No surprises there. Vergne apparently knew he was leaving in August, even though Franz Tost lobbied to keep him as a yardstick to measure Verstappen by. Pierre Gasly was only ever an outside chance, and probably needs a season in GP2 in order to come good. And while the British media got carried away at the thought of another British driver in Alex Lynn, the GP3 field wasn't as exciting as last year's and Sainz has the FR3.5 crown, which was always going to be tough to compete with.

I predict a major fall-out between Verstappen and Sainz next year. Verstappen pushed in the queue ahead of Sainz initially and had said he wanted Vergne as his teammate next year. I can't see them seeing eye to eye for very long if at all

I don't think Sainz will care too much. He got the drive in the end - and he was always told that he had to win the FR3.5 title to get the seat. He and Verstappen were the inly genuine contenders for the seat.

As for Verstappen wanting Vergne for a team-mate, the comments weren't really appropriate. He is not the one making decisions in the team. And as much as he might gave wanted to race alongside Vergne, he has to accept the team's decision.

Max Verstappen is too young race in F1 IMO

Does age really count for anything? Either he's physically capable or he's not, and he's either a good enough racer or he's not. If he's physically capable and a good racer, he could be 12 or 62 for all it would matter.

I'm not sure that being mature enough to hold your 🤬 together really counts for anything in F1. Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso and others have been masters of throwing their toys when they've felt like it, so he'll probably fit right in.

The problem with this statement is that you are assuming that with age comes skill. And so you wind up in a situation where Verstappen, who has demonstrated an admirable level of talent, cannot race in Formula 1, but Sergio Canamasas can despite his reckless disregard for everyone and everything around him.

The legal concept of capacity recognises that, as people keep developing, their ability to handle greater responsibility and appreciate the consequences of their actions increases. However, it also accepts that different people mature at different rates, and so there comes a situation where people cannot do things because the law says they can't, even if on an individual level, they could handle it; similarly, some people can do things legally that they are not mature enough to handle - but making laws that apply to each individual is unfair and inefficient.

But when we're talking about Formula 1, the concept of capacity cannot be applied, because talent and maturity are not directly proportional. There are only a handful of people who can drive the cars in the first place, and so allowing them to race on the basis of something as arbitrary as their age is nonsense. People said the same thing about Jaime Alguersuari - that he was too young, that he couldn't handle the car, and that he would be a danger to other drivers, and none of those fears were realised.

If it's an issue of maturity, it won't manifest on the circuit. If Verstappen has trouble settling in, he's likely to do a Jenson Button. Button was young and extremely talented when he made his debut, but the sudden fame and (relative) fortune went to his head and he went through fits of silliness. It wasn't until he got to BAR that he really settled down. That, I think, is the biggest danger Verstappen faces - not some idea that he's an irresponsible youth who will crash into everything.

Im very instrested in the Sainz vs Verstappen Battle, you have one guy who has been signed as the next big thing who missed Several seasons worth of driving based on his early promise.

Then you have Sainz who Dominated one of the strongest Pre F1 Tier series first time out and got into F1 the Conventional way through Results in strong fields.

Verstappen has more Experience then Sainz in the Current F1 Formula but I still think Sainz will have it easy in the first few rounds as Verstappen will need time to unleash his talent.

Should be Very good battle.

Where he has done limited running for no more than ninety minutes at a time. In terms of mileage, Sainz probably has the upper hand. If not, they would be even. But there is no way Verstappen has more.

That still doesn't mean that he is going to have the upper hand, considering that Sainz has more experience of Formula 1 in general and of high-powered open-wheel racing cars.

He's too young to be a senior heart surgeon, or to be a family judge, or to be a military commander, those things require some wisdom (in my opinion).

To be an F1 driver you need to be the right size, shape and strength and to be mentally and physically capable of controlling a current F1 car through consistently world-class laps. Verstappen ticks those boxes, or so it seems.

And Sainzinho does too. But more so. :D

I didn't say that, I just said he had more experience in the current formula.

I know that Sainz has more Big Car experience which is why I stated that it may take Verstappen longer to show his true speed on 2015.

I'm not doubting his driving ability, more or less his mental strength.

I don't see any evidence in his career for that so I presume you're making that judgement on age alone?

One could easily argue that at his age he's in the very best place mentally.

Interesting lineup.
I hope Sainz and Verstappen don't go the way of Piquet, and actually put in a performance their dad would be proud of.

I also really want to see a battle between Nasr and Massa. Just to hear the commentators try not to get tongue tied.

That's a bit unfair, we haven't even seen them in the cars yet. And Piquet Jr. wasn't so good, he had a lucky 4th but didn't impress as he had in GP2.

Or was Piquet Sr's pride when Jr hit the wall? I wasn't clear on what your point was :)

My point was the opposite of that. Piquet Jr was rubbish and I hope the other 2 don't go that way.

A comma could have solved this misunderstanding.

Sainz has came a long way in the last year, he was very lucky to not be sacked by Redbull after last years GP3 season and has been lacking a bit in the years before, however thise season he exploded in Pace and took control of the F3.5 Championship basically from Day 1.

He was Under massive pressure this year to perform and excelled massively, he was shattered when his obvious route to F1 was taken from him(from the verstappen signing) even though he had done the best possible job he could of done, but managed to regroup and take the title.

Top guy, and a tip of the hat to Vijay Mallya for letting him do both commitments. When was the last time a current Formula 1 driver entered into the Le Mans 24 hours? Must have been a while?

Sebastien Bourdais is the last one I recall. That was 5 years ago or something.

Lotterer did the opposite as well :P

About McLaren, looks like no announcement until Thursday or Friday

No McLaren announcement on Monday

The comments are hilarious, people feel entitled to know the lineup immediately. Reminds me the Queen song ... I want it all, I want it all, I want it all, and I want it NOW!

It's silly. Who actually cares who drives in the most incompetent team on the grid?

Maybe they are holding out for a three car rule?

You laugh... but if neither Marussia nor Caterham are poised for a comeback then what's the cutoff point for a decision?

Official publication is 30th of November, as far as I know they're both still showing as entries? A decision would have to be made very soon, the teams have little enough time to resource a third car as it is.

It won't happen though, I suspect this is about finer contract benefits at McLaren right now. :D
