The AI thread

Since they started the GT Academy Time Trials, PD should have a good database as to how fast GT players are. Before they dumbed down the game since they didn't have a clue about this. ie AI didn't use the max speed of the car in GT4

If they make the Pro level AI within 2 seconds of the fastest lap a human has achieved then that'll be good. A fast time trial lap is usually about 1-1.5 secs faster than the average lap time, where everything is perfect and usually cannot be sustained on a lap to lap basis. Then that will make the AI really tough to beat without rubber banding.

And the Alien lap times are about 1-2 seconds faster than the average good driver, and 2-3 seconds faster than the average control pad player.

Yeah, that's a very good point. They know how fast the slightly-hardcore players are now, thanks to the TT. They're cleverer than people give them credit for sometimes... :p

Rubber-banding is the devil. I was playing GT2 the other day and I spun out (keyboard...) but was able to catch and overtake everyone within one lap of Autumn Ring Mini, because the cars hardly got any advantage over me because they slowed down so much! Then, they hang off your rear bumper nevermind how awesome a lap you put in. Definite no-no. OK for the casual crowd, I suppose, so, as many have expressed, an option might be good - or tie it into one of the difficulty settings.

Quite excited about the possibility of qualifying in the middle of a decently sized grid of challenging opponents offline.

I remeber this vid from a demo played at the GT Academy Finals
AI appears to be pretty fast (at highest level?), considering the driver here is one of the fastest Alien drivers we have on this forum. I know he was ranked no.1 in Australia in the Time Trial :)

Thats some wikked fast AI. I think that guy really did well for sit and play. Too bad he didn't get a better exit on the last corner and gain a position.

No way he was going to be able to get on the power before the AI being that far behind. Did well to bee as close as he was in the end

I think creating a good AI engine (a la motorstorm in racing games, or Halo in shooters...etc) is a very difficult task, more than people would imagine...

developers generally (and gamers too) confuse between GOOD AI and DIFFICULT AI, they are different concepts, an AI could be very difficult but stupid (it is difficult in a racing game just ebcause of speed for example and no eroors), and could be easy but very intelligent (the AI driver is not quick and do some mistakes, but he is intelligent in the sense he tries his best to avoid crashes, to surpass other racers...etc not just following a perfect line with max speed which generally is the rule in racing games + generally in racing games especially arcady one, AI cheats badly, even developers admits this saying they make AI cheat to make the game fun to play, for them what is the fun if you aare alone because you are too slow or too quick ? they want always an AI racer near you....)

hopefully in GT5 we will got intelligent AI and not just fast stupid AI...

Yeah, then he acted like a little :censor: and didnt show up to a media function because he had jetlag, wtf you know how many people woulda killed his whole family and drowned his dog to be there? And he sleeps in! Its not your burger flipping 925 @ burger king, this is GT ACADEMY! smh.

The AI still seems a bit bumper carish, maybe its because of the drivers in recent demos.

The CASTROL Supra from back then that avoided the collision had ample time and space to react, but ive seen other similar collisions at the Ring that happened a little faster and the AI had less time to react and the result was a collision, so maybe they will be aware but only to a human extent, some crashes cannot be avoided, they simply happen to quickly\closely.

One big issue i had with GT Ai is the belligerent adherence to the racing line, I hope when you overtake an AI car that they change their line instead of stick to the same opne even tho it means bumping\pushing or simply rubbing agasint you for 30meters.

Also braking, in GT4 the AI does not change their brake points if you are ahead of them, they always act like they are in first place with total clearance.

This proves that the AI in the Best Buy demos is still pretty bad.

Towards the end the Lambo just plows straight into the Ferrari with plenty of time to react prior to the collision

haha
I am extremely suspect about the GT5 AI, but I must say that lambo hitting the Ferrari did not seem to out of line to me (imho, ymmv).

OT, man the AI is awfully slow...I guess it is the due to the demo settings!
:)

I'm confused about the AI, could it be different builds?

We've seen videos where the AI have been very good and made quick corrections to avoid collisions and then we have videos like the one above with the AI not doing anything? all very confusing

I can't really complain about the AI we have seen so far. Even in Prologue I mean it wasn't perfect but I wouldn't complain about it. I could suggest improvements but I personally would be happy with GT5P AI. The more important subject for me is the rolling starts. They're totally flawed haha.

It actually looks to me like the Gallardo does try to avoid the player.
Hes oversteering coming out of the bend and if you watch close enough he moves just to the left of the player after hes corrected its own oversteer.

Also....Liking the sound in this video.

Hmmmm maybe the AI was mad at the previous earthling playing bumper car. So he released all his anger on the next player:dunce:

GT AI sucks.
They only drive in the RL

Videos with the racing line on, prove otherwise...
Look at 1:30 for example. And they drive far better than the average human it seems :p

its a racing simulator and in racing as you can see on tv or maybe you learned it the drivers try to stay on the best lane for the race even if other cars are in the way. they just go of this lane for overtaking or if they want to block the way for annother driver behind them.

it would be great if see this blocking and i think the AI will be a lot better than we have seen before because it was one of the most critized points at every GT game.

I think many people confuse bad AI and beginner level on gt. If you choose the lowest level, the AI won't drive as fast as you.

Check out the AI move at 1:21 :dopey:
It also seems to be moving around trying to block the road prior to that

One thing that concerns me with GT5 is the realistic damage combined with GT's AI. From those that have played demos are the AI any better at avoiding crashes. On GT5P every time I get into a group of cars its like NASCAR. The AI cars are constantly bumping you off the line and ramming into the back of you. It's frustrating enough when they just knock you into the grass or slow you by a few tenths. It will be downright infruriating if they actually knock your car out of the race continuously.

The other thing that concerns me is starting from the 16th spot against good AI. In some races in GT5P it was very difficult to get from 16th to 1st against mediocre AI within the short amount of time they give. If all they do is improve the level of the AI and change nothing else then it could be next to impossible to complete the event.
