Personally, I don't really have a lot of faith in Rise of Skywalker, but then again, I think it could go either way. At any rate, I don't think Disney has handled the IP as well as I had hoped, especially for the videogame aspect of it. IMO they should've allowed the license to be leased to multiple devs/publishers interested in the IP, rather than just one publisher. Disney really has no idea how to deal with videogames, which is really too bad considering all the money they generate.
But I digress. I really don't know about RoS. I don't blame Rian Johnson because I really liked Knives Out. I think Disney-Wars plays it too safe. It doesn't feel like the world's expanding, but instead, we're just getting more variants of classic designs. I thought the prequels were extraordinarily flawed, but one thing I thought they did especially well was expanding the universe. For example, I think the alien designs of the new movies is abysmal and entirely forgettable. Contrast this to stuff from the prequels, like just the podracing pilots alone.
I'm curious to see where the IP will go after this so-called "Skywalker Saga" concludes with RoS. It honestly reminds me of Kingdom Hearts, with its "Xehanort Saga," in that both feel a bit improvised rather than a saga that's actually been properly planned. But I think it could also be a good thing to throw off the baggage, to see Star Wars movies that don't try to compare themselves to the older stuff and feel a need to tack-on older elements even if they don't fit. Key word being could.
