But one is like 16 years old and the other one a nobody. He needs some experience in the middle. Keane has past his best.

Viera is also only good for another 2 seasons (or so).

16yrs old? :\ and the other 17. In 3 or four years they may cut the mustard, but what till then. Is that Heize guy a defender?

Yeah, he's an Argentinian defender. I think he was playing in Germany before.

Argentinian. The last Argentine didnt work out so hot. If he is playing for the national team in South America, there could be tension with Fergie.

I don't really think you can compare him to Veron, I mean they didn't pry this guy away from Seri A football for a large amount of moolah and I don't think he is playing in the copa de America or whatever the **** that tournaments called.

Premiership sucks. League Division One (nee Divison Three, formerly Division Two) is where it's at.

Haha.

The only thing is, you'll have a hard time finding people to talk about division 1 football here. I mean it's hard enough finding any football fans at all. Although since Euro 2004 I think we are almost on the same level of posts as the sport that is called football but doesn't actually involve much foot > ball action.

Oh yeah, aren't they changing the lower divisions names. Like Div one is going to be called the 'Uber mega awesome world championship leauge' or something.

Is that where Sheffield Wednesday hang their boots ;) Their best days were with Paul Warhurst (I think that was his name) and some other striking partner. They were sharp shooters.

Do we actually know if the Premiership is going to be the 'Barclaycard Premiership' this year. It might have a new sponsor

Race Idiot

League Division One (nee Divison Three, formerly Division Two)

S'wat I said... :D

Barclaycard Premiership = Barclaycard Premiership
Nationwide League Division One -> Coca Cola League Championship
Nationwide League Division Two -> Coca Cola League One
Nationwide League Division Three -> Coca Cola League Two

(from what I'm told).

Mike Rotch: Yep! Warhurst was great - originally a centre-half, Trevor Francis played him up front when we were a little short (David Hirst - the other guy - was rather injury prone). He scored 26 goals that season (1993), which saw us get to both domestic cup finals. And lose both to Arsenal 2-1 (after a replay in the FA Cup, in the last minute of injury time in extra time).

When the season finished, we sold Warhurst to Blackburn Rovers for £2.75 million (big money back then), whereupon he broke his leg in pre-season training. He had a spell with Bolton Wanderers recently, but retired last season after persistant knee problems.

David Hirst was courted by Manchester United, who tried to sign him for a then-world record £5 million. Wednesday refused and Hirst, who suffered from a problem with the cartilage in his knee only played 20 more games for Wednesday. We sold him in 1996 to Southampton for £1 million. He played a handful of games and retired.

Of note, a Sunday League side (amateur football) in Sheffield, called Brunsmeer, signed David Hirst and Chris Waddle for their 1998 season. Both turned out just to keep themselves fit and Brunsmeer regularly scored 5 or more goals a game. Imagine that - go out with your pub team and two very-recently ex-internationals look back at you... Brrrr!

I dont like those new names for Divisions 1,2 and 3. Sounds like an u/11 international competition. "Nationwide" had an aire of triumph about it. :grumpy:

Hirst! Thats the one. I remember that season, and moreove the FA Cup final. The Arsenal guy who headed the last minute winner had a broken nose or something. Andy.....Andy....something was his name. Tip of my tongue. Sadly, Wednesday have gone the Wimbledon route. Although I think Milton Keynes Dons FC (I think Wimbledons new name) are now second division :(

I remember the early 90's First Division. Those were the days *nostalgic tear*

Gerkus who? All of a sudden, because Greece won Euro 04, every Greek player in the team is awesome? Heh good, buy them all up, so when they suck Robson will be stuck with em 👍

:D
Hmph.

But...but...but he has gold boots! :dopey:

Nationwide was merely the sponsor - a Building Society, no less.

Don't forget, in 1992 the Premiership was League Division One, Divison One was Division Two and so on down to Division Four... So League Two now is what League Division Four used to be. Crazy.

Linighan. And Hirst broke his nose in the first half with an accidental elbow. We were great back then - Chris Woods, Roland Nilsson, Nigel Pearson, Carlton Palmer, Nigel Worthington, Chris Waddle, Chris Bart-Williams, John Harkes, John Sheridan (the great John Sheridan), Paul Warhurst and David Hirst. Great team.

