If he meant streaming from a disc/disk, it basically foregoes pre-loading the entire map into the system's RAM in favour of loading it in chunks instead from the hard drive or Blu Ray. If you've ever played GTA IV on a knackered old console and driven too fast you might've seen the textures pop-in as the hard drive struggles to keep up with demand.

I doubt he meant streaming over the internet, but some games do do that. Basically the same as above only not locally streamed. It's risky in a game like The Crew, where you'd fall through the map if it wasn't loaded in yet (then again with always online DRM you'd lose your connection before that could happen), but Outerra (PC) does it, possibly others, allowing a silly amount (multiple Blu Rays worth) of map data in total, but you only take what you need when you need it and it possibly (hopefully) removes stuff you haven't used in ages to keep disk use down.

The idea being that you don't have to load a huge amount of data into the RAM, leaving some free for other stuff like AI programming and physics, all that good stuff. And in case you're wondering why it loads the map data into the RAM at all, it's because moving platter media like optical discs or hard drives is slow whereas RAM is more or less instant, so you need to have a certain amount buffered for the game to run smoothly.

Got it now,Thanks mate

This looks like a great game but I'm a bit worried about the customization ending up as being 'make your car street/race/rallycross/off road' and that's it. Pre-sets for each type. I want to be able to switch and change every little part of the vehicle, like using off road tyres with a rally cross style bodykit, or putting a huge off road type sump guard on a street racer. If the customization is completely open then this'll be a definite buy for me. 👍

This is TRULY open world! If Idaho is included, I know where I'm going :)

You won't be able to. If you lose internet and haven't saved, you're 🤬 basically.

Well then, I think I may have to pass this one due to rubbish internet connection...

Somehow I have the same fear... Let's hope for the best and see

When they said that you could go through the mountains I was like :O

This is truly, the first full free roam racing game ever. You can go anywhere.
Sorry Dan but Fuel beat it to that title quite some time ago - a bigger map too :)

True, this is the first true open-world racer of it's kind

The Crew open world free roaming video reveals cockpit camera - Team VVV

VVV: "It's fast becoming common knowledge that The Crew will put the 'massive' into massively multiplayer online racing.

Spanning some 5,000sq km, Ubisoft have taken on quite an audacious task to say the least: to create a richly detailed open world representing the entirety of the US.- So far, we've seen condensed versions of New York, Los Angeles and Miami.

In our latest E3 gameplay video, we take a leisurely drive and explore The Crew's massive map across a variety of terrain, and even encounter a spot of wildlife on our travels" (E3, PC, PS4, The Crew, Xbox One)

Rumor:

The Crew and The Division coming to current gen consoles? ( Xbox 360, PS3 and PC)

http://www.examiner.com/article/rumor-ubisoft-to-bring-the-division-the-crew-to-current-generation-pc

This part has me a bit baffled though:

This information comes from the source that broke news on 'The Crew' weeks before the actual reveal. Although this information still needs to be classified as rumor, the sources track record is solid.

Then they linked my orginal GT Planet -Ivory Tower Thread...... but I am not the source of this new rumor.

They just like you that much.

I'm curious about car sounds in this game, Doubly so if it's remnants of the Eden Games crew that did TDU2.

Lol, I guess I'm just all kinds of warm and fuzzy then.

The ex-Eden team responsible for TDU2 went on to form a new studio called Blossom Minds, which supposedly is going to focus on non-triple A games, probably mobile games etc. They had nothing to do with The Crew.

The Ivory Tower Studio does have some of the ex-Eden team members that worked on the original TDU game but had nothing to do with the 2nd game.

Some interesting things noted here:

Ubisoft Q1: The Division, The Crew 2014 releases narrowed

“After years of investing in the technologies, expertise and production capacity required for regularly releasing open world titles and for integrating online and social innovations, Ubisoft is now ideally positioned to continue on its path of winning market share and enhancing its financial performance.”

The Games

During a call to investors, CEO Yves Guillemot said to expect Ubisoft Reflections’s The Crew to land during Q1 2014, and for The Division to land closer to the end of calender year 2014.

While speaking of development plans for the firm’s studios, the CEO also said more open-world games will be in the works, which is on top of the nine such games released over the last seven years. along with more open-world games, the teams plan on taking advantage of co-op, socials, user generated content, systemic versus natural gameplay mechanics, and making games easier to get into.

