That "dog" was also 7th on the grid qualified by a driver I've never rated particularly highly. Good job by Schumacher but not really as impressive as calling the car a "dog" suggests, it was clearly a top-midfielder if not close to front-running pace.
Not to mention he binned it on the first lap of that race anyway (a wet race too, so much for the "Rain meister" :p). At his finest, eh? :p

Well, the Ferrari was a real dog, trust me, it's handling and reliability were poor, and the Williams and Benetton were for sure much better cars. But he took pole by over half a second. That's an achievement. Nevermind the race, I posted a qualifying video, not a race video :grumpy:

Speaking of the race:

I especially love how Panis would set FL around 2 seconds quicker, after someone else did. 👍

I watched that season live, so I do know. The Ferrari wasn't fastest, no, it was obviously behind the Williams and Benetton on outright pace, sometimes even the McLaren on a really bad day.
But it was still good enough to qualify top 10 and fight at the front for most races. This isn't the character of a terrible car, with the right driver its not that amazing it was put on pole - though as I said it was an impressive effort. Its just not "unbelievable".

The real issue Ferrari had in 1996 and early-1997 was reliability. Most races, it didn't matter what MS did, the car would usually give up on him.

People seem to forget that it wasn't just speed that made Williams dominant in the 90s - it was the incredible reliability record they held at the time. Its become normal for most of the cars to finish the race these days, but back then it was pretty much expected that at least 1 or 2 front-running cars would fail to finish and most of the midfield and backmarkers too.
Reliability for the most part has little to do with qualifying, so Ferrari were not so handicapped.

I personally think Michael has far better examples of his supreme talent at the time and I think too many people over-rate his ability in those years, particularly 1996.
From that season, I'd say Spain 1996 was one of his best wins ever.

Come on mate, just appreciate the brilliant job Schumacher did by putting a car on pole by over half a second, under normal qualifying conditions, and with the Williams and Benetton cars faster than it.

You may aswell close the thread after I post this vid, there is no match for Jean Ragnotti.

Ragnotti is Awesome. :D  I have NEVER seen anyone drive a front wheel powered car like that... ever til today. Him in the R5? 👍 :sly: Hell yes! :D --- Randy ;)

Not exactly the best video, but still great. The karussell is amazing.

Was just going to post this video... just incredible car control. Drifting a front engined/RWD car in the wet is one thing, drifting a single seater is quite another... awesome!

0:27 to 0:57, amazing stuff. Though the entire video is brilliant.

AND:

Pure brilliance

I do appreciate it. I just don't go OTT glorifying Schumacher's achievements by trying to make his machinery sound worse than it really was. And there are far more impressive examples out there of Schumacher's utter dominance.

Greg Murphy's 2003 Bathurst top 10 shootout lap is easily my favourite qualifying lap of all time. I watch it multiple times in the lead up to the Bathurst 1000 each year!

Nick Heidfeld's Goodwood hillclimb course record:

Probably could have gone quicker if the car hadn't spent most of the run on its undertray. In some ways it's a shame the F1 cars aren't allowed to be timed anymore, but if it all went wrong I doubt the event would be allowed to continue.

Having just seen this, I figured it was worthwhile bumping this thread.

Crazy.

Anybody who knows Thruxton and knows about supertouring will appreciate the bravery, commitment and control in Paul Radisich's overtake through Church.

Care to tell me what time I should look at. My internet is so slow, it would take about an hour to buffer that.

The best part starts around 3:30.
Narrow wet road with patches of ice, a wall on the inside and a 200ft drop on the outside :scared:
