Anyone else watch the qualifying race for the Sandown 500?
That was crazy racing, those guys weren't giving an inch out there! The mechanics are going to be working overtime to try and get the cars ready for tomorrow. Without giving too much away, that sure makes the race tomorrow interesting with some fast guys near the back.
 
I will soon once it gets up on the website I use. They never give an inch so I'm not too surprised there:p

Yeah was crazy stuff in both races!! Should make for a great race with the top 3 guys all starting 16th and below haha

I watched up to the first corner of the first race. Winterbottom was effectively screwed by an incident he had nothing to do with.

The entire qualifying race format is a joke. It's probably born out of the need to do something on the Saturday. A better format would be to decide the grid by taking the regular driver's fastest time and adding it to the co-driver's faster time.

Casey Stoner has confirmed that he wants to race in V8 Supercars, but he's not in any hurry to do it:

Why is it a joke? Just curious. The time adding thing is a nice idea though.
 
Lowndes is a great potential to catch up to the top 3. He is now only 147 points behind the leader, starts a head of everyone, and should he finish in front of Davo then he will jump him for 3rd

Because VESA are infatuated with the idea of having unique formats to races to try and give them a little bit of character. This culminated in last year's 500 race, where there was a system in place that nobody understood:

1) All the drivers were put into "Group A" or "Group B". It was up to the teams where they placed each driver, so regular drivers and co-drivers could be mixed up.
2) All the Group A drivers set a qualifying time, followed by the Group B drivers.
3) The Group A drivers had a short race of their own, which was scored.
4) The Group B drivers had a short race of their own, which was also scored.
5) At some point during the two short races, each car had to make one pit stop. The teams could choose to pit whoever they wanted, whenever they wanted to.
6) The points were tallied up, and used to determine the grid.

Nobody could work it out, and it got to the point where the commentators had to reverse-engineer the whole thing and explain it to viewers once the final grid had been published. The whole thing was an absolute joke, and it soured the idea of having unique qualifying and race formats.

I agree that it is a stupid format. Qualifying is about who is fastest and having races to determine qualifying opens up the risk of drivers getting unfairly penalised because of crashes as we saw with all 4 of the title contenders getting caught up in drama. Some of which was their own fault but my point being that the format did not reward car speed.

Being such a long race most of them made it back into the top 3 positions but Will Davison never recovered and his championship has suffered a big blow all thanks to the qualifying format.

Mercedes to join V8's in 2013.

Mercedes V8 Supercar Program Announced Today.
V8 Supercars will today announce that luxury German car maker Mercedes-Benz is set to join Holden, Ford and Nissan on its 2013 grid.

Orchestrated by Australian GT Championship squad Erebus Racing, the deal will see existing Ford outfit Stone Brothers Racing utilise Mercedes engines and bodywork through the company’s AMG Customer Sports department.

Owned by property tycoon Betty Klimenko, Erebus is understood to have been working on the deal with AMG since early this year.

Although Mercedes-Benz Australia previously made public its disapproval of such a program, it is expected that today’s announcement in Melbourne will come with the blessing of the marque’s local arm.

Its V8 Supercars entry is expected to be based on an updated Mercedes E-Class sedan, not scheduled to be unveiled until the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Edit: E-Class though? I would have expected the C-Class.
 
Me, too. That way, they could carry as much over from the DTM as possible.
 
Might be a wheelbase/ bodying issue - C-Class could conceivably be too small even in DTM format, and the E may be more in keeping with the larger 4 door saloons.
 
Well, given that there won't be any factory support from Mercedes, I figured that building something that they could readily carry over from the DTM would be of benefit.
 
There probably wouldn't really be much that could carry over from a DTM car, which would be more closely related to an Le Mans Prototype than a V8 Supercar, anyway.
 
Not so much wheelbase but track, I would have thought.
Both are relevant to the selection of the E series over the C though.
 
Watched the announcement video, and they also mentioned that the Austin Texas race date will be announced next week. 👍

It's basically this year's livery, but with less sponsors on it.

No, wait, it's all black. And those orange and silver stripes remind me of the Bundaberg Commodores (not surprising, given that the car is built by Walkinshaw Performance, and WP used to run the Bundaberg cars):

The lighting in the "Sunrise" (ugh) studio makes the front end appear to be a deep, burgundy-like red.

That is one very nice livery!

With these added manufacturers, does anyone think it would give us a better chance now to have a proper V8Supercars game? Even adding them to Gran Turismo!