But I think you'll find that the MK Dons (yes, the new name for Wimbledon) have gone the Wednesday route - we ploughed the furrow, they fell into it. Of course, Man City went Premiership -> Division One -> Division Two before us, but they came back and didn't have £18 million of debt...

We'll be playing at such mighty places as Torquay, Walsall, Hull and Wrexham this season. Cracking.

Bart-Williams had a brief stint and Charlton recently didnt he?

 MK Dons did a fantastic job of alienating its fans and supporters 👎
QPR are also in the err....First League... (ex Second Division) now arent they? Another shame, they were with Wednesday in the old First (Premier) Division.

I remember that Wednesday team of yore well. Its a slippery slope once an "established" team gets relegated. Maybe they will be playing at Elland Road next year this time :scared:

QPR finished 5th in the Premiership in 1995. Chelsea and Arsenal are the only London clubs that have finished higher. It's amazing how quickly teams can deteriorate. Leeds were in the semi-final of the champions league a few years ago. Now look at them. It was Ridsdales fault for firing O'Leary.

Yep. We got £1.75 million off Nottingham Forest for him, just before things went David Pleat-shaped (he sold all the good players because he didn't like them).

QPR finished second in Division Two this season, so they've been promoted to the old new Division One, which is the new new League Championship.

It's amazing how many teams populate the lower leagues that once played in the Premiership - Swindon, Wednesday, Bradford, Leeds, Barnsley, QPR... Barnsley almost dropped into Division Three in 2002-2003...

I remember when Barnsley in the Premiership.

But there are exceptions. Bolton and Charlton both went up, then down, then up and are now seemingly up for good. Norwich were also in the Premiership will about 8 or 9 years ago. They have only made it back up now 👍

The play-off in the new League Championship is harsh. I mean the team in 3rd can finish 20 points ahead of the team in 6th, and still not make it up.

That play-off system has existed since the 1980s...

Norwich were not only once in the Premiership, but they finished 3rd (like Sheffield Wednesday did), played in the UEFA Cup (like Sheffield Wednesday did) and beat Bayern Munich 2-1 on aggregate (similarities end - we beat Spora Luxembourg 9-2, then lost to a bunch of cheats at Kaiserslautern 5-3).

Back onto the slightly duller topic - Middlesborough. Not content with signing Michael Reiziger, they've just bought Mark Viduka for £4.5 million and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (Chelsea's top scorer last season, and scorer of 170 Premiership goals) on a free. Ouch.

I knew about Viduka, but not Hasselbaink going there. With that strike combo, the really have no excuses for anything but a top-10 finish.

Chelsea bought Hasselbaink for millions a while back. Not a smart investment from a pounds and pence standpoint :nono:

A Recipe for Disaster:

First, sign one Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and put him up front. Next buy and add one Mark Viduka to form a pair. If you are able to keep them bubbling happily, you should be rewarded with a delightful platter of goals. If not, the dish could turn very sour indeed. WARNING: Under no circumstances leave either to simmer on the bench. This will effect the whole course.

I noticed that Hasselbaink only really played well when he was paired with Gudjohnsen.

He obviously has outrageous talent, but he just doesn't cut it week in, week out. Unlike my very own Thierry! ;) But then again I would say that. Actually, I like Hasselbaink and I wish him all the best at Boro, just not against the Arse.

Too right, put him or 'Duka on the bench for a week and then they will not be happy chappies.

Indeed, Vidukes (as the Leeds players irritatingly called him) is a total liability. Did anyone see the game against Bolton towards the end of last season? Anyway, I'm sure he's a perfectly nice chap off the field, but not someone I would fancy signing. Especially for a team like Boro, who can't afford to have such a tempramental player. Still, I am glad that he's stayed in the EPL, because on his day he can produce fireworks, whether it be for all the right or all the wrong reasons.

He seems to blow hot and cold. Either knocks in 2 goals or gets booked in the 2nd minute and has an anonymous game.

I see Crespo wants to stay at Chelski now.

Well Kezman replaces Hasselbaink, but they still have too many big name strikers. Well just have to see who get's played.

I aint heard of Kezman before.

Me neither, Chelski aren't going to do as well this year as they did last year.
