Oh right...so this is old and not necessarily accurate anymore.

So we could still see Premium production models losing bumpers and such to the tarmac then, right?

I think it's probably not accurate.

As to where the damage could go... it could go a lot of places... I think it's quite possible we could see parts falling off final build. There are any number of reasons we might not (as killinator suggests running over stuff should damage your wheels and tires - but that level of game stoping damage may well be something PD doesn't want to or can't really impliment in GT5) so it's a kind of wait and see game.

I hope we get stuff falling off though... whipping around a corner and realizing you need to swerve around someone elses bumper sounds awesome!

I like persistent damage but I'm not expecting it. GT5 is doing enough as it is. Maybe GT6 or PS4 though.

See, we have different problems... you were having some problems with a couple of posters acting like zealots... Since GT5 was announced, no wait, since GT appeared on the PS3, what I saw was always this strong disbelief in what PD would deliver, etc. To this day still, people seem to dismiss most of their work because of err, 2D trees for example. Or with comments like "after 5 years, it better feature Jesus on a bike" or dismissing a detail\feature like it was the only thing PD working on in 5 years.

You probably know better than that, so it is easy to just ignore it. Things like that annoyed me to no end, but now it just isn't worth it >_>

Anyway, back on topic, yes, wait no. I don't remember seeing the bumper or the bonnet\hood coming of entirely, it always did hang in there doing nothing. But that Subaru rally car, did lose the right door completely and IIRC it did remain in the track.

If it does affect other cars, I don't remember

Some Spanish outlet did confirm that the damage isn't persistent. It will not carry over from one race to another.

That would be only a matter of tweaking some of the code they already have in place, no?

See GT3\4 cones and GT5 Tokyo Route's tire barrier\those orange-white barriers and Polyphony boxes. Apply the same properties for the door that the Subaru dropped and that thing could screw your wheels or send you airborne (wishful thinking).

My question is what is good enough? At what point do you say this meets my expectations? How do you come to these expectations and what is your logic for them? In my opinion GT was missing damage, it now has damage. This is enough. NO game beyond what Codemasters has done replicates any form of car damage in any realistic way and there work is still not extremely amazing, just the best we have seen. Burnout looked good but was very unrealistic. So what do people expect, GRiD type damage in GT? The truth is, until we get a PC developer than can leverage very powerful hardware, develop an extremely complex physics engine, recreate every single part of a car and then put all this together with real world data, we will never see a completely realistic racing game. And in my opinion to expect anything near that is rather pointless.

What build is this demo? The latest videos from gamescom had tire tracks left on the ground, this has none of that. This demo build might be the same one from before Gamescom, it's lacking some things that were in the latest build which we all viewed from Gamescom. The damage looks ok, but I don't really care as I try to avoid denting my car as I race even in FM3, I hate a damaged car.
That video was interesting to say the least the flying car thing was just weird as all heck. All I can say it just believe that isn't the final build of game code that much is sure. People will have a lot to complain about though, I can rest assured that these video's do not help with the current state of moaning. Can't wait to get mine though, will still be ready to race Nov. 2!

wow great link!! it also mentions how you are gonna be able to race up to 32 go karts in one race!!! plus it also says that the physics for those cars were made separately from the gt5 ones. 👍

Actually they were made for GT6.

Whatever damage stage PD is working now paired with a sensitive mechanical damage system is what I would call good enough.

Until now PD only showed two stages of visual damage (scratches+dislocation of body parts and then deformation), on all builds mechanical damage is lagging behind, so they just need to level the two things and throw it at us on TGS

Newer than E3 (more advanced damage) but older than GamesCom (sparks toned down, inclusion of tire marks etc), or at least that's what I got from what SolidSnakex posted.

That's just a demo thing. That's the sort of bug that is ironed out in the final version. Well, at least it should be and judging from previous GT games, it will be.

That's a good question. Where do we draw the line?

