So it starts the 20th of december, but how long does it usually last for you to be able to set a time? Only a month of practice! :( Anyone willing to get on some trainage?

That sounds like me. Hehehehe. I have work but its only from 10-5 M-R.

Well, me too! But when it comes down to it, I'll have to put my life (education thus career) on hold for around 8 months just for a chance.

See, March is almost midterms, around the time the finalist go to Orlando (maybe?) for the 'National Finals'. This is doable for a college student, and so is every part of the contest up to that point.

Taking a week, or longer, trip to Silverstone in the UK would be a deficit I wouldn't be able to make up. Being in a program that allows for no time being missed (all missed hours must be made up), a full week away from classes couldn't be made up. I would have to drop the program and hope they take me back for next fall semester... in September!

1. Silverstone Event (“Event”) 1.1. All National Final Winners will be notified in writing by the Promoter as soon as practicable after the National Final and invited to take part in the Event (up to a seven day event which will take place at Silverstone racing circuit in the UK during the period of April, 2011. National Final Winners must claim their prize within 48 hours of the notification.

Well, to be honest, I'll have to get up to speed to even be in contention this time. As Brock (Timeattack) pointed out earlier, I fully expect the U.S. iRacing aliens to be out in full force for this competition, and I really think the competition is going to be fierce. Dapper, EL_ZISSOU, Timeattack, drama-kyd, Z06fun and many others are going to be extremely tough. Sorry for leaving anyone out, and I'm sure there will be many new names and faces that will rise to the top this time around.

To be honest, I've got to agree with what you and Jerome were talking about, in terms of the amount of time people can and will spend on the competition. Some people are able to devote huge amounts of time while others aren't. When I met Bruno--the Canadian and overall North American winner of the TT demo--we were both curious about how much time we each had spent on the competition. I added it up in my head and I spent about 50 hours altogether on the demo. Bruno said he spent about the same amount of time. That's a lot of time to devote to a game. I'm sure not everyone was able or willing to spend that much time. So I do agree that maybe some type of time limit would be a good idea.

In any event, this is going to be a great competition, can't wait :)

Hey Carl!

Will be seeing you on the grid soon!!!

- Tz

Honestly if I make the top 128 in the western region, I'll consider it a success. Not expecting anything higher than that, which would be the cherry on top of my ice cream. :)

Yes, for those that can devote the time, good racing to you 👍

I'll give it a try, but in no way can I spend the hours the eventual winner and top drivers will have put in to be the quickest in the competition.

Besides; who's going to hire an out of shape almost 50 year old to drive their race car

See you on the middle of the leaderboard 👍

Why is there so little interest over there in North America about this?

I'll have to say that the only reason I bought a PS3 and a steering wheel is because of GT Academy and the chance to get a professional race driving contract with a European based motorsport team.

Otherwise GT4, the PS2 and a couple of PC-based racing games would've suited me (and plenty of others) just fine...

Well I'm so interested!! I just wish they gave more time to practice. I've never used a wheel, so this is gunna be tough.

What track do yall think it'll be. Top gear?

I think once the registrations begin, you'll see this thread grow. I still vote for it to be a sticky.
+1

It's so hard finding this thread with all the other ones complaining about something. Someone needs to fix the thread title as well. GT Academy is two words :sly:.

Get one as soon as possible and start practising on anything you can. I was the only one from my national final who didn't have a steering wheel prior to the Australiasian/European GT Academy Time Trial and I barely made it through to qualify (bar one person who made it through with a controller in New Zealand).

wow, nice one.. have fun guys and if not already, start to go to gym. :p
I don't think you've read the title properly. It says USA. Think about what you are asking.
Lol take it easy there dude. Timmpaq is one of the quickest guys from Finland and arguably the world - http://gtdb.net/?tt. He knows full well that this is U.S. only and he's only giving encouragement to anyone interested. Might be an idea to know who it is you're talking to before you type something out ;).

Some people seem to think that we can’t drive in America… which sucks…

Professionally, we aren’t well represented in major forms of Motorsports more recognized by people not from the US, so I guess it’s easy to understand why they feel the way they do. F1… No American driver, but I know several that could do it with great success. Just sucks to be labeled in the way we are knowing that it could be much different if some got the chance. Graham Rahal is a perfect example of a super talented American that can’t catch a break among so many others.

Give me any racing series... and there is an American that could be fan-freakin-tastic in it. I rally wish the USF1 team would have taken off, even if it was a backmarker, I'm willing to bet that with the correct driver lineup from the US, they would have turned heads.

I’m excited about GT Academy… I know several people from the online community that are excited about GT5 that will make noise, not only with this competition, but just with online as well. Not that I’m out to save America’s name or anything, but I think the thing I’m most excited about is proving that we have some wheelmen in the US. I'm willing to bet the US will be really well represented in GT5!

I think if Sony, PD and Nissan decide to hold a proper worldwide GT Academy we can all finally settle this pub debate for good. ;)

There is no need for Sony, or PD's intervention. 700pp Fuji is a World Event right now :)

I am afraid I can't be apart as I had finished skip barber racing school and have gotten up to the Koni Challenge series for a couple of events. I raced at Road America a few times as well as Mid-Ohio. I asked a long time ago about the GT academy, but that is okay, I just like playing the game.. and watching for new talent that would blow by me on a track any day.

I think for most karters and open wheel starts like skip barber, Formula BMW, Renault and such, I think for the younger people, you can still get into it even if you already race. I am not sure... I hope we can more details soon on this...

That would be fantastic!

I can't wait for more info on GT Academy... I really hope that the online function for GT5 is as good as I hope. Most of the stuff I've done online is league based and I hope we see leagues (which I think I've seen here) and can hook up with some of you guys over seas...

As for GTA US... I think they should leave it at Indy, which is where the opening round was for a year ago I think?... Keeping it as a US track seems rather logical?

I'm going out of town the 25th and will not be back until THE END OF FEBRUARY! I can't believe I'm gonna miss this! Not because I think I'm good enough to qualify, but I'm gonna miss the DLC!

What if just what if all the top 36 are Gt Planet members. That would be gran..

I think you can still compete as long as you haven't had a national b license (or equivalent) in real life.

EDIT - From the official rules:

"...must not have previously held a National A or superior MSA license or equivalent in another FIA recognized ASN and not have competed in a national level Karting Championship for more than two full seasons."

Most of the TT top finalist were 👍
Yes that's true but none from the states, how many people we have as members that live in the states? Maybe 2500 or more?, so think of the odds. There is a 40 to 1 or better odds that the top 36 will all be members of GT Planet.

The top 500 times from the time trial is there and there are plenty of GTP members from USA on that board.

Does anyone have any clarification on the level of these licenses compared to SCCA Competition Licenses? I've held an SCCA National license in the past, any thoughts on if this bump me from the competition?

Cheers!

I'm guessing a National A license would equal to the highest national license you can obtain in your region (any higher would be international?).

If you've got the time you can try contact Sony North America and ask them for clarification

I was talking about the US TT.

A few years back I downgraded to a regional license to save some cash since I wasn't racing much, but didn't renew my SCCA membership this year since I only made one race last year. Maybe my delay in renewing my membership can get me a ticket to enter..at least I'm hoping I can sneak by in registration. We'll find out on 12/6 when we register.

This should be fun, I'm really looking forward to the regional competitions leading up the to national competition. If I can walk away with an advancement or two and some sweet GT swag I'll be pleased. If nothing else it will be fun to watch everyone progress through the event.

Why would they make the rules for MSA and ASN instead of NASA or SCCA...?
