I know prices far higher than what you have, so unless they're higher, they can't make me cry. Japanese ones, where you pay like $70 for 2-4 episodes. I paid $440+ to import all 12 episodes of IS: Infinite Stratos 2. I also paid $370 to get all of the first half of Fate/Zero back when the yen was strong. I've done a decent amount of importing, so I've felt those prices, despite the dollar getting stronger than the yen ($1=around 120 yen these days).

As for streaming, CR>>>>>FUNi

CR has always had the better video player. Though there's the usual video quality issues. Hello The Pet Girl of Sakurasou being completely plagued by banding. (FUNi has issues too. Hello banding on Absolute Duo.)

I nearly spat milk all over my laptop after reading that first price.... Right after I cleaned it :grumpy:
Yes I drink milk, need that calcium though...

Funny how things work, you'd think that in Japan anime would be cheap but it's not looking at it from a US perspective. Kinda amusing actually....
I guess if we got the stuff locally printed (Which we can) it would be a load cheaper. However the anime/manga community is still small here so I don't really see it happening. Especially since Animax didn't do too well here.

I guess CR has the better deals for subscription services too just from what I've seen too

I can consider myself lucky to live in a country where anime is a big thing. Again, anime here in Italy is pretty much worshipped. Unfortunately, where I live, there's still the common belief that cartoons are primally for young people. I think that's why, despite being dubbed, Attack On Titan, Code Geass, and similar shows haven't been aired on Italian TV yet. Then again... Berserk and Gurren Lagann have both been dubbed in Italian and shown on TV... At late night.

Let's just say it, here in Italy we know and love our anime. Hell, this is pretty much your average Italian's reaction to anime (just replace the word "chocolate" with "anime"). ;)
And damn, they actually made an Italian dub of Sword Art Online?! If so... I'm off to watch it! Still waiting for an Italian dub of Kill la Kill, though, and - God permit - a full Italian dubbing of both seasons of High School DxD, as well as the upcoming 3rd season. At least DxD's manga adaptation was localized. :3

It'd be pretty funny to see and hear DxD in Italian

Maybe I'll show it to my Cousin's wife, of whom I assume hasn't seen Anime before and happens to be Italian, now that will be quite entertaining :D

That belief is everywhere still. The other day during a break in lectures, I merely mentioned that I still watch cartoons (Ie Regular Show, Gumball, Adventure Time) and people give you that stare like .... Then there's the others that think you're cool (because they know what's up) and when you say that you watch anime they see you as a legend. Different strokes for different folks it seems.

In South Africa I can kinda understand why it's not big due to accessibility, cost and also we have too much of a taste in things from USA and some Euro tid bits.

Well this article explains why it's so expensive.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2012-03-07

Simply it HAS to be that expensive, and lower prices in the past didn't work too well. Basically everyone already interested in buying the show is already doing so, they have an inelastic demand for anime. If they lower the price the show can become unprofitable for the company putting out the discs.

Ironically enough the same thing happened here as I said earlier, lower prices didn't exactly increase sales much. Like Geneon when they were around sold their box sets for $200 (For two cour shows-back when that was WAY more common), and they moved at $200. When they lowered the price to what their competition charged for box sets (i.e. a considerable discount compared to the singles), sales didn't increase very much for them.

Back in the day 10,000 units could be bad, now it's a struggle for a show to hit that in its entire shelf life.

If only there was a flat-stare smiley(like this... =_=) here.

And how much are you looking forward to in regards to the Rugby World Cup? And do you think someone will have a go at a rugby manga or anime that'll help promote the event and the sport when it comes to Japan in 2019? As for sports anime, I look forward to seeing more Baby Steps(tennis anime) later this year.

I got the impression from the press release I read that it was a part of a global re-release cycle, so there may be hope yet.

Sadly I can't find the release...
Not sure about global, but FUNimation rescued The Vision of Escaflowne along with some other Sunrise anime Bandai Entertainment had (Before they exited the R1 industry due to orders from Bandai Visual in Japan) back in summer 2013, and we should finally see it hit later this year.