My answer is, as a GT fan, I want GT to be the best. That's exactly what concerns me since the damage I see now is not. Sure it does a few things like no other but overall it's underwhelming. Well, at least to me. Kaz used to say they never did damage before because they would wait to do it properly, like nobody did before.

Well, I'm still waiting for the final result. I hope and believe it's better than what we saw so far.

To me damage would be okay only if it didn't have all those bumpers getting VERY strange and unrealistic deformations. Bumpers are made of plastic, right? So after a crash just let them hang on a side and brake/have a few scratches. Something like what we saw at Gamescom 2009.
Nothing to say about body dents, they're good, even if some cars are made of carbon fibre and should shatter instead. I'm not expecting this kind of damage this generation.

Just get rid of the "accordion/pumpkin face/melting" deformations on the bumpers... PLEASE. It's very embarrassing 🤬

Actually they were made for GT6.

Technically yes, they wanted to include that in GT6 but decided to feature it in GT5

Well the older damage builds had a good amount of paint scratching off and the GamesCom demo had skid marks, better smoke and sound so I gotta think this is an older build. The damage looks weird because the paint scraping off hasn't been applied to this BestBuy demo damage model.

Great link!! unfortunately is in spanish...but i'll translate the most important things.

1)Cars will not maintain damage after a race...which means you won't have to repair them. (damage is only affected in a race and after that the car will fix itself)

2) We will be able to race up to 32 Go karts in one circuit!!! and their physics were specifically made for those cars.

3)Track editor was, at first, going to be a full-fledge system but they decided to drop it since it was too complex and it would often take hours to make a circuit (maybe for gt6?)

4) B-Spec mode is "spectacular" and players will be able to make decisions like: "driving style: normal, calm, risky", etc...and the ability to see everything happen in real time!

I have... I think it was one of the Forza vids when FM3 came out... it was much laughed at and T10 was criticized for rushing a game to release because that's what happens when you rush things and aren't perfectionists

OK, I'm really surprised that everyone is expecting Polyphony to somehow skip three or four stages of evolution with GT5.

Initially the thing that got me about GT was that the cars had that layer of reflection on them that no other game was doing, which looked like the shiny layers of paint on cars.

The cars also looked right on the road, they just seemed to move right and not rotate around a central axis like many other games at that time.

Later they evolved the graphics model to include chameleon paint colours and then other textures like leather and canvas and plastic in the interior.

I imagine they will evolve the damage engine in a similar manner - scratches and dents of that original shiny generic car metal came first, then the deformation which we are seeing now, which doesn't look so bad compared to real life smashes of that generic car material:

Then we'll see things that are harder to model like fiberglass, carbon fiber, plastic, glass and rubber.

This is evolution 1 of damage for Polyphony and GT... show me any other games first attempt at damage that looks anywhere near as good and you can keep whining 'till the cows come home.

Believe me, if my beloved Elise deforms like that as if it's made of tinfoil I will be devastated to start off with, but I'll get over it as this is the most impressive 1st generation of damage I've ever seen a company develop.

Also I knew that the previous vid was just cosmetic and I agree in everything what CAMARO has said, but hope you noticed that we were speaking about cosmetic damage! deformations, broken parts and all that. We know very little about mechanical damage in GT5 to compare.

I've wanted to say that but didn't want to face all the complainers at once. They expect to see a damage system that is light years ahead without seeing progression through GT5 then to GT6 etc. They believe that since PD has taken 5 years, it should be perfect. The same can be said about the physics and graphics. The evolution of GT is as much fun to witness as it is to play. I guess we're just in a completely different mind set than others.

When PD first released GT1 long ago it was quite rightly applauded for its ground braking level of detail and game play at there first attempt.

How come now they need several stabs at it to get it right, as some are putting it.

So the damage that we'll see in GT5 should never be upgraded for GT6, GT7? You want PD to only work on the damage for GT5 and forget about it for future games?
