Yeah . . . I'm not saying Saved by the Bell is bad; in fact it would be much, much better than just about everything that is on the Sunday night lineup. I would just rather prefer CTN putting Rurouni Kenshin back on, instead of adding a new show.

I thought Adult Swim was mostly Anime and some other cartoon related stuff but Saved by the Bell? Thats an odd choice... (I grew up watching it though)

I went to my cousins house and watched the recent late night stuff and well... What the hell happened? I like Aqua Teen HF and Robot Chicken and that Bird Attorney thing but... Seriously every other show is the pits...👎

BTW watching Kare Kano nowadays... Good God! I like High School Drama!:ouch: But it is quite nostalgic though... Went through a lot of that stuff in middle school... (Went to a all-guy high school which blowed) Oddly enough all those steriotypical characters all existed in the class room... Not to mention the school events lol...

The Adult Swim lineup is odd. They can't seem to decide on one lineup and seemingly have been changing it up a bunch as of late. But I am glad that they have decided to put Trigun back on. It is a definite welcome! 👍 Go figure!

I really need to pay attention and watch Champloo all the way through the next time they show it. I have already seen the series, but I would like to catch the episodes in order and in relatively short time.

I wanted to bring up this subject, then I noticed a Macross theard... so once I knew there were anime fans here, it was on.

So I ask you,

Who watches anime?

I certainly do. I been a fan of anime for years and years but lost touch of it all while i was at college and work. I must thank Swift and Boundary Layer for putting me back on track

Kent
What animes do you like?

Well back in the day when i lived in London (11 years ago) and we had the sci-fi channel on sky (used to be so much better than it is now) A strange program caught my eye. It was The Guyver. As i understand it this was not an incredibly popular anime and was shot down after only 12 episodes which is a real shame as the plot was left wide open and ended on a really bad part. This series got me hooked. Every sunday night i would sneak downstairs (bearing in mind i was 10/11 years old) and put the various anime movies on. Things such as fist of the north star, venus wars, gogo13, crying freeman, 3x3 eyes, vampire hunter D etc etc These have always been my favorites and then i saw Akira which was just jaw dropingly good! After that i kinda went downhill as i got involved in school more, going out with friends took priority and i was too tired to wake up at 1am and sneak downstairs.

9 years later - A guy finds GTPlanet and signs up but still it is not untill a year later that he find this thread! Well im here now so its all good.

As for what im watching now, Well i finished Initial D (was entertaining but thats about it - no im not an Initial D Fanboy!) and also NGE which was Boundary Layers reccomendtion and i loved it! Im halfway through Kenshin at the moment and loving it and have gundam Seed & Gundam Seed Destiny downloading right now. Also RahXephon looks to be on my hit list as im a sucker for Mech and Bio Armour anime!

Kent
Are you into anything else directly related to anime?

Well if you mean directly related as in they are both drawn then im a massive massive Transformers fan!

Kent
What is your fav. anime series?

Err well i dont have a favorite but the Guyver will always have its special place as its responsible for my anime addiction

Kent
What is your fav. anime movie?

Akira wins becuase its amazing to watch.

Kent

You should definitely watch Trigun! Its very good!

Have you seen Cowboy Bebop? Its another very good one.

Samurai Champloo is another very good one. I just finished watching it on the Cartoon Network and liked it a lot; I just need to watch it again to catch a couple things I missed.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a very good one. I've been watching it on CTN since they have finally shown it; though if I ever took the time, I could just watch it on DVD, as I own the series.

You picked a good one in Rurouni Kenshin. It is a very good series. Have you seen the Samurai X OVAs (related to RK)? The production quality is absolutely outstanding.

Oh, and welcome to The General Anime Thread! Definitely keep posting! 👍

Wow specialized! Nice to meet you.

The Guyver.
Awesome concept and well done as an anime (although older, it still kicked ass). It was one of the earlier animes for me as well. :D

As for the rest of what you've said... 👍
Especially about Akira.
Akira is one of my favorite movies ever made- partly because of the anime elements and mostly because of the story between tetsuo and kaneda. :(
(I'm an older brother and my only brother and I are very close)
(and yes I know they aren't real brothers in the movie  )

Anyway, it's nice to have you come in and find the anime thread.
Keep on posting and we will keep on responding. :D

Until next time,

Thanks for the warm welcome people.

