OK, a few questions (that I don't expect to be answered)...

1) Why is it that every time I watch Full Metal Alchemist I feel horribly depressed?

2) Why is it that Inu Yasha's father was never shown in all his glory and not simply as a big old grave yard of huge bones?

3) Why didn't Inu Yasha end in a more "acceptable" fashion (avoiding spoilers for those who haven't seen the final episodes)?

In any case, FMA touches my soul and IY makes me wish more episodes were being made. :(

Well, he is dead and not a main character. I remember seeing Him protecting his wife and Inyuasha in the third movie.
Because FMA is a sad anime.

1) Why is it that every time I watch Full Metal Alchemist I feel horribly depressed?
^ I think because FMA is an epic-drama type anime. Thats why I'm not too big of the series. I'd rather watch Death Note, I'd take the suspense rather than the drama part of it. :sly:

2) Why is it that Inu Yasha's father was never shown in all his glory and not simply as a big old grave yard of huge bones?
^ The third movie showed all 'Father' Inu's glory, heh, even the numb-minded Sesshomaru trembles his pressence. =Tetseiga+Tenseiga+Sounga= :)

3) Why didn't Inu Yasha end in a more "acceptable" fashion (avoiding spoilers for those who haven't seen the final episodes)?
^ I'm on the same boat as you are buddy, even with the movies, it doesn't really tell the final sequences of the series in which its a bummer. :(

In any case, FMA touches my soul and IY makes me wish more episodes were being made. :(
^ Inu Yasha, has stupid many episodes as it is, I hope there will be a nice trilogy on how Naraku & Co. will be finished. I think Rumiko-san hasn't decided yet. :indiff:

-> On FMA, I honestly haven't watched all the eps. So far I wasn't that captivated of the series unfortunately. :)

Currently I'm watching the "Ah! My Goddess" series, and all I got to say is GO WATCH IT!

I've found my all time favorite anime in this show.I'm surprised in how much automotive/mechanical/motorcyle stuff is in this show! Heck one of the goddesses puts TWINTURBOS on Keichii's motorcyle!

What are you're top 10 favorite animes of ALL time?
^ Hmm, tough question, heres mine (as of 09-09-2007):

1. Trapp Ikka Monogatari TV:
Trapp5.jpg

= Basically an anime adaptation of "The Sound of Music", this series moved me til I cry. :(

2. Hotaru No Haka:
hotarunohaka1.jpg

= The story is about the grimm (Japanese side) reality of WWII. The story is so strong I had to cry. :(

3.
Gundam Wing:
gundam_wing.jpg

= Conspiracy, action, drama, and twisted plots made this anime one of my best in my book. 👍

4. Death Note:
11804.jpg

= The plot twists and suspense are the best traits on this anime. It caught me off-guard actually. :scared:

5. Aa! Megami-sama! TV series:
amg015xq.jpg
ahmygoddessseason2vol1.jpg

= Sorry if I'm specific on this one, but this has to take the cake of all Megami-sama series, it follows the manga at a ration of 85%. :O

6. Azumanga Daioh!:
xjaymanx_azumanga_01sm.jpg

= When it comes to simple humor, this IS the best!

7. Peter Pan no Boken:

:)

NGE is mainly based on religious symbols and myths.
Best part of 08th MS Team

Chibi MS version:

What are you're top 10 favorite animes of ALL time?

Well, I can't say I've completed much more than 10 series, so top ten is sort of a wash, but here's some of the ones I think deserve mentioning:

Anything Key by KyoAni (AIR, Kanon, presumably Clannad)
I really am a sucker for emotional stories with adorable characters. Really sweet, may induce manly tears, great stuff as long as you don't mind suspending disbelief a bit (always tricky with these sorts of harem-esque premises)

Cardcaptor Sakura
Know your roots. Seriously. It's what got me going, and for some reason a show where you're almost twice the age of every character can still be very appealing (even if you're not a pedophile); even if it is simple, there's a lot of good stuff to be said about fluff. Not to say there isn't character development, in a sense.

