The map in Travian is based off of a coordinate plane. When you click the view map button, your village is in the center, and you can click on the arrows on the side to scroll around the map. The left arrow decreases the X coordinate, the right increases the X coordinate. The top arrow increases the Y coordinate, and the bottom one decreases the Y coordinate. Each square counts as 1 field in the game. A square that has a village on it will have 2 circular roads and a few buildings on the picture, and a square without a village will be green, or have a pond, or tree's.
You can do a mouse over on a village to see a little info about it, or you can click on a village to see lots of information on it.