@ Kent...WOW another human being who has actually seen the Guyver series. I think im the only person in england who even knows its exists! It would seem that you are into the "old animes" too like myself. Ive sent you a PM with my aim address so we can possibly have a chat.

@ VashTheStampede... thanks for the reccomendations however im a little hesitant to watch the one which has been cartoon network because i like "darker" anime. Thanks for the heads up about the OVA, i was told yesterday about these and was a little annoyed that i have to watch these to find out about kenshins cheek scar and the grave he visits in Kyoto :grumpy:

Anime seems to have changed since the first time i watched it all those years ago. Probably because i mainly watching animated movies like those mentioned above but im into things like Ghost in a shell. I remember anime being a little more raw than it is now. NGE is the first anime so far to capture the old raw style of anime that i remember. Kenshin although a great anime still lacks something. I cant place my finger on it but it just kinda feels empty in places.

Anyhoo, i will keep popping my head in to say hi and update you on my latest anime addictions

Well, :sly:
I've added to the rep of VashtheStampede and Specialized for replies 2934 and 2935 (by using the little red check at the top right of each post you can check your own rep and give rep points to others... Giving rep doesn't lower your own rep either).

Both posts were just what I like to see in this thread. 👍

Regarding the Guyver.
When I rented the show I didn't expect much. However, in the first episode they gave a nice little background story of how this suit was made as the ultimate predator and I think it appeared on earth during the time of the dinosaurs.

I don't remember the story too well because it has been so long.
I do remember that the Guyver had some bad ass abilities and awesome weapons (especially those blades off the elbows). :dopey:

Also, specialized,
NGE is kind of old believe it or not (not all that old though).
That may be why you get the old vibe off it.
Think NGE was produced in 1994.
That makes it nearly 13 years old.

Still, NGE is one of my favs (easily too).
Only a handful of shows have captured my attention like NGE simply because I'm tired of seeing shows that are all eye-candy and nothing more.

Don't get me wrong, I love some good new-age anime with great style, production quality, and awesome art.
However, I really love shows that can do that while producing a great story that will tie you down emotionally and take you for a ride.
NGE and Cowboy Bebop are perfect examples of that. 👍
I also feel like there are others out there that achieve that but sometimes it just isn't as pure as what is seen in those two.

For example, Full Metal Alchemist is amazing.
The idea of "alchemy" as they use it is enough to base a series on by itself.
Then add to that how the mother dies + brother is taken by demons & given back only after older bro sacrifices an arm and leg on the spot just to get back little bros soul and not the body to go with it! ... Talk about starting a story up with a bang. :scared:

Then from there the story gets even better in terms of character development because of how they depict Ed and Al growing and dealing with their problems (all the while leaning on "mom's death and the incident").
Once again, my relationship with my little brother comes into play, but none the less it is easy to understand why the basic premise of this story can be so enthralling.

Sadly though, sometimes I feel like the show sells itself short by attempting to create an all-age-acceptable anime.

Luckily they never stick with that and usually the show ends up on the extremely dark side of "what's in the afterlife, why do we die, why can't we change death, what's waiting for us on the other side, and worst (or best) of all... What kinds of monsters and demons are playing games with the lives and deaths of humans throughout the world"?????
(lots of questions I know)

In any case, I've done too much typing already this morning and I've still gotta run off to school.
So, until next time,

Cutting a long story short......

The guyver is a bio booster armour that interacts with the host increasing all abilities buy 100x. It was created by an unknown group of aliens who were at war and were manufacturing biological weapons. all existence on life was the trial and error of these aliens research, dinosaurs, cats, dogs, fish etc were all takes at creating the perfect weapon. Humans were therefore created as the ultimate biological weapon. They gave humans an ability to transform into a monster (Zoanoids) but came to the conclusion that they wanted even more power and created the Guyver armour.

Without warning the aliens just left earth one day never to be seen again.

Fast forward a few million years to today and a Syndicate called Chronos have learnt how to make zoanoids again and found 3 guyver armour packs which are then stolen and end up in the hands of 3 people. One of these people being the protagonist of the show.

Its a good series but ends with a bit of a bump unfortunately and there is so much more they could have done. I recently found out that they have actually remade the show but still seems they have not extended past where the original series ends.