Azumanga Daioh
Good stuff about fluff. The perfect summer anime for when you just want to kick back, relax and have a few laughs.

School Days
It's not a great series but one that should be watched (even if it's not concluded yet). It's almost like a lesson of what not to do with relationships in that every character is highly flawed and the whole series is set up to be in a sense, a massive trainwreck. To that regard it's not really a feel-good anime but it is a good show to watch if you like soap-opera-ish drama (or if you like laughing at it). Certainly it'll keep you on the edge of your seat (in either a captivating or a "I can't believe that's really happening" sort of way); it's induced strong emotions in a lot of viewers in the community (although it's mainly anger.)

Honorable Mention: Tsukihime, the Visual Novel (since it's not an anime)
If you've watched the anime, the anime is good, but the visual novel is so much more, it really is. There's an English patch out by Mirror Moon, and the best way I could describe Tsukihime is like a Key series anime (since, after all, they were visual novels too) with quite deep and touching stories for the character, and a touch of action and the supernatural as well. Only problem is that it does get a bit messy at times - so if you're squeamish, consider staying away. At least the adult content can be disabled with the English patch.

Could someone please tell me what that anime was in the second clip. Another question, when will Kakashi Gaiden be aired? I'm waiting for it a long time:D

SEED is overhyped and overrated. It's The original gundam with teenage/emo angst.:sly::sly:

Honorable mention. These use to be on my list of favorite animes or had ONE thing that kept it from it being on my list.

Card Captors (the dub sucked monkey butt)-
Great show, great anime, and I hate to admit I had a crush on Sakura (I was 10 when this show came on. DON'T judge me!:)lol)

Vandred-
Pretty original storyline and funny charaters. And a wierd surprise twist.

Samuri Champloo-
A "cowboy Bebop" for samurai and hip hop fans. The creators now need to do robots and dance music!👍

Eureka 7-
Great love story. Sometimes they over did it though. GREAT ENDING!

YuYu hakusho-
I loved the humor.

Ten is a big list for me since I'm still not the biggest anime guy. I'm sure most of my favs are commonly availible here in the US (which doesn't speak well for me in amongst the hard core people :ouch: :( ;) ).

+rep being sent to vanishingboy and nk4e. 👍 Good replies with pictures and video. 👍 The Gouf in 08th MS was indeed awesome. Also, did I see a japanese Barefoot Gen up there in Vanishingboy's post? Definately not the same name but I wonder about the movie.

As for my favs... Just as many as I can think of right now, all movies and series.

Criteria: Great Art, Great Story, Great Character Development.
Those three critieria will account (IMO) for most of the choices over similar titles (even from within the same overall series).

1. AKIRA (The Movie)

2. Cowboy Bebop (The Series)

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion (The Series)

4. Full Metal Alchemist (The Series)

5. Ninja Scroll (Original Movie)

6. Ghost In The Shell (Original Movie)

7. Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Star Dust Memory

8. Macross Plus (4 part OVA)

9. Naruto (The Series)

10. Read Or Die (The Movie)

That's just what I can think of right at this moment. I know there are a few on there bound to disappoint a few of you and I'm sure there are some I'm missing that could possibly take the spot of others.
In any case, that's my list. :D

Honorable mentions:
DBZ, Trigun, Inu Yasha, Samurai Champloo, Fist Of The North Star (Original Series), Kenshin, Ronin Warriors, Guyver. 👍

Oh, by the way... The Anime in the second clip is from "Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team." 👍 👍
(awesome anime but I could only put one gundam on my list and 0083 wins that for me) :dopey:

^ Nope, you're off the mark there, thats Grave of the Fireflies. Its one powerful anime movie that puts a lot of highly acclaimed anime movies to shame including Spirited Away.

