I think It will probably come down to how many more years Button can commit to the Team with anything less then 2 unacceptable.

While I'd love to see Button continue in F1 I think that staying would do him a disservice. As you say, he'd want a couple of years. Can we expect a competitive McLaren-Honda in that time? I don't know but if not what a waste of two good years of JB's career. Right now I'd prefer to see him in WEC.

It doesn't strike the same fear as seeing Fernando Alonso don the red overalls for the first time all those years ago... I don't know why - Ferrari are sure to return to the front of the F1 grid at some stage, so why not at a time when they have 5 drivers championships in their line up...

McLaren's board meeting broke up without a driver-decision. The BBC say that Mansour Ojjeh and Ron Dennis (once friends) are now "at loggerheads".

BBC.

Given that the holdup is because they can't decide between JB & KM for the second seat, I'd say that's all the confirmation you need about Alonso.

Radio Le Mans said a couple of weeks ago that they'd had confirmation of Alonso from an unnamed source inside McLaren.

It's the worst kept secret, I just hope they don't try to make a fuss when it comes. They have dealt with it really poorly.

I just wonder... McLaren clearly know that JB won't hang around... yet still he is. There's some contractual shennanigans afoot here, I think. McLaren have a 2015 drive line-up if they want it (JB, KM). Are they holding Alonso to the ropes over his contract? He has nowhere else to go, it seems. Ron Dennis is clever and tough. This all smacks of the bottom line, I think.

Didn't Alonso want to go into 24 hour Endurance racing? That could be the hold up weather he stays for 2015 or moves on.

I haven't heard that. I'm fairly sure he left Ferrari because he wants to win another World Championship and didn't think Ferrari could achieve that.

Anyway the real reason for the delay.

I still think Alonso waving the French Tricolor at this year's start was more than just a celebrity appearance. Either he, Ferrari, or both have a big interest in LMP1 racing. They have to.

There was already a piece going around that for 2015 he won't unfortunately have the time, for one reason or another. Yet Nico Hulkenburg does???

But on the debate over Button and Magnussen, I think it narrows down to either having a fairly competitive driver short term (Button obviously) say 1-3 years. Or, invest in a driver will some fairly reasonable potential, who may reach similar competitiveness compared to "the other driver" within 2 seasons, and also stay competitive for longer.

Also, we still don't really know if this renewed Honda relationship is what it take to make Mclaren a winning car again.

It's going to take more than a new relationship with Honda to have a winning car. The guys behind building a winning car need to be competent enough to build said winning car.

And besides competence they need a well organized and clearly structured team, something I'm not sure McLaren is right now.

I wonder what I would be reading all over the net if this (internal struggle and driver lineup stalled decision process) was happening at Ferrari. LOL, I bet something like "this is the italians being italians".

They need some British to sort them out.

Yes. Some McLaren British. That would sort Ferrari out! That level of competence is hard to find.

Toby Moody is claiming on Twitter that "big news" is coming today. Most people assume that it relates to McLaren, but it could mean anything, really - assuming that it happens at all.

I think it comes down to money. If they want the better driver, then take Button. If they want Magnussen in a couple of years, then hire him in a couple of years. Not hiring Magnussen this year doesn't mean they can never hire him again.

The only sticking point with this plan is paying Alonso's presumably massive salary as well as Button's not inconsiderable salary. It's not like McLaren haven't done something similar before with the Hamilton/Button pairing, but they weren't a borderline midfield team then either.
