is a good thing- especially if you think something better could have been offered, but it was better than nothing. My stance has sort of shifted since thinking about Foolkiller's comments. Speed Channel was still better than nothing in regards to covering and focusing on motorsports. Many of us can agree to that even if you weren't too fond of more NASCAR coverage than most other series.

The final live televised Grand-Am race ever was this past weekend. That is... unless you get FOX Sports 2 to see the 2013 Grand-Am season finale at Lime Rock later this month. FS2 is supposed to air that event live. Outside of Grand-Am, I am a bit curious to see how Petit Le Mans will be covered. That is, if it will be on FS1 or FS2.

This is completely off-topic... yesterday, it was CBS Sports Network that aired coverage of the FIA World Touring Car Championship races at Sonoma Raceway. It made me think about when SPEED Channel would air the WTCC action once NASCAR was done for the season. I think Bob Varsha or somebody said it best during the final installment of Wind Tunnel With Dave Despain- (indirect quote) "racing will live on, but how it is covered will not." Or something like that. Next week on Tuesday will be one month since Speed Channel- for all intents and purposes went from a motorsports TV network to an almost worthless blog, while what used to be SPEED Channel is now an ESPN contender. Got to love today's television world...

Calling Fox1 a contender might be a stretch. The highest rated show on FS1 the week of Aug 26-Sept 2 was a UFC fight that drew a .5 rating,824k HH.That rating would be 40th on ESPN for that week behind poker.ESPN 2's top show had a 1.1 share with 1,886 hh and ESPNU's best was a .5-922k.

FWIW FS1 is beating NBCSN slightly and FS2's top rated show would rank 83rd on ESPN2 (the 3am Wed. NASCAR Now).

I for one hate ESPN and all they stand for but I seem to be in the minority.Unless RPM tonight is brought back from the dead I doubt we will have a motorsports news show anytime soon. The closest thing to it now is the Racing Insiders on MAVTV but they only focus on sportscars and rally and the production is horrible.

Curious moment during "The Jones and Mosley Show" today... They were showing highlights of the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series, and there were SPEED graphics shown during that sort of highlight package. As much as FOX Sports 1 condemns the former SPEED Channel (or it seems that way), I did find it the least bit surprising they didn't use FOX Sports 1 graphics or anything. It was a little bit of SPEED life. But of course, SPEED is dead; FS1 is alive and well.

So I got home from work a little after 7 and turned Fox Sports 1 to see what they had on. You know, just a full schedule of NFL, MLB, and a major NASCAR race (which at the time I didn't realize had been rain delayed) took place today. I figured they'd be showing some recaps of what had taken place. Nope. UFC, followed by more UFC. Really?? :boggled:

Only way I know of, outside of streams, is to pay for it from the V8 Supercar site (I think).

They don't do the youtube streaming anymore.

The Barrett-Jackson Auction from Las Vegas is going on FOX Sports 1. So more SPEED memories on FS1 now. The Saturday action will air on what channel? National Geographic, of course! What a bloody joke. This is just another example of what seems like SPEED being condemned, almost like its identity and everything about it constantly gets denied and never to be discussed ever again. Life goes on, but basically... it's still not the same anymore. SPEED was better than nothing even with its flaws and faults. Sad.

To be honest, the funeral for me came and went ten years ago. The days of Jim Liberatore's Speedvision, the Lost Drive-in, Dream Car Garage, Victory By Design, Legends of Motorsport, along with F1, ALMS, Grand Am, DTM & WRC were my fondest memories of what once was. The loss of Speedvision was WORTH lamenting. And believe me, I did. Speed for me, under Fox ownership, was like visiting the house of a despised relative--something you did to keep the peace out of obligation, but you hated every minute of it. Speed did a decent job covering Le Mans and F1. But I detested almost everything else they showed (outside of motorsports). And when I say detested, I mean I even disliked their over-sized graphics. Yeah, even their bloody LOGO rubbed me the wrong way--like something designed by a high schooler.

Am I sad that Motorsports no longer has a clear home on TV? Sure. But I hated the house it 'rented' for over a decade. The ship that finally sunk was not the one that originally left port. The vessel was assailed by Fox pirates and converted from Monaco casino class to Las Vegas style bling and bash--vomit on the carpet and everything.

EDIT: That said, I DO see your point. Fox basically made SPEED what it was. A mess. And now that they're done with it and the soiling is wholly complete, they're pretending it never existed. Ironic.

Meanwhile it Canada, it continues in the same mess.

At least we get the races that they air on FS1/FS2. Last weekend, they showed the Sandown 500, then after that they showed a K&N East race.

With FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2 showing the Petit Le Mans coverage, this is great insight to SPEED Channel before the sacrificing of SPEED to FS1. Great hearing Bob Varsha, Calvin Fish, and Dorsey Schroder call this one. As of this post, the on-air coverage ends at 8:00 PM EDT.

The channel is supposed to re-air the Monster Energy Million Dollar supercross (or motocross?) event tomorrow. Enjoy these memories if you miss SPEED.

As long as it's NASCAR it still has a chance on the new Fox Sports 1 and 2. As for the rest, I fear for it. It was a huge pain in the ass following the Petit Le Mans today, but well worth it. I wonder how USCR's coverage will fare next year, especially in the endurance races. That and V8 Supercars, which has been relegated to Fox Sports 2, and no reairs. I'm scared it won't be long until we won't be seeing them anymore, and they were just beginning to make a foothold here in the US!

I honestly think NASCAR might be threatened as the NASCAR coverage since going to Fox Sports 1 has been cut down significantly.

NASCAR will be on FS1 for the next 11 years at the very least, the Truck series is constantly growing in popularity and ratings, and at the end of the day David Hill won't forget what got him to where he is today (Chairman and CEO of FOX Sports, starting out as FOX director of NASCAR in 2001)

Unfortunately, NASCAR (racing in general) has been on FS2 and not FS1. FS2 is not part of a general package like ESPN2 is.

Which is exactly why I say NASCAR coverage is threatened. How is the general audience supposed to get their NASCAR coverage on a channel that is not on most basic Cable/Satellite provider packages?

Fox sports 2 will show WTCC this Sunday in primetime and WTCC & FIA GT the following week.Monday nights in primetime they will show BTCC and DTM

Too damn bad that not everyone gets FOX Sports 2. My parents' Dish doesn't include NBC Sports Network, and I'm really missing racing there. Enjoy the heck out of the FS2 coverage of WTCC and all if you got the channel.

I do still get some Speed E-Mails with Ten Things I Need to Know involving racing. Just got one earlier today. Speed still seems absolutely condemned to me.

For those with Dish (that do get Fox Sports 2), FS2 will be moving from channel 398 to 397.

Well @RACECAR, at least we know when PD scanned Bathurst for GT6

FOX Sports 1 has now been on the air for somewhere around seven months (and going on eight or so months this coming Thursday). I received a recent E-Mail that the "SPEED Newsletter" will relaunch as "SPEED Motors on FOX" starting May 1 of this year. Those of you who use Facebook and Twitter, SPEED Channel is still around... mostly in spirit. You still get various racing updates through social media from SPEED. It's just not really the same since the sacrifice of SPEED to FOX Sports 1.

A lot of the racing from the former SPEED Channel is still of fairly good quality. You're still watching the channel for NASCAR, AMA Supercross and AMA Motorcross, the United SportsCar Racing series, MotoGP, and more. So all is not entirely lost. You're still getting great racing and great racing coverage on FS1 even without a real dedicated motorsports and automotive channel.

Life after Speedvision/Speed Channel, though... got to give great respect to NBC Sports Network for stepping up with its indulgence in motorsports. I've seen my first Formula 1, IndyCar, Pirelli World Challenge, and even Rally America action on NBCSN. The World Challenge stuff (remember Speedvision/Speed World Challenge?) is something I haven't seen in a few years since the Versus (VS) days of NBCSN.

So I found these left overs from Speed Lately:

MAV TV:

Lucas On The Edge
Drag Boat Racing Series
ASCS (American Sprint Car Championship)
Won and Done (Basically, Pinks with new name but same people and host)
Stacy David's GEARS
Chop Cut Rebuild
Late Model Dirt Series
Off Road Racing Series (Live Coverage)

NBCSN:

The Grid

And for those of you who miss Windtunnel, good news: Dave Despain is getting his own show on MavTV called "The Dave Despain Show", April 25th

Wow, RACECAR... thanks for the heads-up on Dave Despain. "WindTunnel With Dave Despain" was surely the most popular show in the Speed Channel days. Now I REALLY want to get MAVtv. I've always loved "On the Edge" and how it seems like they can show almost any kind of racing, and it would be a great show. I've always been a Pinks fan, and I think I once seen a sample episode of "Won and Done." I'm also glad you mentioned "Mobil 1 The Grid," because I saw this once on NBC Sports Network and was glad this show is still on the air. It's the modern "Motorsport Mundial" as a great digest of motorsport.

So it's safe to say multiple motorsports TV programs have moved on since SPEED Channel's demise.