💡-> Oh I forgot to post my criteria, here it is:

1. Artwork - Simplistic but beautiful, not too detailed like Ninja Scroll. Death Note is my borderline when it becomes to detailed art.

2. Story - Good character development with substance of the story. And the flow must be consistant, no stagnant sequences.

3. Genre - Shounen to Seinen action, romantic-comedies, or anything that make feel "aahhhh!", anti-stress series per se.

:)

Nk4E-> Hmm, anything beyond Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy back in the '50's. I really not so sure about that.

I don't think he was saying Astro Boy was propaganda. I believe he was saying Astro Boy was the oldest anime and since it came after WW2 it couldn't have been used as propaganda during the war. 👍
Anime hasn't been used as propaganda during any particular campaign (as far as I know). However, shows like Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex and Blood Plus both make use of propaganda-like satire to demonize America.
GITS:SAC uses terms like the "American Empire" and Blood Plus uses a story where the US created monster vampires for use in the Vietnam war. Not exactly complimentary of the U.S. but I'm not expecting this sort of thing to be absent from Anime when it is present is so many other forms of media. :indiff: Of course that's all part of the stories for those shows but that's just how it works isn't it? :sly:

Blood Plus isn't part of the Original Blood movie though. IN Blood the original Vampire. Saya is part of a American Organization that hunts down those monsters. Plus most of GITS:SAC is mainly in Japan( I think)

I see top 10 lists, but what should be the difinitive top 10 anime list for someone who wants to get more into anime? I've seen pretty much everything from Studio Ghibli, Akira, the Bebop movie, Appleseed (remake) and GITS. As for series, I've seen pretty much all of Initial D, some of Bebop, Cromartie High, some Azu Manga Daioh, some Excel Saga, some Desert Punk, most of Samurai Champloo, and I think thats it. What else can you guys recommend?

Jojo's BIzzare adventure

Blood Plus isn't part of the Original Blood movie though.

I never said blood plus had anything to do with Blood the movie. :sly:
Also, the fact that most of GITS: SAC takes place in Japan has little to do with the "propaganda" value. :indiff:

But oh well, there are some similarities that I found to link to the movie after watching the first ep of Blood Plus.
I have no more comments T_T

Got a weird question. Is Transformers also anime?

Well, yes and no... :sly:
"Hasbro" created the toy originally and from there Comics, TV Series, and Movies ensued.
Hasbro is an American company but I doubt all of the various products have avoided Japanese influence.

Basically, Transformers put up everything to mimic anime, but it still does not qualify as anime.

The base of most anime (probably in origin as well), was the creation of Japanese cartoons based on popular comic books (manga?).

Since Transformers was created by an American Toy Corporation and initially marketed as an American Toy, I can not say Transformers qualifies as Anime. :ouch:

But something like Robotech!? :D 👍

Thnx for the quick response Kent. +rep:tup:

just finished Death Note yesterday and i must say that the ending sucked big time. The whole story was taking you in the cartoon and with that ending, it was really dissapointing:(

Did Macross come before Robotech?

Macross is Robotech... They just named it Robotech for American or more likely, Western distribution.
In any case, Macross is very similar to Transformers but differs since we can certainly call it anime.
Likewise, Gundam can be called anime as well on it is probably a more pure anime in heritage being that it was originally a television show made in Japan (doesn't get much more anime than that!). :D
I think Macross dates about the year 1982 and Gundam dates to about 1978. 👍
Not sure on those dates though. :ouch:

Also, thanks for the rep appie17.

Well, I always thought that Macross was the serious ( drama) side of Robotech. With more dog fights than Mech fights like how Samurai X is the comedic side of Rurouni Kenshin

Wait . . . what? Maybe I read this wrong, but Samurai X is no where near the comedic side of Rurouni Kenshin. Rurouni Kenshin is the funny part of the series and Samurai X is the serious, dark side of the series.
