A turbo Camry just makes sense.

I mean, as much as I'd lament the loss of the silky-smooth 3.0/3.5L V6, its due time that Toyota develops some powertrains that are up to snuff with what everyone else has been monkeying around with. I mean, we've had pretty much the same powertrain options in the Camry (Corolla, Highlander, yadda yadda yadda) for what? Three generations now? I mean, they just added a 6AT for gods sake.

Although, I will admit that I'd much rather see Toyota do a 1.6T to spread all over the board, just for the hell of it. Make it a top-trim option in the Corolla, make it the base engine in the Camry. Whatever. Shocks and stuff. Fun cars. What.

Back in black: Toyota’s Camry RZ is back for a 700-unit limited run after selling out its initial 1100 allotment earlier this year.

Special-edition Toyota Camry RZ returns with extra equipment and sporting intentions

TOYOTA Australia has reintroduced its sporty-looking Camry RZ sedan, offering bespoke design tweaks, more standard equipment and sports-orientated modifications for $29,190 before on-road costs.

Based on the Altise – which starts at $26,490 – the Camry RZ carries a $2700 premium over its donor car but, according to Toyota, includes almost $5000 of extra kit.

The most obvious change in the sport-inspired sedan is the addition of black RZ decals on the rear doors, RZ-branded front floor mats and 18-inch gloss-black alloy wheels wrapped in stickier low-profile tyres.

Under the sheet metal, Toyota has given the new Camry a bespoke sports suspension tune that “enhances body control without compromising ride comfort,” according to Toyota.

A freer flowing twin exhaust system that lifts power in the 2.5-litre four-cylinder from 133kW/231Nm to 135kW/235Nm while keeping fuel consumption at 7.9 litres per 100km is also fitted.

Gloss-black highlights feature throughout, including radiator grille, headlight inserts, side mirrors, boot-lip spoiler and rear diffuser.

Available in diamond white and cherry gloss paint schemes at no extra cost, or silver pearl, graphite and eclipse black for an additional $450, Toyota is planning just 700 examples of the new Camry RZ after selling out its initial 1100 run in mid-2016.

However, despite sharing many similarities with its forbearer, the new RZ gains satellite navigation, a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, six-speaker sound system with digital radio and voice recognition as standard and incurs a $700 price penalty over the mid-year RZ.

Earlier this week, Toyota added satellite navigation as standard to its mid-spec Camry Atara S, increasing prices by $700, and is also offering the technology on its base Altise variants as an option for the same amount.

Safety equipment on the Camry RZ includes seven airbags, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, vehicle stability control, traction control and anti-skid brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, enough for a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Toyota’s Camry contibues to dominate the mid-sized sedan segment, with 16,543 units shifted to the end of September this year – well ahead of rivals including the Mazda6 (3392), Subaru Liberty (2635), Volkswagen Passat (2465) and Ford Mondeo (2232).

Put a V6T or V8 (well hey they're in NASCAR and have V8's from pickups) in it. I mean if you're making a limited production run of something why not go crazy?

Because that would be too mind blowing.

Thing is, the car isn't all that ugly. Granted, that's the top-trim XSE looking the best in that racy red, which likely means a lower trimmed LE will probably be pretty disappointing. But, Toyota invested heavily in developing a chassis that's fun again, and I've got to say that news like that has piqued my interested. Reviews of the new Prius and other models based on that modular chassis have lauded solid handling characteristics, and if the same improvements can be said of the Camry, there might actually be a good car under there. Shame, of course, that so much of everything else seems to carry over from the old car again. Good for reliability scores, bad for overall improvements in fuel economy and performance.

I'm actually really impressed from the outset. I just hope it doesn't have that same cheapo appliancey feel and distinctive smell on the inside.

That looks pretty slick, actually. If they just got rid of the big fake vents on the rear I'd really like it on the whole. That front end looks fantastic, but at the same time it looks like a detailer's nightmare: So many pieces to be cleaned, so many bugs to be scrapped out of hard to reach places.

If those rear vents are functional I'm going to go drive it.

I lowered it a smidge. Also the new V6 makes 295hp in all other applications so if that holds true with the Camry we will be seeing a 13 second stock Camry

Anyone else notice how they snuck the trademark Lexus hourglass grill onto the XSE? If you can imagine it without the black split and Toyota nose at the top, that's pretty much it under there.
