Wasn't damage gonna look alot more significant prior to release?

I remember seeing a screen shot of a car where the damage looked alot more drastic than it does now.
 
Yup. The shop demos had a lot of damage and sparks. But they removed it for the final game.

Skip to 1:21 for some pretty impressive sparks. I actually wish the full game looked like this.

 
To be honest with you, I care more for further implementation of mechanical damage.

The option to turn on damage for A-Spec off line would really add so much more immersion to the off line events. Yeah, some people would complain but that's why it should be optional.

The visual damage is only for the benefit of replays in my view. I can't see it from the cockpit.
 
I always thought the the sparks and damage was a little overdone in those shop demos however I'd have liked the option to enable it at least offline.

If the decision to remove it was voluntary rather than a legal problem with manufacturers being unwilling to see their cars being used as battering rams, then I think that was a mistake on PD's part; especially after releasing shop demos that showed the model in the first place, and left most people assuming logically that it would be in the final game.

I'm not a great fan of damage as such because it encourages idiots to smash into people online, but it has to be said nonetheless that the damage in GT5 is pretty pathetic in the vast majority of cases.

I wish more people were concerned about how the game acts, instead of how it looks.
 
I don't care for cosmetic damage at all. I would argue that you shouldn't be crashing into things anyway.

Exactly. Crashing/damage is what you want to avoid. Mechanical damage makes sense online as it punishes reckless drivers. I for one wouldn't care if we went back to GT4 with no damage. I never look outside the car unless I'm watching a replay.
 
The damage is way too inconsistent in the game. After the 2.0 update some cars damage a lot easier but there's some cars that take a lot of crashing to see any real damage.

And then some cars look very realistic when damaged where others look like they are made of rubber and have been stretched.
 
Well, now I know why KY said before the game was released that people probably would turn of the damage when they are playing.

Not because it's too hard for the drivers, as i thought, but because it's just pathetic how this visual damage model works and looks.

We have a photoreport of each race we keep at our site so the visual aspect is pretty important there.

The races are pretty close and a bump here and there can sometimes not be avoided. It's fun to see afterwards how some drivers had a fight with eachother and the damage that goes with that.
 
The problem is though, that mechanical damage is not believable without visual, it's like a penalty rather then damage. The two need to work together. Also it would be nice if they didn't act like bumper karts. Not because I like ramming and stuff, but because it lacks the entire consequence side of immersion and it just doesn't seem believable when two f1 slam together and nothing happens.
 
I saw this one video on YouTube about that. It was before the game was released and had a Subaru Impreza WRC car in it. The damage shown in the video was different after the game was released. The car didn't damage like the one in the video did. Some people may not want the damage in the game but it does make it more realistic despite some of the cars looking like they have been made out of rubber. I think its a cool feature in the game but it needs more work to it. I haven't gotten internet to my PS3 so I can't update anything on it.

performance wise of visual damage , it actually does affect the physics of the car greatly

I can confirm this 100% , the visual does have an effect in the car's physics.

I have an SLR McLaren with a bigger rear difuser upgrade

if you wreck its rear which it will look like the rear is falling off or even before its on its worst form , driving in the nurburgring and riding on kerbs will make the car hit the kerbs and compromising rear grip , thats really realistic

Yeah it was supposed to be better but since release the damage has been gotten better (worse). I have pictures of my Aston Martin where the trunk is smashed down to about where the bumper is and the front is shorter by a good foot (tank car inspirational online driver). Don't know to post pictures from PS3 to here though.

Duh! It's a consequence of a mistake made visually noticeable, it's obvious that you want to avoid it, although sometimes crashing deliberately in a videogame just for watching a car deform has a certain appeal I can't deny.

Mechanical damage indeed makes sense online but making that mechanical damage visual so you know your opponents suffer from mechanical damage or seeing they had a crash also makes a lot of sense, it's not just 'disturbing eyecandy' but when implemented correctly it can provide crucial information.

But mostly, when I do crash, I don't want my car to look pristine afterwards even when the current visual damage isn't very convincing.
And it can affect gameplay when driving in cockpit view, had a massive crash once on La Sarthe with a Corvette ZR1 which bonnet deformed to an extend that it blocked a large part of the windscreen.
