And @Stotty is right. One of the big joys of the Model S is how you can be doing say 50 and plant your foot, and for it to take off pretty much as quickly as it does from a standstill. No hunting for gears, no waiting for the car to hit its power band. It's more akin to being in a very powerful turbocharged car right in the middle of its peak torque range, getting that surge, but not having to change up and do it all again afterwards. And with better response to the accelerator too.

Have Evo ever group tested the Model S? - i just wondered how it stacked up against it's rivals in more than just acceleration figures?

Nope. Tesla is never that keen on the idea. Think they're worried that we won't simply be blinded in wonderment at the performance and award it the full complement of stars by default. We've definitely tried in the past. They won't let us put it around a circuit either.

Bit of a bummer, not least because it really is a pretty good car. Does feel a bit big and unwieldy so I can't imagine it'd be great in say, Wales, but it might fare better on some big open A-roads where you can use the performance a little more.

Thought that was probably the case. Their group-test absence in all the magazines has been really obvious.

Tesla apparently has a new update to their autopilot system where the driver has to keep their hands on the wheel or it will shut off on them. They are also switching to radar as the primary means of detection.

I'm happy with this change in the system, to be honest. It keeps the drivers from being reckless or stupid with their Autopilot mode.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a wonderful update. It just feels like because of some reckless, dumb folks, those of us with some common sense to at least remain alert with our hands off (or at least 1) won't get the full satisfaction of an auto-pilot.

Hands on the wheel permanently totally negates the point of autopilot :dunce: While my hands are there I might as well steer!

There will probably be a backlash from customers as Tesla has effectively revoked a function (or rather changed the parameters of a function) through a software update. Goods don't function as advertised at purchase.

It completely ruins the purpose of auto pilot. I shall merely refer to the idiocy that is Mercedes' current system where you have to touch the wheel every 10 seconds.

Have you actually tried it?

I spent a few days with the new E-class recently which had the system. It actually works fairly well and does reduce the amount you need to concentrate without taking your mind and eyes off the road entirely - it's surprising how much time you spend actively keeping a car centred in its lanes for example, or turning accurately around the most imperceptible curves in the road. It's obviously not designed to get you from A to B without any input whatosever, more reduce the fatigue of driving long distances by taking away some functions from the driver.

The old Model S P85+ is going racing for this new Electric GT championship.

So a princess bride reference? I hope to god the new faster mode will be called "inconceivable" mode!

It's looking increasingly likely that an electric car, and a 4 door family car at that, will be the first series production car to accomplish 0-60 in the 1 second range.

I think tyres are the limiting factor for all cars.

Wonder what a P100D would do on a set of warm slicks.

It's been years since I've read anything about drag racing (typically was in the pages of Sport Compact Car), but isn't a roll cage of some sort required for cars running under 12's?

The idea that a sedan can out-drag an Enzo is just nuts. Yeah, the Ferrari wasn't designed for that, but still, some incredible performance figures out of the Tesla.

At the tracks local to me, if you run the 1/4 mile in 11.99999 and you have no roll cage then you get kicked out. Last time I went out (2011?), there was a guy running a Nissan GTR with only slicks in the back () and he would slam on his brakes near the end of the track to not break into the 11s. Another guy had a stock C6 Z06 who would roll off the line and granny shift until 3rd so that he could keep running.

If I remember correctly, at my at-the-time local track (Texas motorplex) required a helmet for anything faster than 13 seconds, and a cage for anything faster than 11 seconds.

Still the rule here around DFW, although I believe hypercars generally get the cage-rule bypassed because of how they are built from the factory.
