EDIT: I read somewhere that Mazda have officially given up on rotary engines, so I guess a new RX-7 or indeed RX-9 is unlikely![]()
Although the RX-8 sports car and Renesis 1.3-liter rotary have been discontinued, work on the next-generation rotary engine continues. No time frame has been set for the return of a rotary-powered sports car, as the automaker is prioritizing the rollout of Skyactiv technologies.
A cheap, lightweight and accessible RX-7 like the first generation model would also be nice to do battle with the BreezeFreeze.
I think Eunos hit the nail on the head there. The MX-5 is Mazda's cheap FR sports car, I doubt Mazda is keen to introduce a new RX-7 so close to the MX-5. I reckon a new RX-7 would be further upmarket: RX-8/370Z territory or higher. Which is a shame, I'd be very interested in the car you both describe.First Gen Mazda RX-7: Although it would overlap a lot with the MX-5, a small, light chassis with serious helpings of rotary power.
