Recently, the Anime News Network website posted a story about a group of people who have cars or motorcycles with anime-inspired designs and images meeting up at a track in Chiba prefecture. The details can be seen by clicking here.
ANN
apanese news blog Mantan Web has posted a gallery of pictures from a race track event for anime-inspired vehicles. The "Doki! Itasha Only Driving Meet" took place October 7 at the Minami Chiba Circuit in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture. The event was attended by about 50 unique cars and motorcycles who took turns racing around a 580-meter portion of the track.

The term "itasha" is a phrase coined by fans to resemble the Japanese colloquial term for "italian car" in which "ita" is short for "italia", combined with the Japanese "sha", which means "vehicle" or "car". The difference between the terms is that the fan-created "itasha" is made with the character "itai" or "to hurt" - in other words, cars that are so cute that it "hurts" to look at them.

While "itasha" are not a new phenomenon among Japanese fans, the meet in Ichihara was one of the first opportunities for drivers of "itasha" to race their vehicles on a legitimate race track. The organizers of the meet are planning to hold another event for drivers and fans in Fukushima Prefecture next spring.

To bump up the thread after a little inactivity - for those following the most recent fall season in Japan, what are your winners? Every season I always start with one or two big-name shows (Clannad, Shana II) and end up watching a lot more based on feedback from the anime community. So I thought I'd share my thoughts on some of them just in case anyone else is looking for some gems:

Minami-ke
: A slice of life comedy revolving around three sisters, in similar fashion to Azumanga or Lucky Star. It doesn't rely on wacky antics quite as much as the former or references quite as much as the latter, giving it the feel of a pretty realistic comedy. Kana, the middle-aged sister, admittedly is a very crazy and energetic clone almost like Tomo, but her way of thinking combined with Chiaki (little sister's) mix of sarcastic cynicism and naivety makes for some good comedy.

Plus, you get a Matrix camera effect in the first episode. Some great camera work for a slice of life.

(Gambling Apocalypse) Kaiji: A show with some odd (some say ugly) character designs, but beneath it all lies an engaging story about a group of delinquents (we're talking 100 of them) gathered into a gambling cruise led by the Yakuza as a last hope for them to escape debt. The human interaction caused by desperate people against each other allows for some great action and emotion, even in such a 'simple' game such as Restricted Rock-Paper-Scissors (you can only play each sign four times).

I'd liken it to Battle Royale (movie) without the physical death. Man, makes me want to start a forum game based on restricted RPS.

Myself;Yourself: Admittedly the most questionable of my three picks but for people who love visual novel adaptations - as always, this means harem-type shows - you'll eat up M;Y. This show has the advantage of having both comedy elements and foreshadowing towards a potentially dark past (and ending). The characters, although perhaps a bit cliche, are very likable in personality, and the show just has that feeling that it's more than it's parts. I'm keeping a close eye on it.

How about you all? :)

P.S. For those who were unable to see some great visual novel adaptations, Kanon is due to hit U.S. streets on New Year's, with Shuffle! following in Feburary. I reccomend both to fans who enjoy endearing female characters (the shows are technically harem, although they have surprising depth for such) and some interesting plot twists.

BR was very good( well the first movie) and the novels are very graphic. I almost bought the Ultimate Edition yesterday.

Sorry to bump it up again, but someone happen to watch the latest Naruto Shippuuden? There getting really good episodes now :D

Can't say that I've see it yet. We're up to about ep. 110-115 in the States(on Cartoon Network). But in case anyone asks you what happened, remember to use the Spoiler tags, OK? ^_^

And in other anime-related news...

ANN: 'American Otaking' Steve Pearl Passes Away
Anime News Network
Steve Pearl, the moderator of the rec.arts.anime.info newsgroup from its inception in 1993 until 2001, has passed away over the weekend. The rec.arts.anime newsgroups have been pivotal areas for discussion and news within the online English-speaking anime fandom since before the creation of the modern web browser. Pearl was also the author of the rec.arts.anime.misc list of frequently asked questions and the Anime/Manga Convention Guide. In 1992, he co-founded the Atlantic Anime Alliance, a social group of anime fans in the New York City area. He attended various Northeast anime conventions, including every Otakon from 1994 to 2000, as a fan guest of honor, and for a time, worked as a consultant for NuTech Digital.

