Living the thug life.

Okay, I got a question. I want to start watching Anime. Where should I start that isn't Dragon Ball Z or Bleach (Two Animes I enjoy)?

"Cowboy Bebop is excellent," I said as if I was the only person in this thread recommending it.

Azumanga Daiou is also a good watch if you want some light-hearted comedy slash slice-of-life; Nichijou is what Azumanga probably would have been if it was made by Monty Python instead of Kiyohiko Azuma.

Most stuff by Gainax is great (Evangelion, Abenobashi, TTGL, PSG, etc.) if you don't mind a grand finale that makes less sense than a Dali painting. Kill La Kill is excellent, and its ending does make sense despite having been made by a bunch of former Gainax employees.

Then there's Puella Magi Madoka Magica:

It's a lovely magical girl anime in which the main character learns a lesson from her friend on the best way to get ahead in life.

Stop. Just stop.
Lesbians and evil bunnies don't make a good anime. Not saying anything about Madoka Magica btw.

Seriously, Madoka Magica is anything but terrible. However, it is not something you want to start with. No spoilers, but it is very different from any other magical girl show out there.

Yeah it's more of deconstruction of magical girls.

How To Reach Enlightenment In 4 Hours or Less.

This show has a crap ton of undertones and allusions

I'll say it again, Madoka Magica is basically the Magical Girl genre's own Neon Genesis Evangelion. There's the dub in my home language on YouTube, but I'm very reluctant to watch it. I don't want to cry myself to sleep! XD

Every time you post spoilers for Madoka Magica, Kaworu kills a kitten.

Seriously, just do everything you can to convince people to watch it because it's a masterpiece without spoiling the entire plot.

Are you people really that incompetent?

I suggest either getting the Grisaia no Kajitsu VN or the anime version.

Now that you've reminded me, you know what else I didn't like about the anime? You only get to see less than half of everybody's character. Can't help it though, they have to blow through so much content a lot of stuff was cut out. Still sucks though. :grumpy:

In the anime, Yuuji's always going "Oh! What's wrong?!" or "I see" all the time, and he was almost always getting stuff done or reading. He was obedient and straight-up with no drama in between. That's a part of him, but the ratio of that to his philosophical monologues and sarcastic jokes throw off what his character is really like. When things happen, he just makes a few calls and a whole team assembles like he's the boss. That isn't even the case. No flak, no persuading, nothing.

Same could be said about all the others.

Makina kept all her blunt lines, but her sarcastic observant side was left out.

Sachi was only given her good-girl syndrome, but we got no impression she was able to burn others.

Michiru's tsundere frequency was severely toned down. She was way less annoying in the show.

Yumiko- forget Sakaki "I bought this gun on the INTERNET" Yumiko  We didn't get enough dere from her. It was all cool-headed girl with her.

Amane kept all supervisory traits, but the intensity of her guilt was lacking. Most of her character traits got transferred over so it wasn't too bad.

If the show was stretched to 24 episodes and didn't cover all the material, it wouldn't have been as bad. They could've included more silly moments in the common route, like when Makina and Sachi drag Yuuji along to find a way to scare the pants off Yumiko.

Here's one that stuck out form the interview:

Music tends to trend in cycles, so I thought in the world of Macross Plus the trend would probably be two cycles ahead of the current trend. I kept what I thought would still be a part of music in that era, as well as adding bits from here and there when I started making the music. I also wanted to “brainwash” listeners, so I put a lot of reverb on the low ranges of the beat and looped sections which I thought would create an uneasy feeling. I also added reverb to sections, like in church music when the sound of an organ will make you feel like there was a light shining down from the sky making you acknowledge and subject to a divine presence.

Now that I look back on it I probably overdid it a little bit. [laughs] Back then I didn’t know how to control myself very well, so I did everything I could to make the music suggestive and hypnotic because in my mind I was really trying to make a sonic weapon. It was only afterwards when I started to receive feedback from fans of the series who said things like, “I heard that song, joined the Air Force and went to Iraq” or “I contemplated suicide while listening to Sharon Apple,” when I noticed the effect music has on people and became afraid of myself and the power of sound.

I need to sample this soundtrack right about meow.

Here's a playlist to brainwash yourself with. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuXk2dRdKiPwo_MmYPE0e7YfSUqYjoJnF

edit: And naturally, I can't find stuff on Youtube since whomever it is put copyright claims on most Macross music.

FLCL is perfect, but not a great place to start. The surrealism puts a lot of people off.

Studio Ghibli and Cowboy Bebop are generally the best starting points.

Do all of them have 18+ content?

Unfortunately yes, but did you also notice there was essentially none of it in the anime? It's sterilized.

edit: Found another neat bit in that interview.

Yoko Kanno
I believe there is a big difference between Japanese anime music and Hollywood film music. Hollywood needs its music to be background music which assists in the climax, but anime music is required to become a part of the film – and add to the emotions of the scene and the characters. Whether it’s climactic or not is simply a byproduct and not the goal.

I felt background scores in both anime and film had the same mission, but now that she mentions it, it might explain why the soundtrack in films tend to stay on a lower profile than that in anime.

Yeah because a big part of Grisaia is the story. You can't have hentai in a good story because people don't watch porn for the plot.
