Mclaren have a History of signing drivers way in advance and then leading the Media on, chances are they have signed Alonso or who ever months ago.

I haven't seen so many signings so late in the season...ever. This is what teams used to do in the 1960s-1970s.

Usually by September, the biggest moves/announcements are made and everything important falls into place around the time of Monza, so Ferrari has a distraction (and thus, a handy excuse for those two-tenths of a second). The midfield teams sort it out with a few races to go, and the back of the grid makes announcements in January. Every few years, something crazy happens, and shakes things up due to illness, injury, or broken glass.

What an odd year.

Of course, sometimes they wind up with a Heikki Kovaleinen, but they were completely blindsided by Alonso's sudden really-late-2007 departure.

There is no way McLaren were "blindsided" by Alonso's departure because both sides in that matter wanted him gone. Kovaleinen on hiring was seen as an up-and-comer, but I doubt there was any reason to think he was in Hamilton's class. In any event, his primary qualification was that he wasn't likely to rock the boat, and to make sure he didn't, McLaren also went to the trouble of imposing team orders to the effect he wasn't to get in Hamilton's way. (Go back and watch the tapes from 2008 if you doubt the team-orders bit, by the way; Kovaleinen always made it obvious when he was moving over for Hamilton, going wide every time.)

That's true. I wonder if over the last few years the multi-year contracts have had later decision-dates in them? Teams want to know the value of a driver after the WDC is closed, perhaps?

I definitely think that the late "decision" with McLaren/Alonso is to do with the complexities of Alonso's Ferrari contract. Often for driver-instigated separation it's a performance clause that holds the weight, I could see that not being closed until the end of the season.

Alonso, Vettel, Button, Hamilton and Rosberg... all world-champions (or potential champions) with uncertain futures, who would want to make a decision on that merry-go-round until the season closed?

The worst kept secret in F1 comes out. I hope that Alonso goes to McLaren but Jensen stays. Alonso and Magnussen have had their fair share of on-track incidents so I wonder if that could have dented any possible relationship between the two. Plus, Jensen does have Alonso's backing so maybe he can sway Ron to keep him.

I doubt it, considering that it was Raikkonen and Magnussen.

I thought it was Alonso and Magnussen that had a bit of coming together at Spa? Ok, obviously I thought wrong.

They did. Although IIRC they never touched, Alonso hit Vettel to cause some damage to his front wing.

Plenty of champions in the past have been desperate for a drive and received absolutely nothing, you can't be choosey in this sport when so many good drivers are trying to get in.

Still not seeing why Red Bull are ok with their line up, don't get me wrong I love Ricciardo but why is arguably the most consistent top performer over the last few years not have 2 of the best drivers out there, is it a money issue?

I assume you're referring to Kvyat?

Obviously Red Bull see something in him that they don't see in Vergne.

Elsewhere, Stoffel Vandoorne has reportedly impressed Ron Dennis a lot with his GP2 performances.

Perez has officially been confirmed at Force India on a 3 year deal.

Links man we need them :scared:

Thanks for the info and I figured this would happen, after this year no one was looking for Perez it wasn't anything like his 2012 Sauber year. After being booted by McLaren and proving to the world why McLaren was right to drop him...he wasn't going anywhere else.

Also Force India said they weren't planning on changing the line up anyways and wanted to keep their current group so, not surprising and good for both parties. I don't mind Perez on the grid especially when he makes a certain Felipe Massa cry.

Yep, don't get me wrong he has potential but I wonder if they're happy with their line up. I wonder if the Renault engine was the best one someone like Alonso would have expressed interest (assuming they can afford him).

They have Ricciardo so Having someone like Alonso will just ruin both's chance at a drivers title if they are marginal at a Title chance.

and they also have to justify there young driver program, Kyvat has shown enough raw speed this year to earn it i think but he is still another season away from showing it consistently imo.

They had that exact problem with Vettel in his early years. Even in 2010, as quick as he was, he was extremely erratic. To the point that he was more than fortunate to win the title that season.

Still think money has a bit of play here, Ricciardo was on peanuts compared to Seb, imagine Kvyat will be the same.