In 1995, former Gainax president Toshio Okada — who is known in Japan as the Otaking, after the title of the highest level of otaku in Gainax's Otaku no Video anime — met Pearl at the Anime East convention. Okada then bestowed on him the title of the "American Otaking." Pearl had been suffering from diabetes for a number of years, and recently underwent a leg amputation.
He will be truly missed by the anime community, that's for sure.:(

hello everyone. First post here. Has anyone seen Toyko Underground. It pretty good. Its basically like heroes(people having extrodinary powers, while some use it for good and bad), but it came out before the tv show.

Hey all. What's up?
Been a while since I've been around here and thought I'd come back when I saw a picture just the other day... Took a screen cap of it and now I'm asking what you guys think...

Was the fourth hokage Naruto's father?

Good to see this thread alive. Haven't been able to say much because I watch all the cutting-edge stuff that may not be known by casual/non-BitTorrenting fans. (i.e. I download the latest fansubs, etc)

Can't say I've watched Naruto, but allow me to throw out some random off-topic series: my recommendation for anyone who's watching the latest anime via fansubs would be: the mindgame thriller Kaiji, the hilarious slice-of-life Minami-ke, and the two-toned dramatic and funny Myself;Yourself. Clannad, in the same vein as Kanon and AIR, is a solid bet as well. If you've heard of these,

Or perhaps, a show that more people have heard of, has anyone tried the second season of Shakugan no Shana? It seems like a show that would be popular, although a lot of people don't like the current season...

(Oh, oh, one more. I'm watching like 10 shows now. It's crazy. ARIA's an easy one to top it off though, a great relaxing little piece for when you're totally burnt out.)

Well, the next season of Naruto is a bit more Dramatic not very kiddish anymore which is good because he is growing up.

Has anyone here watched Gurren Lagann? Best new anime of '07 IMO.

Just started Bleach too, I'm on EP52 and I quite like it. 👍

I bet you get some kind of perverse kick out of spoiling things for people don't you? Stupid child.

Though that the entire season never ended and why would Ichigo die? since he is the main character. You would believe another post since the anime is still alive and kickin.

I am calm. I just simply hate it when people drop spoilers, whether fake or not.

:yuck: 08th MS Team was the beginning of the end. IMO, it was too cheesy, even for giant robots with light sabers.

I really enjoyed 0083. Probably my favorite of all the Gundam series although 08th MS was right behind. It's only been the more recent Gundam series that I haven't liked.

I thought the Full Vernium Gundam from 0083 was absolutely the coolest gundam ever. 👍

Every time I think about Gundam Wing, I want to gouge my eyes out. Once you see what real Gundam is, you will never go back.

The most ass kicking mobile suit ever is obviously the RX-93 Gundam.

I think some of the best designs come from special Gundam models and action figures that are not from the series such as the FIX series of figures.

One of the best Gundam pictures I have on my PC...

Guess which Gundam this is? :sly:

Btw, the one you called NU is the RX-93 as far as I can tell (but that pointy thing on one side might make it something else).

Yes, the RX-93 is the Nu Gundam, I didn't think I had to be very specific.

That's the RX-93 as well, Kent, without it's funnels.

Right on regarding the name (I wasn't in the know with the "Nu" term vs regular old RX-93).

None the less, I'm glad it didn't take long for anyone to figure out I had posted a rear view of the same gundam. :sly:

I just felt it was a much more appropriate picture being that you can really see how awesome it is in my picture compared to that stock MechHQ picture. :indiff:

Definately an awesome picture IMO. 👍
I've got a front view as well, I just figured the front view would make it way too easy to identify. :D

Probably the best images I have. Now looking at it, the Zaku is like a Ricer. It comes in various colors and weapons

For anyone interested...
Last night CN aired the first episode of Eureka 7. 👍
So here's your chance to catch the series from the begining if you didn't catch it on the first run through. Personally, I'll just be watching for anything I missed and sure enough, the one episode I remember missing was one of the best. :ouch:
Hope that means some of you will tune in for the show!

I also caught some of last night's episode and it reminded me why I enjoyed the series so much. There is great storytelling early in the series, some added humor, and some good to great action sequences.

Early in the series, there is a good amounts of mystery revolving around Renton, why he always "talks" to his sister, Eureka, many of the characters on the big ship in Kent's post, Renton's father, etc, etc, etc.

I may have to take the time and finally watch all of the series. 👍
