Just finished my run of getting a victory with each nation. I saved the USA for last and it only took 1 match. A Beaufighter in that match took out 5 of the enemies on his own, while my P-400 was focused on trying to cook itself over Saipan so I wasn't much use to the team unfortunately.

So it turns out my P-36 has all tier 3 upgrades but not all tier 1 or 2. Just realised it worked out in tiers, I just bought what looked fun

Yeah, it works in tiers, but some planes benefit from going after specific upgrades when they're available instead of sticking to the tiers.

Yeah, I upgraded the guns first, now working on defences then manoeuvrability.

It all depends on what you're flying. Bombers benefit from unlocking other bombs as most of them don't come with their optimum bombload by default. Some planes with cannons equipped have mediocre cannon rounds. Some planes don't have the best protection by default. Some of the early planes have lousy engine power and benefit from those upgrades.

Then there's the Swordfish.

There's a ton of videos on youtube for most of the planes in the game, if you're ever struggling with one, it's usually worth checking youtube for a video covering that plane.

Well, I'm sticking with my Rasmussen P-36 I got from the PS Plus Starter Pack and it works brilliantly for me, infact I have a story about it.

I was playing on a map with snowy mountains, I took out a MK I Nimrod but had a A6M4 on my tail. They hit my engine and had a lot of smoke coming out of it so I retreated to the airfield. Approaching the airfield I dropped power to 0% and deployed landing gear, however forgot to deploy landing flaps. I landed, destroyed the landing gear and somehow didn't explode. I scraped the runway all the way to the end, on fire the whole time, and came to a complete stop and got a "Safe Landing".

Nimrod doesn't have retractable landing gear or flaps. Something doesn't seem quite right about being spawned back in the air without being repaired either...

Oh no I was repaired, I was respawned BECAUSE I had a destroyed engine.

Right.. arcade mode... you don't get the choice to take off in that mode.
You can take off in arcade mode, I do when I can, but doesn't work on some maps that don't have airfields

I love using flaps when so many forget. I always get rage against when I suddenly start turning better when I am below the breaking point.

Just got booted off War Thunder because the PS4 has to do a system update. Got my silver lions back up to around 500K, and finished research on an A6M and a P39... I think.. whichever is clustered in with the P-400 and comes after it. Finished upgrades on the Ki-45 Otsu and the Beaufighter Mk VIc. Only got shot down about 4-5 times in the 4 hours I played, so I'd say that was a pretty successful run. Shot down maybe 6 planes, 4-5 assists and 5 ground targets in that time as well. Might be a bit below what I actually got except for ground targets. Had a couple matches where I had 2 kills.

Felt good to shoot down Yak-9 variants though. Especially when flying the P-400. My aim is finally getting better, although there are probably times where I'm too cautious at shooting an enemy because I'm not sure I'm lined up properly and I'd rather not waste ammo.. especially on the heavy fighters with lower cannon loads.

Did you spent a lot early on? I've never dropped before 150K and I buy a new plane as soon as research is done (But I'm only researching US fighters ATM) and currently have around 250K or so.

I spent a lot recently. I was up near 1 million and dropped below 300k due to buying vehicles, upgrades, shifting lineups around, repairs, etc. I'm getting into the area of the game where vehicles are going up in price quickly. I have planes I haven't purchased because they're above 50k SL and I didn't feel like putting that much down on anything even though I have the funds to do so.

I stupidly bought a 4th slot for Russia accidently when I started the game. I only use USA, and am currently using the Rasmussen P-38, P-36 and ABY-5 Catalina. I am currently researching just fighters and bombers for USA

I maxed out the slots for each country that could be purchased with SLs, and an accidental GE slot purchase for Germany.

My current plane lineups are:
US: P-400
Germany: FW 190 A-1, 3 BF 109s and a Ju 87.
Russia: 3 tier 1 bombers. I forget which ones.
UK: lowest 2 Spits and Hurricanes
Japan: Ki-43, Ki-61, B5N2

Keep in mind I play realistic so my lineups won't change much for a while as I work through what I have now.

Only thing I bought outside of US is A6M4 for Japan

Quick question: What is the importance of the "gun targeting distance" option? I've been fiddling with it, and I'm curious about its effects. Does it mean I can target enemies from a further distance than normal?

I'm curious also, someone said it should be about 400-600 so mine stays at 500

It doesn't matter in arcade as it auto adjusts to the target.

As for other modes. It is gun convergence. The guns are not straight, they are set so the bullets cross paths at a point. The distance setting is the point at which they cross.

latest

Ok, so it's an option to try to adjust the effectiveness of your weapons, am I correct? Another thing that makes more sense out of arcade mode, I guess...

It's only purpose is to line up guns that are either A) mounted in the wings of a plane or B) guns of different caliber on a plane.

Having the distance set to "No" means the guns fire straight out and drop off at whatever rate they naturally do. Setting them at a specific distance means they converge at that distance.

Planes with guns in the nose aren't effected by this unless those guns are of different caliber... like the F2A Buffalo or P36 Hawk, for example. Guns also aren't effective beyond 800M unless you're really good at sniping. I personally keep mine set to 600M as it fits my play style better.

With my setting of 600M, that means if I fire at anything once I get within 600M (.6km), if I have the guns lined up on the target properly, I will hit the target with no trouble.

Kind of. It is an accuracy setting. If your guns aren't converged at the right distance then it is harder to hit the target.

Once you start playing outside of arcade mode, you should pick a setting and stay with it. It'll be better than trying to switch it around every battle as you won't get use to how the shots travel to the target.