(The reason why it's taking so long is because they hadn't received the materials for many shows yet, the approval process for extras and stuff was taking a while. The same goes for Sentai Filmworks who also rescued some Sunrise anime Bandai Entertainment had at the same time (All this stuff was announced at the same exact con), such as The Big O and Infinite Ryvius.)

Personally I think Issei should refer to Rocco Siffredi at least once in the Italian dub. Bonus points if he's talking with either Rias or Akeno! Funny thing is, Asia shares her name and surname with a famous Italian actress. X)

Remember the "Morning Rescue" commercials?

Can you imagine someone doing an announcement along those lines when a title that was released in the NA market gets it's license rescued?:D

I checked out the article earlier. It makes sense when you put it all together. Guess it's just one of those things which have to function in a weird way. Then again, when you think about the amount of work put in to actually make an anime, kinda seems worth it I guess.

I'm not a Rugby guy  (Used to be a WRC nut) though I may check out the opening and the final. There's a few talented chaps here when it comes to Comics and even Manga so I heard, so I think someone may come up with something for all I know, getting it to spread though is the real mission at hand.

In other news, I dun went and binge watched High School of The Dead today, good thing I had nothing to do. Pretty much my first time binge watching a series that got me hooked but onto my thoughts though.

Honestly before I even started watching, I just expected this show to be fanservice to the max and no proper plot. However, I was quite surprised after the 1st episode. The pacing is 0-100 quick, emotions and human behaviour under fear and terror were captured quite well, the content of the show is well thought out, well written and there wasn't a moment where I had to pause and try to think about what's going on.

The things I didn't like though we're #1 in some instances the blatant Fanservice (Ms Shizuka..."boing" "boing") #2 Despite it being only 12 episodes, it needed more episodes to explain more of the story like how did the virus spread and yada yada #3 My counter to #2 is that it ended hinting a 2nd season leaving a lot unexplained which annoyed me because what if it doesn't come?

All in all, a good watch, I liked it very much!👍 deserves a 2nd season

I think I've fallen in love with Saeko..... As a BA character :D

Told you: people often dismiss Highschool of the Dead as merely a fanservice-laden show with a flimsy plot, but it's nothing like that: it's dark, morbid, and surprisingly realistic. And yes, not gonna lie, Saeko is really smokin' hot.

I fear, however, that there probably won't be a second season: and to make things worse, the original manga is on hiatus. But don't panic: HsOTD's author, Shouji Sato, is working on another manga, Triage X, which will get an anime adaptation this Spring!

I gave that show a 2/10. I didn't like it, and I don't understand why others do like it (despite some points above). Because zombies?

That's the thing with fanservice, it's ok but if it gets in the way and it becomes a bit too much and blatant then it gets annoying. However,

I burst out into laughter when I saw the action scene where the gang was cornered and Takashi had to use Rei's gun while Saeko was on the attack. That was some pretty funny fanservice action. At the same time though, that scene was pretty epic and choreographed

I looked it up now and it's sad really :( could have really done with a season 2. Oh well, all good things must come to end sometime. I just hate it when a series ends and it's like "Read the manga".... Much like Tenjou Tenge

I'd say it's not for everyone to watch. It's one of those addictive popcorn shows where you turn off your mind and just see "things" with their own dedicated physics engines:lol: Plus the fanservice and violence would throw people off.

Returning to an older post of yours, @TayeezSA...

I bet she's going to be startled by the massive fanservice. However, unlike with HsOTD, DxD's fanservice feels much less, you know... Gratuitous. It shows a greater degree of nudity, yes, but it's not too over-the top unlike with Highschool of the Dead. Funnily enough, High School DxD and Highschool of the Dead are often confused with one another! I mean, I still remember when my parents wanted to buy me volume 7 of DxD's manga adaptation, but they bought me volume 7 of Highschool of the Dead. That was a lucky accident. X)

Still, as I said earlier, if a DxD Italian dub becomes reality, Rocco Siffredi himself should be the advertiser, and not just be referred to during the series! The problem is, Rocco's currently taking part in a reality show and at worst he won't be available until April. Then again... You need much more time than a few months to make a good dub. XD
I still remember when Siffredi has done an ad for a brand of packed potato chips. This ad still airs from time to time here in Italy.

