Chris Evans should immediately turn his hand to unfinished TG business. The P1/LaF/918 race springs to mind - but I think the very first thing he should do is try to drive a jet car in a straight line at 300mph.

He virtually did this on his TFI comeback show and had Jason Plato (as the 'Stink') drive a LaFerrari round but they could only get it to within a couple of tenths of the Pagani's time, albeit with minimal laps.

300mph Jet car/400mph dragster? Who's counting? As long as the parachute's like the one off the VW advert. :D
 
I think Chris could do a better job than most of the candidates mentioned up to this point, I think him, Coogan and Atkinson might be the way to go.

Well, it was a reference to what happened to Hammond when he drove the British land speed record (300.3mph) Vampire jet car...

Incidentally, Plato and Hamilton was one of the cringiest things I've ever seen.
 
I'm not disappointed by the decision to appoint Chris Evans as host at all. I am, however, disappointed at the amount of negativity surrounding the announcement from armchair fans who are still angered that Clarkson was dismissed in the first place.

All you need to ask yourself is: Could you see Top Gear continuing in its former guise in 10 years' time?

It's a great opportunity for the production team to be able to rekindle its former format of being both informative and mildly amusing; something that it most certainly lost in years gone by.
 
I think he's a good choice. It's a shame that the Clarkson/Hammond/May format ended as it did but it is what it is. I'd actually felt that the road trips were getting a little tired (although we've yet to see the last) so new life in the format will be good.

I agree, however having only having passing mention of the name as the actor, I can't bloody make up my mind on Evans (the radio presenter) without hearing some of him and make up my own mind.

At face value, however, the BBC was up 🤬 creek with Clarkson one way or another. They could have allowed him a free pass, in which case detractors would accuse the BBC of covering up a crime again to protect a presenter not so long after admitting that it covered up numerous crimes that a presenter did under the guise of a children's show, or they could have sacked him and allowed the inquiry to run its course and run the risk of losing May and Hammond, something that did happen.
 
...I must confess, only thing I know of Evans was when he did that Star in a reasonably priced car thingy back when. And only because of a rather funny anecdote he shared on the show.

From that super-brief showing, the impression I got was....

Run to the hills. TG is dead. Unless BBC finds two (or more) solid co-presenters who can build a great chemistry with one another, I'm not hanging around to see it crash and burn. :nervous:

I can't help if I can't stand Chris Evans, nor if I really enjoyed watching Clarkson, Hammond and May. The US show continued the format and it's not even comparable.. If someone asked me did I want to watch a car entertainment show hosted by Chris Evans I would say no thankyou, Top Gear or not.
 
The reality is that people will look at the first episode and automatically call on the negativity parade to blast the new hosts and the BBC whilst demanding Clarkson back and all that jazz.

Those people are idiots in my opinion. :crazy:

I'm willing to give the newcomers a chance because let's be honest, Top Gear wasn't conceived by Clarkson & Co, revamped to what we know it as by them yes, but not created by them.

I'll give them at least two seasons ( if the hate parade doesn't get it shut down before then.) to get to know each other, work out the bugs and develop their own identity for the acid test which will be the third season for me.

If it wipes out so badly that they do cancel it, I'm going to be there watching that bombshell drop for the last time. :(

I'll admit this though, Seeing the fallout from Clarkson's sacking by the die-hard fans of TG gave me more a reminder into what happens when you get too invested into a show as a fan and what dumb things can happen from it ( like sending threats to the very person who was punched. :rolleyes:).
 
Top Gear fans are as fickle as WWE fans.

Not a popular source of analogies, I know, but the similarities between WWE and Top Gear are striking. If you understand both.

Contrived spectacle for the purposes of entertainment.
Smacked in the face with we're not a car show / we're not a wrestling show.
Laugh at people who do like the nitty gritty of cars / wrestling.
Toilet humour from writers who think they know what's funny.
Super high production values masking poor content quality.
Fans who will explode when their darlings aren't seen as immutable.
They changed it, now it sucks.

There's nothing which would make this a winnable situation. It's lose-lose;

The show could not continue as it was.
Cancel the show permanently and there'd be uproar.
Recast the show and there is immediate uproar.

The number of people just looking for the first hint of an excuse to slate the BBC for sacking Clarkson is staggering. As if he is some kind of martyr.

I really don't think there's a viable comparison with Operation Yewtree stuff. It's more that the BBC had stated, publicly, on countless occasions "this is his last chance" rather than "let's not have another Jimmy Savile". But many people just want a witch hunt of the BBC; justified in some cases but not this one. They simply had no option this time.
 
I don't mind Chris Evans personally. There are much worse people to host a TV show.

I'll await the new series and at least give it a try. I am a little saddened that the Clarkson, Hammond & May era ended the way it did but nothing lasts forever.
 
Recently watched the first series of the Re-booted Top Gear from 2002.
Although I enjoyed them, they were far away from how good the show became.

And the last few series had become tired. So I am pleased that the show is being forced to relaunch itself - but I doubt fans will give it the time to grow and gel together.

And Clarkson, no doubt will get a huge deal to create his own car show.

So we've gone from a tired programme that was becoming a bit stale, to hopefully two refreshed and competing car programmes. Sounds good to me.

As for Chris Evans, it could go well. If it doesn't then he'll be fired and someone else will be given a chance.
 
Hmmm, Chris Evans....

He's probably a good choice, though I don't like him at all... The Big Breakfast, Radio 1 Breakfast show, TFI Friday, Radio 2 Breakfast show... I find them all surprisingly annoying thanks to his style... I didn't like it 20 years ago and if he's still doing things the same way on Top Gear it'll get really old, really quick.
 
Is Sue Perkins going to be the next presenter bombshell?

She's an Evans clone and shares 99.9999% of the DNA, the only difference being black hair.

Personally, I'd prefer Jodie Kidd or [fingers crossed] ex co-presenters Denise Van Outen, Kelly Brook or even Suzy Perry........must stop, getting carried away now.

She did do a bit of performance driving on Fifth Gear to test performance modifications, so you never know.
 
Evans? If this is combined with a complete change to the nature of the show, I'd give it a chance. If they just try to continue the same way with new presenters it will look silly and fail.
 
One man's desperation is another man's (or woman's :p) opportunity to live a dream.

I didn't see one criteria that should be mandatory, a flame suit. :sly:

Because as soon as that first episode ends, they'll definitely need it. ;)
 
I'm not ruining my tv career before its even started, or been thought about.

Seems like a good idea to me, it's a fairly fresh, clean start, rather than building a team from other well-known presenters - no trio of which I've seen suggested has fit as a team in my opinion.

Plus Evans went to great pains to point out that they're not necessarily looking for full-time presenters ala Hammond or May, maybe just people to do "bits".
