While I find the new Nightwish album very good, I found only parts of Tarja's album worthwhile. She does a cover of Alice Cooper's Poison, though.

If you mean older as in pre-2003, then I'd have to agree. Funny how commercial success usually equals altered style and crappy result.

Oh, me too. I just like the older Nightwish better.

I've heard many people say this, so I guess I'm weird then. I couldn't stand Nightwish before the new singer. I think it's awesome the operatic vocals aren't there as much. It always made Nightwish feel gimmicky.

How does it make them sound gimmicky? It's not like they all of a sudden switched to a classicly trained operatic singer to be cool. They started out like that back in the early 90s.

I kind of like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Opeth and so on..

Metal is not the only kind of music I listen to though.

I don't know.. It's gimmicky enough in metal to have a female singer and for her to be singing opera just seemed to add the the gimmickyness. it seemed to be like they could say "HEY! Come to our show we got an opera singer!" Meh, maybe it's I just really don't like symphonic metal too much.

How is having a female singer a gimmick? If anything, I would rather hear an operatic singer. It's nice change of pace from ever.other.band. that has the generic cookie monster growls and grunts.

I'm not saying the fact alone is gimmicky.. It's just so out of the norm that the band could cling to that as a claim to fame. I mean, would Lacuna Coil be famous without christina?

So you want everyone to sound the same? You must like mtv.

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in all of you. The new Opeth album is out and no one has drooled over it yet.

well.... kinda. But I half expected multiple fanboys to come shouting "OMG Opeth album is teh awesome!!1!" or something

OMFG I didn't know that!!

Though I honestly didn't know it was out. I actually have "When" stuck in my head at this very moment. Definitely one of my favorite bands.

I need a little help. I've been searching for a song for quite some time now and it's killing me that I can't find it.

The song itself starts out as a Christmas carol then turns into metal. Then a weird voice starts singing about something dealing with snowmen. The song title has to be something along the lines of the abominable snowman, but I'm having no luck finding information on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried Within Temptation - Gothic Christmas?

In other news, Deicide released a new album, called Till Death Do Us Part. Anyone heard it yet?

I just did. If you like classic Deicide (Trifixion and the like) you'll probably feel a bit let down. Glen Benton's voice, although highly grumbly, has almost always been understandable... not anymore. The instruments in the classic era were very clean cut as well... now it's all noise. And no one song is different to the rest.

Speaking of grind...

Opeth - Watershed

Well... I have to admit it's what I expected it to be, which is amazingly awesome. The first song (Coil) had me uttering WTF over and over again, especially because it has a couple of Opeth firsts: female vocals and synths. But they serve as an opening to the second song (Heir Apparent), which is a big

The album itself is a bit more grindish than the previous ones and the acoustic parts tend to be more distorted. Only seven tracks, and the last one isn't that big of a deal. Still, they continue with the 8-15 minute songs and mixing growling with normal singing with whispering.

Maybe one of the most anticipated albums for me this year, and it didn't disappoint in the least.

Good to hear. I was a bit worried how things would turn out after Martin Lopez and Peter Lindgren left the band. 👍

They're also touring Australia later this year to promote the album. Can't wait! :D

If anything detracts from the album is the fact that they found out people liked the changes from slow, acoustic music and soft vocals to strong, aggressive growling with heavy guitar and drums. Watershed does a lot of it; meaning that songs in previous albums usually started out strong, went into a soft point and ended up strong again. In Watershed, these changes are done many times within the song, so you get "strong-soft-strong-soft-soft-strong-strong-soft-strong"... the songs seem longer.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question and not at all in line with metal, but I recall reading that the title of Metallica's ninth effort is to be released today (I say it may not be metal as the last few albums have been more towards a hard rock vibe; the album is described as being "the missing link" between Justice and the Black Album), but I can't seem to be finding it anywhere (I can't even recall where I read it) nd I'm having internet conenction troubles, so most of my energy is focused on reasearching my HR essay. Anyone know what the title is?

Yep, it's on Wikipédia