OK, let's avoid going way too off-topic here... A few days ago I've began watching Gurren Lagann. I'm just 2 episodes in and... HOLY 🤬 IS IT AWESOME.

I forgot about that post:lol:

She may be startled but then after sometime she'll laugh at it:D. I found DxD to be worse mostly because of the nudity and instances like Akeno in the 2nd season with her "Dragon power calming abilities":odd:. In HsOTD though with its physics engines , it felt a bit calmer for me but the fanservice was still mass.

You have some really understanding parents for them to know you watch that show and even get the Manga for you  If my Queen saw me watching DxD I'd be getting weird stares and comments of "So this is what you waste the internet I pay for on?"

In other news, I think I'm gonna rewatch The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya since I'm older and much smarter than when I first saw it. Next week though, I need a break...

To be honest... This was my parents' reaction when I introduced them to High School DxD. They didn't go "Aw heck no, man, that's really perverted!", oh no, they went more in the lines of this:

Man, how I love my parents. ^^

Akeno in the 2nd season with her "Dragon power calming abilities":odd:

That scene... Just... That scene... Bow chicka bow wow. :P

The trouble with fanservice is that it cheapens a work and limits its audience, even if its very gratuity means it doesn't tend to have a great deal of effect on a work's actual quality. How much of a problem it is varies from work to work.

In Cowboy Bebop's case, it has very little effect. Faye Valentine is sexualised because she's meant to be the sexy femme fatale. It's a well established movie trope that forms a part of Cowboy Bebop's larger network of pastiches. It fits, some people wont like it, but they're outliers. Most people will accept it as just being a part of the setting.

On the other hand, a show like Haruhi Suzumiya is basically ruined by its fanservice. It creeps most people out and turns what would have been an entertaining if flawed high school comedy with fantasy and sci-fi elements into some weird nerd thing your friends and family wont like, and that you'll find yourself fed up having to justify both to yourself and others why you like.

I agree with this statement. To be fair, I was originally set a little off when I first saw a few screencaps of shows like Kill la Kill and High School DxD. These screencaps were on the more fanservice-heavy parts of the show, and that kind of bugged me before I started truly watching these two shows and subsequently loving them. I swear I even thought Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt was a hentai when I first saw its name!

That last one's an easy mistake to make. I fairly quickly worked out it wasn't, as everyone I know who's a fan of Panty & Stocking is a woman, and only some of them are gay.

Overall, if an anime passes a certain level of smuttiness I'll tell people not to watch it. Most people dislike it. Same with most works to be honest, but when it's in an unusual or unpopular genre or medium this factor gets intensified.

In general I dislike fanservice*, but I'm prepared to overlook it if the rest of a work is good enough. Its arbitrary nature makes that fairly easy.

Anyone else get tempted to use subtitles on what they watch? Not on short videos but on TV shows, movies, or games that are in English. After watching anime it's starting to get a little harder to watch the things I've listed without subtitles. As if it's too laborious to watch something without subtitles.

Nope. Can't stand subtitles on English TV and I can barely put up with them in video games. Even when they occasionally prove helpful. More of a distraction than a translation aid.

I looked it up now and it's sad really :( could have really done with a season 2. Oh well, all good things must come to end sometime. I just hate it when a series ends and it's like "Read the manga".... Much like Tenjou Tenge
Unfortunately that's how most anime adaptations are. They're interested in quickly boosting sales of the source material, and moving onto the next series to advertise. Oh so many series that are forever incomplete or will never receive an anime adaptation.

Do you feel we should, for the most part, no longer engage with a show once we've gained enough interest to seek the manga in that case?

Aldnoah.Zero 19...
Probably not gonna say much this time around. Wished I kept track of my previous ones though...

The Martians have actually started to collaborate, instead of sending only one guy to fight. Now something to look forward to next time around.
Another thing to note is that Asseylum remembers hanging out with a boy back on Earth looking at birds. This is just one step for Asseylum to remember everything. Know what that means? Catastrophe for everybody. Asseylum waking up and he remembering everything will push this show to a very nice point, something S2 pretty much needs right now. I wonder how she'll react to the current state of affairs (the marriage proclamation)?