I will be sure to check out some of the anime that you mentioned kent and i didnt realise that NGE was that old. Time sure flys by!

I wanted to get Kare Kano but it sounds like a filipino food Kare Kare

well we call curry rice.. kare rice... so... thats that too I guess:)

Speaking of NGE... Gainax sure changed much from those days... Still has good shows.. but made those not so great stuff that sell well... Mahoro... and that wierd maid thing thats on their site is just:crazy:
I like Diebuster though...

New shows....... Don't watch Burst Angel ever!! It tries a Bebob while failing miserably... I fell asleep watching it... And I wasn't even tired....
FMA is good but... tiresome with those not so funny comedy parts... New anime now a days do too much of that... Forced comedy... Another example would be Peace Maker... Mixing serious elements with comical elements should be done like Bebop...

Now Arz. Soma is a well done series... The main guy is an anti-hero... but not like those arrogant ones... he has a reason for being what he is... A very tragic story with perfect pacing... I tried to rewatch the series a couple times but cannot face the second to last episode cause its painful (in a good way)... I stop there every time...

I enjoy Lain too.. And Memories will always be something special... (especially Magnetic Rose)...

I have Appleseed which isn't perfect in its storylines cause the original manga carries too much info for a movie... The characters aren't fleshed out enough... And quite frankly... full 3D would have been better than 3D Cell Shading... 3D Cell shading just has too much graphical quirks for a movie...

Speaking of full 3D.... Whos gonna buy FF:AC? I already watched it using other means but... I think I'm buying it... not sure yet...

I would definitely give Trigun a chance then. It takes a turn for a darker side a little before half way through the series. It is good stuff!

The Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) OVAs are much, much darker than the RK series. You should immediately notice the much darker tone. I would definitely recommend watching them. I can't really say enough on how well done they are.

I definitely should have recommended to you Full Metal Alchemist, though Kent beat me to it. I've always felt that it has had a darkness to it and that the story would continue to keep getting darker and darker. Having watched all of the series on Cartoon Network, it definitely proved me right.

And just because the shows are on Cartoon Network doesn't mean they aren't dark. Trigun, Rurouni Kenshin, and Full Metal Alchemist have all been on Cartoon Network, as has Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Champloo has some dark moments, but it did not give me the feeling it would continue to be that way or be a constant reoccurrance. Still though, Champloo is a quality anime. Bebop is a classic and a must for any anime watcher.

Actually I bought Final Fantasy VII Advent Children today. I picked it up at Wal-Mart for like $18, though I have yet to watch it and won't be able to get to it until Thursday at the earliest. I have a test tomorrow that I need to be studying for right now and a lab report due on Thursday, so I have to get all of that done. But come Thursday, if I think about it I will watch it. I would definitely recommend going to Best Buy to pick up FFVIIAC though, as it on sale for like $15. I went by BB today, but couldn't seem to find it. Must have overlooked it or they forgot to put it on the shelf or something, but BB should have it.

Yea i was told about this a couple of days ago. They are working there way on to my computer via ahem "witchcraft" and am looking forward to it

Yea thats my bad, im not sure where your from (i assume america?) but the cartoon network over here (althoug i dont watch it hardly) just shows countless episides of Dragon Ball Z which i HATE with a passion and Power Puff Girls. Its pretty lame to be honest and i still havnt managed to find a channel on TV which shows any anime that tickles my fancy, guess i will have to just stick with my trusty computer and "witchcraft"

"Witchcraft" eh? Can't say I'm at all familiar with it.

I had just assumed Cartoon Network was the same the world over. Maybe it isn't. But Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, Full Metal Alchemist, Bebop, Champloo, and NGE, among others have all been on Cartoon Network. Though they are specifically on a block called Adult Swim, which only airs during the later parts of the night, i.e. where I'm at it starts at 22:00 (well I think actually 21:30 now, as they have changed the schedule a bunch lately). Cartoon Network also shows DBZ among a bunch of other shows. To be honest, other than Adult Swim, I rarely catch any of the other programming, as it is in general more focused towards younger audiences. Occassionally I'll catch an episode of Naruto.