Guillemot also said another key to successful games sales would be the addition of providing a “personalized experience through analytics.”

He also said that pre-order numbers for PS4 and Xbox One were “two times” that of their predecessors during the same pre-launch periods.
Guillemot also said that Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed 4: Blag Flag were sitting among the top five of the most pre-ordered games available for the upcoming consoles.

Watch Dogs is also expected to sell around the 6.2 million mark, according to the firm’s estimates.

This game has truly the potential to become on of my favorite games not only of 2014 but of all time. I just really hope, that you're able to drive in an open world like you could in TDU and it isn't all super buggy.

What the hell is it with the livery editor? Precut decals?! This is what I was afraid of. Especially in a game like this you can't even have your own custom livery? It also looks like the cars can only be lifted? I can only make my Skyline an offroader? Yuck =P I can't slam my cars? I thought the customizations is supposed to be deep and awesome. Seems like the only direction is to make it offroad. So again, the focus of this game is definitely not about the cars but actually about the crew and map? Can't wait to build that Skyline with offroad fender flares, flames, and brushguards! Oh yes, that will look very attractive!

Just assuming. Guess we'll see when it comes out.

I just read on Wikipedia that it's supposed to be a 90 minute drive from coast to coast in the open world... Holy moly.

What level of realism should I expect from the driving physics?

This look excellent, looking forward to this.

To the above poster, difficult to say, to me it looks like a blend of TDU and Need for Speed.

As long as the cars have a decent consistency in their handling like NFSHP then it can be as slidey as it likes. Nothing worse than an inconsistent handling model.

When I played it at the EB Expo last year, to me, the handling felt like Driver: San Francisco. Except nitrous is bound on X/A instead of pushing the left stick forward. (Thank God!)

Really? A Mini Cooper is the best car they could give for the pre-order?

Don't think I've ever made my opinions known about this game over here. So I shall do that now.

This is the racing game I have been waiting for since 2011. Not kidding. Ever since Criterion/Ghost took over NFS that series has been derailed into Burnout territory and Eden Games was shuttered last year. So as a lifelong NFS fan, this is the game to put a massive dent into the dwindling reputation of NFS.

Everything about this game is perfect to me. The driving model seems very much like Driver SF- which I may add the developers of said game are porting this to PS4- so that is a plus in my books. No more Criterion drifting which I have had to put up with for the past four years in Need For Speed. The customisation is the most in-depth I've ever seen out of a racing game, and bare in mind not many arcade racers have customisation these days. The online, for a racer looks absolutely fantastic and being able to drive around with my friends in our kitted out cars doing races and missions while progressing through the story feels truly next gen to me.

If The Crew is as good as it is made out to be, NFS will be screwed over this year. We have a "Holy Trinity" of Racing games coming out this year in the form of The Crew, Driveclub and Project CARS.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd Not buying this game http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=798596&page=2
Man, people sure are quick to jump onto the hate train. I can understand being upset, but I personally don't find the always online requirement or the micro transactions to be that much of an issue. As the game is a racing MMO, I expect it to be always online, otherwise it wouldn't be an MMO. I don't see how it's any different than playing any other online focused game, such as World of Warcraft, Team Fortress 2, etc.

As for the micro transactions, it seems that they are only going to be for buying performance parts. Since you can apparently buy everything with the in-game currency anyways, I don't really have a problem with it. It could only be problematic if the in-game currency is hard to come by, turning the game into a grind for players that are against using micro transactions. However we won't know if that's the case or not until release.

Anyways, this is really the only game I'm really excited for at the moment. Apparently the dev team, Ivory Tower, is a combination of developers from the Test Drive Unlimited games along with the devs from the Driver games. This merger is pretty clear in the game, as it has the size and exploration aspect of TDU along with the heavy handling from Driver: San Fransisco (which I personally really enjoyed). I also like the co-op aspect to the game, which reminds me of the online challenges in Burnout Paradise. The customization aspect looks great as well. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this game, probably at E3 👍

Im interested in this, I am liking in im seeing and hearing so far...

No solo game save, microtransactions that have lead to the grind being even longer and it brings the Free to Play model to a full price retail game?

If I find it doesn't at least have a photo mode, then I'm cancelling the preorder.
