What Discontinued Car Would You Like To See A Modern Version Of ?
 
Nice thread! For me, offhand I can think of the following:

De Tomaso Pantera

Panther Six

Iso Grifo (there were a couple of 90s concepts which didn't come to much)

Ford Capri

Triumph TR9 (following the series, BMW own the name Triumph but as yet haven't done anything with it)

I would like to see a sports car with the name Cord, Auburn or Duesenberg, not sure who owns the rights to the names but Cord briefly resumed production in the 60s or 70s IIRC.

Any Ford with the Cosworth badge on it, don't get me wrong the RS Focus is pretty sweet but the Escort and the Sierra Cosworth are legendary.

A Focus Cosworth and a Mondeo one would be pretty special :)

Toyota Supra: Perhaps Toyota could take the platform of the Lexus GS and shorten it some, and build a new Supra on it. But please, no silly Hybrid Supra, that's just not desirable.
Buick Roadmaster: GM could just build this off the existing Holden platform if they so choose, but it would need to be bigger, and much more luxurious than its spartan platform mates. Buick needs a rear wheel drive flagship.
Honda Integra: The ingrediants are still there; Honda just needs to take the current Civic and take away two doors, and they'd have a good base for an Integra.
Duesenberg: Would cost a lot of money to develop, but America needs a real standard of the world luxury car, and Cadillac seems to be taking quite a while to come up with a flagship. Lincoln isn't even going to come up with a flagship. I do worry though, that if someone revives Duesenberg, we'll just end up with an American Maybach; a supersized version of an existing large car, and not enough to differentiate it from that car in which it was based upon.
Oldsmobile: Though I'm not crazy about the name, I was always fond of Oldsmobiles. I quite liked the later models, they looked nice and futuristic, though, I don't think GM could justify this one. :indiff:
Honda Prelude: Just take the new Accord, shorten it some, and spice up the styling a bit, and you have a modern Prelude.
 
Might just be me but I find it a little odd when people choose certain numbered models, like 205, Z8 etc. For example, let's hope Peugeot will make a hatch as cool as the 205 again (well the GTi anyway) but it's not gonna be called the 205, so will effectively be a different car. Would be different if several cars had worn that name, like the RX-7. To me that choice makes more sense, but not my place to say what's right or wrong I guess ;)

EDIT: I read somewhere that Mazda have officially given up on rotary engines, so I guess a new RX-7 or indeed RX-9 is unlikely :(

This Motortrend Article suggests otherwise...

Although the RX-8 sports car and Renesis 1.3-liter rotary have been discontinued, work on the next-generation rotary engine continues. No time frame has been set for the return of a rotary-powered sports car, as the automaker is prioritizing the rollout of Skyactiv technologies.
 
Ah fair enough, I think I read it on MSN Cars or something, perhaps not the most reliable source :)

RX-7-Needs to be a turbo.
Silvia-Problem is, they already have the Z car, and making something to compete with the GT-86 wouldn't really fit into the Silvias DNA.
 
I'd like a modern, lightweight mid-engined performance car for the people. I don't care if it was in the more relaxed and stylish vein of the Fiero or the frenetic guise of the MR2.



A cheap, lightweight and accessible RX-7 like the first generation model would also be nice to do battle with the BreezeFreeze.

First Gen Mazda RX-7: Although it would overlap a lot with the MX-5, a small, light chassis with serious helpings of rotary power.
Mazda Cosmo: Bring the name back as a GT-R/LF-A fighter. A proper supercar, in traditional Mazda fashion; super light with an emphasis on balance and feel. Wouldn't necessarily need a rotary, but a proper performance engine is a must. Can't see how any engine could beat a 4 rotor in this type of car (disregarding emissions, fuel consumption, oil consumption etc :) )
Lincoln Continental: Bring back a proper Lincoln, not the alpha-numeric name bs. The Continental is quite possibly the best name for a Luxury car, why did they abandon it??
Honda/Acura Integra: Base it on the fit I suppose, just needs to be small, light, tossable, restrained looking, and rev-happy
 
Nissan Silvia: Because I would be very interested in possibly buying one.
Toyota MR2: MR alternative to the GT 86? I'd be keen.

I think Eunos hit the nail on the head there. The MX-5 is Mazda's cheap FR sports car, I doubt Mazda is keen to introduce a new RX-7 so close to the MX-5. I reckon a new RX-7 would be further upmarket: RX-8/370Z territory or higher. Which is a shame, I'd be very interested in the car you both describe.