Just wanted to talk about some of the Adult Swim I've caught tonight. :p

Full Metal Alchemist: (spoilers)
Re-runs.
Ed and Al are living with the crazy Alchemist who previously killed the wife in a failed transmutation to create a chimera has now tried again with his daughter and dog.
Ed and Al try but fail to save her, proceed to beat "dad" down until the military shows up for the cover-up.
Everyone leaves, little-girl-chimera escapes via Ed only to die at the hands of "Scar."
Very rough episode to watch, very intense and suprisingly awesome for such an early episode in the series. 👍 👍

Eureka 7: (no spoilers)
"new"
Just about the most fun I've had with anime in a long time.
Great stuff, I see nothing but potential. 👍 👍
(air surfing mechs piloted by smugglers and "awesome characters"). * "family site language"

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex- 2nd Gig...
(couldn't they come up with a better name than that! :boggled: )
Suprisingly, this was an awesome episode. 👍
The "message" was expressed and at the same time there was some kick-butt action. :p

Unfortunately (in my opinion), this is where it ends.
Re-runs of Samurai Champloo just didn't do it for me. :indiff:
Been there done that.

Catch you all next time,

I hated that episode. So cruel. Which makes it one of my best picks... I don't think any other episode had connected the emotions of the two kids and the viewer together... I could literally feel the pain and dispair they went through. I guess I have a weak heart for little kids even if they are fictional... :(

Well I didn't watch FMA or Champloo tonight; having seen pretty much all the episodes of each, I didn't see the point in watching them tonight. But I did flip it over just to see which episode of FMA was on and that particular episode is a good one, though I didn't catch which episode of Champloo was on.

I haven't watched any of Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex - 2nd Gig at all really. I have caught an episode or two, but I have not consistently made an effort to watch it at all. After so many episodes of the story not progressing early on, I just got tired of not really learning anything new or seeing any questions I had answered.

Eureka 7 has been very good so far. It has had some great episodes and is just a fun anime to watch. The air surfing mechs are pretty neat and it is definitely something different. I have really enjoyed the series. All of the characters have come off as unique and interesting. This is the one series that I keep tuning into each week and I have yet to really be disappointed.

On a differnt topic, for the first time in a good while, I put GT4 into the PS2 and gave it a spin for a while tonight. I had forgotten how really great the game is and pretty much want to play it some more. It is a very nice break from the other games I have been playing.

And finally to follow up on a previous post of mine. I took the time yesterday to watch Final Fantasy VII:Advent Children. The animation is absolutely stunning. All of the fighting sequences were spectacular. I thought the story was good, even though I don't remember really any of the story from FFVII.

Sorry for the double post, but this one came in while I was making my first one. I really agree with you, though I did not hate the episode. I thought it was a very good one for the reasons you stated. It brought me into the anime and kept me wanting to watch.

I loved it actually...(that love/hate thing) I find it one of those episodes that is tough to watch again... Its like reliving the nightmares so to speak...:scared:

I agree with you that it is a hard episode to watch again because it is so dark and haunting, which is probably one of the reasons I did not continue watching the episode. That episode is a very sad episode, but does a wonderful job of keeping the audience interested in the series.

And your post isn't that great either . . . not too mention, it contributed absolutely nothing to the thread . . . 👎

See..neither did that...Because that could have been said in a PM..

BTW...

advent children gets worse the more you watch it..

it was ok the first time, like the fight scenes..

second time i thought it was well..kinda dumb..

but now it's just really lame, because all the stupid nonsensical parts stand out even more..

like the whole "I'M NOT CRYING" bit..
and the two assistants fighting with joz and the other guy, saying "Well i'm sorry to talk about your mother like that" "yeah your mom is great."..

that's soooo stupid...

And who the heck is Joz? I don't remember there being a Joz in the film, though I do remember a Loz. Why is the "I'm not crying" bit nonsenssical? It made sense to me. It showed that that particular character has some mental problems and further shows how absurd their idea of bringing their mother back is.

You also don't seem to get sarcasm do you? I don't remember if it was Reno or Rude who said it, but the whole "yeah your mom is great" was said in a sarcastic manner.

whatever the dummy's name was..

and if Loz was the one with the crying issue...why in the opening would he ask the other fairy if he was crying....for well..no reason..completely out of context...and 100% nonsensicle...

oh and PS...dunno if you remember the reno and rude part...but he says "yeah your mom is great"...pauses..then says "Wait...what am I saying" indicating it wasn't sarcasm
